Download or read book Time Holds the Mirror written by Cecelia Eaton Luschnig and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work is limited to the question of knowledge in Euripides' Hippolytus and seeks to show that one of the major themes of the Hippolytus, as of the Oedipus, is knowledge. In successive chapters these subjects are treated: (1) the witness theme, seeing and knowing, what the senses reveal; (2) fantasies of other worlds created by the characters and how these fantasies reavel the character's perceptions of the world; (3) how Euripides causes his characters to become aware of the shifting meanings of words and how it happens that one statement and its opposite can be predicated of the same individual or act; (4) the desire for and fear of knowledge and the choice of ignorance; (5) the use of generalization as a kind of ignorance; (6) the relation of the character's knowledge to that of the audience. The work offers a new perception of the drama through a detailed examination of this important question that was so warmly debated among the early Sophists.

Download or read book Pynchon and History written by Shawn Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2005. While many previous books on Pynchon allude to his fictional engagement with historical events and figures, this book explores Pynchon as a historical novelist and, by extension, historical thinker. The book interprets Pynchon's four major novels V., Gravity's Rainbow, Vineland, and Mason & Dixon through the prism of historical interpretation and representation. In doing so, it argues that Pynchon's innovative narrative techniques express his philosophy of history and historical representation through the form of his texts.

Download or read book The Common Place written by Peter King and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what constitutes our experience of our immediate environment is quite ordinary and familiar, in particular, where we live. While policymakers and academics are constantly seeking transformations in housing, what we seek from our own housing is stability and lack of change. We seek secure roots to our lives rather than step-changes and radical reform. This book considers this ordinary experience of housing and how we come to depend upon it. The notion of the ordinary is used to argue against the conceits of policymaking and the fetish for domestic design. Using a variety of methods such as critical analysis and film criticism (looking at the work of film-makers as diverse as Bergman, Dreyer, Shyamalan, Tarkovsky, Tati and the Wachowski Brothers), it provides an original, impressionistic view of the role housing plays in our lives.
