Some important events with which I have been associated, and many changes in the Conference with which I am connected, have occurred since then; but as I only undertook to give the recollections of fifty years, these, of course, are omitted. I trust that my narrative, with its numerous facts and incidents, will not prove entirely uninteresting and nu profitable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Forty Years: Delivered, 19 March, 1837, the Lord's Day After the Completion of Forty Years From His Settlement in the Ministry, in Brookline As, during the past week, the exact period, to which Moses so expressively refers, has elapsed from the commencement of the pastoral connexion between the minister* and people in this place, the thought has sug gested itself to my mind, that an appropriate use might be made of the monition, with which I introduced my discourse. Thou shalt remember all the way, which the Lord thy God led thee, these forty years. I. Let me then begin the memorial of events, in which we are mutually interested, by a brief review of our privileges and blessings, as a religious society. By adverting to the Discourse, delivered, on 24 November, 1805, the day, which completed a century from the incorporation of the Town, you will find, that the early settlers of this place found many difficulties? In procuring and enjoying religious, as well as munici pal privileges. For about three quarters of a century, it formed a part ofthe neighboring Capital, to which the inhabitants here addressed repeated and earnest peti tions, before they could obtain their consent to become incorporated. Similar difficulties prevented their for mation of a religious society; so that the first meeting house was not raised, till 10 November, Its Dedication sermon was preached, on 3 June, 1715, by the Rev. Nehemiah Walter, pastor of the First Church, in Roxbury, for several years colleague with the divine, familiarly denominated the apostle Eliot. To say nothing of those that recur annually, as the Fourth of July and Washington's Birthday, has a man been married, or a minister settled, five, or ten, or twenty-five, or fifty years has a battle been fought at one of these intervals; 'has a town been settled or an institution founded fifty, or a hundred, or two hundred and fifty years, there must be a celebration, a gathering, congratulations, sometimes gifts, some times a dinner, always a speech. From this tendency the calls upon me have been exceptionally numerous. When this College had been founded fifty years, having been for seven years its president. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shades and the Lights of a Fifty Years' Ministry, 1844-1894: Jubilate; A Sermon by Alex. Crummell, Rector, and a Presentation Address by Mrs. A. J. Cooper; St. Luke's Church, Washington D. C., December 9th, 1894 On a visit to the United States. In 1361 I called on the Bishop. At his resi dence in Baltimore. At. The close of a long conversation. He paused. Ofa sudden, his face coloured up. And he remarked to rue - Mr. Crummell. I feel ashamed and mortified that I haven't a pulpit to offer you on the mor row! But you know the state of things in this city. This was amid the burly-burly of the incipient Civil War: and only the night before my life was in peril, from the ruffians of the city.up a petition to the Trustees of the Seminary My petition was presented by the Rev Dr. Milnor, then Rector of St. George's Chapel, New York. It is impossible to tell the exasperation caused in this august body. After a fierce and angry debate, in which that lion-hearted prelate, the Right Rey George W Doane, of New Jersey, stood alone in my behalf, the petition was rejected. Immediately, that is during the session of the Trustees, Bishop Onder clonk sent for me: and then and there, in his study, set upon me with a violence and grossness that I have never since encountered, save in one instance, in Africa. What, you ask me. Was the kernel of this difficulty? It was chiefly this: South Carolina had endowed a Pro fessor's chair in the Seminary to the amount of several thousands of dollars; and the Bishop was determined that South Carolina should not be offended by the presence of a Negro in that Seminary The upshot of the case was that, by a pitiful device, my name was stricken from his list of candidates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years: Or Dead Leaves and Living Seeds Though I am asked to pen a preface to this little volume, I do so with a feeling that nothing seems likely to come of it beyond a remark that, having committed myself to an utterance which is unavoidably personal, I might have drawn upon early and college memories. But since I purposed to say a word about such as were mainly of a clerical nature, these would have been out of place, and tempted me to write at greater length. And thus, as the air of publication has grown thick with reminiscences of many sorts, I can submit these to the severity of critics with the reflection that, at any rate, they are not initially deterrent by reason of their bulkiness, whatever fault may be found with what I have ventured to set down in the following pages, now laid before my friends and such Of the reading public as may care to glance at some written experiences and thoughts of a private in the ranks of town and country parsons. I might add that, being a minister of the English Church, which holds together good men of many minds, I have been moved with a desire to recognise its toler ance, and with a feeling that eyes to see fairly those facts which concern all are more needed than views, however honestly taken, of the different sides which they present.
