Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Nonlinear Integral Equations presents several extremely fruitful methods for the analysis of systems and nonlinear integral equations. They include: fixed point methods (the Schauder and Leray-Schauder principles), variational methods (direct variational methods and mountain pass theorems), and iterative methods (the discrete continuation principle, upper and lower solutions techniques, Newton's method and the generalized quasilinearization method). Many important applications for several classes of integral equations and, in particular, for initial and boundary value problems, are presented to complement the theory. Special attention is paid to the existence and localization of solutions in bounded domains such as balls and order intervals. The presentation is essentially self-contained and leads the reader from classical concepts to current ideas and methods of nonlinear analysis.

Book excerpt: In recent years considerable interest has been focused on nonlinear diffu sion problems, the archetypical equation for these being Ut = D.u + f(u). Here D. denotes the n-dimensional Laplacian, the solution u = u(x, t) is defined over some space-time domain of the form n x [O,T], and f(u) is a given real function whose form is determined by various physical and mathematical applications. These applications have become more varied and widespread as problem after problem has been shown to lead to an equation of this type or to its time-independent counterpart, the elliptic equation of equilibrium D.u + f(u) = o. Particular cases arise, for example, in population genetics, the physics of nu clear stability, phase transitions between liquids and gases, flows in porous media, the Lend-Emden equation of astrophysics, various simplified com bustion models, and in determining metrics which realize given scalar or Gaussian curvatures. In the latter direction, for example, the problem of finding conformal metrics with prescribed curvature leads to a ground state problem involving critical exponents. Thus not only analysts, but geome ters as well, can find common ground in the present work. The corresponding mathematical problem is to determine how the struc ture of the nonlinear function f(u) influences the behavior of the solution.

Book excerpt: Contributions to Nonlinear Functional Analysis contains the proceedings of a Symposium on Nonlinear Functional Analysis, held in Madison, Wisconsin, on April 12-14, 1971, under the sponsorship of the University of Wisconsin's Mathematics Research Center. The symposium provided a forum for discussing various topics related to nonlinear functional analysis, from transversality in nonlinear eigenvalue problems to monotonicity methods in Hilbert spaces and some applications to nonlinear partial differential equations. Comprised of 15 chapters, this book begins by presenting an extension of Leray-Schauder degree and an application to a nonlinear elliptic boundary value problem. The discussion then turns to the use of degree theory to prove the existence of global continua of solutions of nonlinear eigenvalue problems; transversality in nonlinear eigenvalue problems; and how variational structure can be used to study some local questions in bifurcation theory. Subsequent chapters deal with the notion of monotone operators and monotonicity theory; a nonlinear version of the Hille-Yosida theorem; a version of the penalty method for the Navier-Stokes equations; and various types of weak solutions for minimizing problems in the spirit of duality theory for convex functionals. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the field of mathematics who want to learn more about nonlinear functional analysis.

More precisely, it investigates the existence, multiplicity and qualitative properties of solutions for fractional Schrödinger equations by applying suitable variational and topological methods. The book is mainly intended for researchers in pure and applied mathematics, physics, mechanics, and engineering. However, the material will also be useful for students in higher semesters and young researchers, as well as experienced specialists working in the field of nonlocal PDEs. This is the first book to approach fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equations by applying variational and topological methods.

Book excerpt: As long as a branch of knowledge offers an abundance of problems, it is full of vitality. David Hilbert Over the last 15 years I have given lectures on a variety of problems in nonlinear functional analysis and its applications. In doing this, I have recommended to my students a number of excellent monographs devoted to specialized topics, but there was no complete survey-type exposition of nonlinear functional analysis making available a quick survey to the wide range of readers including mathematicians, natural scientists, and engineers who have only an elementary knowledge of linear functional analysis. I have tried to close this gap with my five-part lecture notes, the first three parts of which have been published in the Teubner-Texte series by Teubner-Verlag, Leipzig, 1976, 1977, and 1978. The present English edition was translated from a completely rewritten manuscript which is significantly longer than the original version in the Teubner-Texte series. The material is organized in the following way: Part I: Fixed Point Theorems. Part II: Monotone Operators. Part III: Variational Methods and Optimization. Parts IV jV: Applications to Mathematical Physics. The exposition is guided by the following considerations: (a) What are the supporting basic ideas and what intrinsic interrelations exist between them? (/3) In what relation do the basic ideas stand to the known propositions of classical analysis and linear functional analysis? ( y) What typical applications are there? Vll Preface viii Special emphasis is placed on motivation.

Book excerpt: The book provides an introduction to minimax methods in critical point theory and shows their use in existence questions for nonlinear differential equations. An expanded version of the author's 1984 CBMS lectures, this volume is the first monograph devoted solely to these topics. Among the abstract questions considered are the following: the mountain pass and saddle point theorems, multiple critical points for functionals invariant under a group of symmetries, perturbations from symmetry, and variational methods in bifurcation theory. The book requires some background in functional analysis and differential equations, especially elliptic partial differential equations. It is addressed to mathematicians interested in differential equations and/or nonlinear functional analysis, particularly critical point theory.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on nonlinear boundary value problems and the aspects of nonlinear analysis which are necessary to their study. The authors first give a comprehensive introduction to the many different classical methods from nonlinear analysis, variational principles, and Morse theory. They then provide a rigorous and detailed treatment of the relevant areas of nonlinear analysis with new applications to nonlinear boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations. Recent results on the existence and multiplicity of critical points for both smooth and nonsmooth functional, developments on the degree theory of monotone type operators, nonlinear maximum and comparison principles for p-Laplacian type operators, and new developments on nonlinear Neumann problems involving non-homogeneous differential operators appear for the first time in book form. The presentation is systematic, and an extensive bibliography and a remarks section at the end of each chapter highlight the text. This work will serve as an invaluable reference for researchers working in nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations as well as a useful tool for all those interested in the topics presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eigenvalue problems for quasilinear and nonlinear operators present many differences with the linear case, and a Lyapunov inequality for quasilinear resonant systems showed the existence of eigenvalue asymptotics driven by the coupling of the equations instead of the order of the equations. For p=2, the coupling and the order of the equations are the same, so this cannot happen in linear problems. Another striking difference between linear and quasilinear second order differential operators is the existence of Lyapunov-type inequalities in R^n when p>n. Since the linear case corresponds to p=2, for the usual Laplacian there exists a Lyapunov inequality only for one-dimensional problems. For linear higher order problems, several Lyapunov-type inequalities were found by Egorov and Kondratiev and collected in On spectral theory of elliptic operators, Birkhauser Basel 1996. However, there exists an interesting interplay between the dimension of the underlying space, the order of the differential operator, the Sobolev space where the operator is defined, and the norm of the weight appearing in the inequality which is not fully developed. Also, the Lyapunov inequality for differential equations in Orlicz spaces can be used to develop an oscillation theory, bypassing the classical sturmian theory which is not known yet for those equations. For more general operators, like the p(x) laplacian, the possibility of existence of Lyapunov-type inequalities remains unexplored.

Book excerpt: In the rapidly developing area of nonlinear theory of differential equations, many important results have been obtained by the use of nonlinear functional analysis based on topological and variational methods. The survey papers presented in this volume represent the current state of the art in the subject. The methods outlined in this book can be used to obtain new results concerning the existence, uniqueness, multiplicity, and bifurcation of the solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems for ordinary and partial differential equations. The contributions to this volume are from well known mathematicians, and every paper contained in this book can serve both as a source of reference for researchers working in differential equations and as a starting point for those wishing to pursue research in this direction. With research reports in the field typically scattered in many papers within various journals, this book provides the reader with recent results in an accessible form.
