The daily use of portable sophisticated electronic calculators (some of them rivaling general-purpose minicomputers in their capa bi li ti es) has hastened this development. Over the past several years, computer assisted experimentation has assumed an important role in the experimental laboratory. Mini- and microcomputer systems have become an important part of the physical scientist's array of analytical instruments. Prompted by our beliefthat this was an inevitable development, we began several years aga to develop the curricular materials presented in this manual. At the outset, several objectives seemed important to uso First, insofar as possible, the experiments included should be thoroughly tested and error free. Second, they should be compatible with a variety of laboratory computer, data-acquisition, and control systems. Third, little or no previous background in either electronics or programming should be necessary. (Of course, such background would be advantageous. ) To satisfy these objectives, we decided to adopt a widespread high-level computer language, BASIC, suitably modified for the purpose. Furthermore, we have purposely avoided specifying any particular system or equipment. Rather, the functional characteristics of both hardware and software required are stipulated. The experiments have been developed using Varian 620 and Hewlett-Packard 2100 series computers, but we believe they are readily transferable to other commonly available computer systems with a minimum of difficulty.

The project used the Montana State University (MSU) laboratory interface system. The system is an integrated hardware and software package which allows for a wide variety of measurements (pH, temperature, time, voltage, current, etc.) totally under the control of the user. The MSU lab interface system was designed to allow students to participate in the process of science. The hardware and software contain components which allow students to design experiments, acquire data in methods which they choose, and organize and analyze the data to draw conclusions. To meet the objective, we developed and accomplished the following: (1) we developed a model which explains how computers in the laboratory can improve a student's overall understanding of chemistry and laboratories; (2) we developed a laboratory program which successfully taught students how to use the MSU laboratory interface system to design their own experiments; and (3) we developed, tested, and evaluated experiments designed to utilize the capabilities of the MSU lab interface system.

The system is based on a Digital Equipment Corporation LSI-11 microcomputer and acquires multiple channels of data from nuclear simulation experiments on aircraft components. Comprising the lowest level of a rudimentary hierarchial network, the system transmits the data to a larger minicomputer system for storage, from where it is subsequently retransmitted to a mainframe system for reduction and plotting. Software for the data acquisition system is modularly structured and written primarily in FORTRAN to facilitate modifications by the user. Basic hardware for the system is discussed, and the program algorithms and structure are examined. (Author).

This system utilizes an HP-85 desktop computer as system controller for the HP-3054A data acquisition system. Large quantities of high quality data can be acquired at high data rates and stored for future use or processed real time in closed loop feedback control circuis for precise process control and display. Other electromechanical equipment such as Visicorders provide analog real time data and run in parallel with digital equipment but can be remotely controlled for precise timing of experiments. Interactive programs on the HP-85 computer allow the experimenter to do preliminary calculations, initial experiment set-up, and to perform accurate process control of system functions. On line data reduction and display of results is performed by the system CRT display, the 7225B Plotter, or the system printer. Four basic experiments/experimental apparatuses are currently automated using the automatic data acquisition system; a light scattering experiment, a vitiated air heater, a solid fuel ramjet, and a turbojet combustor test rig. The first three applications are discussed in subsequent sections along with the measurement techniques used to implement the process.

Book excerpt: The large volume of ultrasonic data generated by computer-aided test procedures has necessitated the development of a mobile, high-speed data acquisition and storage system. This approach offers the decided advantage of on-site data collection and remote data processing. It also utilizes standard, commercially available ultrasonic instrumentation. This system is controlled by an Intel 8080A microprocessor. The MCS80-SDK microcomputer board was chosen, and magnetic tape is used as the storage medium. A detailed description is provided of both the hardware and software developed to interface the magnetic tape storage subsystem to Biomation 8100 and Biomation 805 waveform recorders. A boxcar integrator acquisition system is also described for use when signal averaging becomes necessary. Both assembly language and machine language listings are provided for the software.
