Book Synopsis Practical Formal Methods for Hardware Design by : Carlos Delgado Kloos
Download or read book Practical Formal Methods for Hardware Design written by Carlos Delgado Kloos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formal methods for hardware design still find limited use in industry. Yet current practice has to change to cope with decreasing design times and increasing quality requirements. This research report presents results from the Esprit project FORMAT (formal methods in hardware verification) which involved the collaboration of the enterprises Siemens, Italtel, Telefonica I+D, TGI, and AHL, the research institute OFFIS, and the universities of Madrid and Passau. The work presented involves advanced specification languages for hardware design that are intuitive to the designer, like timing diagrams and state based languages, as well as their relation to VHDL and formal languages like temporal logic and a process-algebraic calculus. The results of experimental tests of the tools are also presented.

This book was released on 2004-06-30 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps nothing characterizes the inherent heterogeneity in embedded sys tems than the ability to choose between hardware and software implementations of a given system function. Indeed, most embedded systems at their core repre sent a careful division and design of hardware and software parts of the system To do this task effectively, models and methods are necessary functionality. to capture application behavior, needs and system implementation constraints. Formal modeling can be valuable in addressing these tasks. As with most engineering domains, co-design practice defines the state of the it seeks to add new capabilities in system conceptualization, mod art, though eling, optimization and implementation. These advances -particularly those related to synthesis and verification tasks -direct1y depend upon formal under standing of system behavior and performance measures. Current practice in system modeling relies upon exploiting high-level programming frameworks, such as SystemC, EstereI, to capture design at increasingly higher levels of ab straction and attempts to reduce the system implementation task. While raising the abstraction levels for design and verification tasks, to be really useful, these approaches must also provide for reuse, adaptation of the existing intellectual property (IP) blocks.

Book Synopsis Verification of Digital and Hybrid Systems by : M. Kemal Inan
Download or read book Verification of Digital and Hybrid Systems written by M. Kemal Inan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of a NATO Advanced Study Institute summer school that was held in Antalya, TUrkey from 26 May to 6 June 1997. The purpose of the summer school was to expose recent advances in the formal verification of systems composed of both logical and continuous time components. The course was structured in two parts. The first part covered theorem-proving, system automaton models, logics, tools, and complexity of verification. The second part covered modeling and verification of hybrid systems, i. e. , systems composed of a discrete event part and a continuous time part that interact with each other in novel ways. Along with advances in microelectronics, methods to design and build logical systems have grown progressively complex. One way to tackle the problem of ensuring the error-free operation of digital or hybrid systems is through the use of formal techniques. The exercise of comparing the formal specification of a logical system namely, what it is supposed to do to its formal operational description-what it actually does!-in an automated or semi-automated manner is called verification. Verification can be performed in an after-the-fact manner, meaning that after a system is already designed, its specification and operational description are regenerated or modified, if necessary, to match the verification tool at hand and the consistency check is carried out.
Book Synopsis Computer-Aided Verification by : Robert Kurshan
Download or read book Computer-Aided Verification written by Robert Kurshan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer-Aided Verification is a collection of papers that begins with a general survey of hardware verification methods. Ms. Gupta starts with the issue of verification itself and develops a taxonomy of verification methodologies, focusing especially upon recent advances. Although her emphasis is hardware verification, most of what she reports applies to software verification as well. Graphical presentation is coming to be a de facto requirement for a `friendly' user interface. The second paper presents a generic format for graphical presentations of coordinating systems represented by automata. The last two papers as a pair, present a variety of generic techniques for reducing the computational cost of computer-aided verification based upon explicit computational memory: the first of the two gives a time-space trade-off, while the second gives a technique which trades space for a (sometimes predictable) probability of error. Computer-Aided Verification is an edited volume of original research. This research work has also been published as a special issue of the journal Formal Methods in System Design, 1:2-3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Largeandcomplexsoftwaresystemsprovidethenecessaryinfrastuctureinall- dustries today. In order to construct such large systems in a systematic manner, the focus in the development methodologies has switched in the last two decades from functional issues to structural issues: both data and functions are enc- sulated into software units that are integrated into large systems by means of various techniques supporting reusability and modi?ability. This encapsulation principleisessentialtoboththeobject-orientedandthemorerecentcompone- based sofware engineering paradigms. Formalmethodshavebeenappliedsuccessfullytotheveri?cationofmedi- sized programs in protocol and hardware design. However, their application to large systems requires the further development of speci?cation and veri?cation techniques supporting the concepts of reusability and modi?ability. In order to bring together researchers and practioners in the areas of so- ware engineering and formal methods, we organized the 1st International S- posium on Formal Methods for Components and Objects (FMCO) in Leiden, The Netherlands, November 5–8, 2002. The program consisted of invited tu- rials and more technical presentations given by leading experts in the ?elds of Theoretical Computer Science and Software Engineering. The symposium was attended by more than 100 people. This volume contains the contributions of the invited speakers to FMCO 2002. We believe that the presented material provides a unique combination of ideas on software engineering and formal methods which we hope will be an inspiration for those aiming at further bridging the gap between the theory and practice of software engineering.

Download or read book Higher Order Logic Theorem Proving and its Applications written by L.J.M. Claesen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The HOL system is a higher order logic theorem proving system implemented at Edinburgh University, Cambridge University and INRIA. Its many applications, from the verification of hardware designs at all levels to the verification of programs and communication protocols are considered in depth in this volume. Other systems based on higher order logic, namely Nuprl and LAMBDA are also discussed. Features given particular consideration are: novel developments in higher order logic and its implementations in HOL; formal design and verification methodologies for hardware and software; public domain availability of the HOL system. Papers addressing these issues have been divided as follows: Mathematical Logic; Induction; General Modelling and Proofs; Formalizing and Modelling of Automata; Program Verification; Hardware Description Language Semantics; Hardware Verification Methodologies; Simulation in Higher Order Logic; Extended Uses of Higher Order Logic. Academic and industrial researchers involved in formal hardware and software design and verification methods should find the publication especially interesting and it is hoped it will also provide a useful reference tool for those working at software institutes and within the electronics industries.
