Book excerpt: Radiant slab heating systems are receiving considerable attention due to the multiple advantages they offer such as improved thermal comfort in buildings and suitability for other related applications in cold climates, particularly snow melting and de-icing of pavements and infrastructure. Hydronic radiant heating can utilize low temperature renewable energy heat sources. The operation of these systems can be optimized by applying predictive control and further the energy costs can be reduced by optimizing their interaction with smart grids by utilizing the flexibility in their demand profiles. However, compared to conventional air heating systems, radiant systems have several added complexities such as the slow transient heat conduction within the slab. Efficient design and operation of radiant slabs require several critical decisions on design and control variables to maintain comfortable thermal conditions in the space and achieve slab surface temperatures within the recommended range depending on the application. This thesis presents a methodology for modelling of hydronic radiant slab heating systems with significant thermal mass (a concrete layer with embedded tubes) for predictive control to utilize the energy flexibility of the building and/or infrastructure in interaction with smart grids and dynamic pricing of electricity. The modelling approaches include low-order grey box models as well as frequency domain techniques. Each approach has its own specific advantages and unique information can be obtained from each one that complement each other when optimizing system operation and designing the control strategies. Using the developed frequency domain model of the zone, key transfer functions are calculated for a case study. By means of transfer functions, the effect of different levels of thermal mass on the zone thermal response and quantification of the energy flexibility in response to grid signals is studied. The model is used to evaluate different design and operation options on a relative basis. It is shown how transfer function analysis provides insight into the building thermal dynamics without the need for simulations. A new transfer function that relates the radiant floor heat source at the bottom of the slab to the zone air temperature is introduced and its derivation is demonstrated. By means of the transfer function, the delay between the heat input of the radiant slab and zone air temperature is determined. Experiments with a full scale test room in an environmental chamber are used to validate the key design parameters obtained from the frequency domain transfer function regarding the operational strategies for energy flexibility of the thermal zone. Frequency domain techniques may also be utilized to establish the appropriate order for low-order RC models for different applications. A low-order thermal network RC model for a case study, validated with experimental measurements, is utilized to study several predictive control strategies in response to changes in the grid price signal, including short term, more reactive changes of the order of 10-15 minutes notice. An index is utilized to quantify the energy flexibility with the focus on the peak demand reduction for specific periods of time when the electricity prices are higher than usual. It is shown that the developed predictive control strategies can aid greatly in minimizing the electricity cost of the building and up to 100% reduction in peak power demand and energy consumption is achieved during the high price periods. Low-order thermal models are also utilized to study radiant slab heating systems of infrastructure that have much higher thermal mass than the radiant slabs in buildings due to structural reasons. Hydronic heating of roads and pavements surfaces to avoid ice formation has several advantages compared to traditional surface salting and other anti-skid methods which have a lot of limitations. However, the traditional method of designing such systems does not consider the thermal mass of the system and its potential for predictive control, energy flexibility and optimized performance. Finally, predictive control strategies are presented and studied to take advantage of the hydronic slab thermal mass and minimize the energy consumption and peak power demand and are validated in a full scale experiment in an environmental chamber.

Meanwhile, buildings can also provide energy flexibility services to the grid with their related assets, e.g. energy storage. Demand Response (DR) of building systems has been considered a feasible solution to shift loads, or to reduce the peak demands. This approach is less costly and more environmentally-friendly than operating reserve power, or investing in extra power plants. DR can play a more important role for load balancing when the grid integrates with renewable energy sources, which are intermittent and variable. This thesis investigates the energy flexibility potential in buildings for the grid through simulation studies. A general methodology to characterize the building energy flexibility is proposed along with a set of indicators. The methodology is applied to a detailed building model of a typical Canadian home, which is calibrated with monthly and hourly measured data. The calibration evaluates not only the energy use required by the ASHRAE guideline 14, but also the dynamic indoor conditions, which is important to study control strategies. Simulation results, based on the calibrated model, show that the energy flexibility provided by the building thermal mass is significant, even for typical Canadian residential buildings with a low thermal mass. The amount of flexible energy however depends on the weather condition, time of day, duration of the DR event and occupancy scenario of the building. The control strategy of the space conditioning system has also a high impact on the energy flexibility. An advanced control method called Model Predictive Control (MPC) is investigated. Prior to applying the MPC method on energy flexibility study, a general supervisory MPC framework is presented. Common issues associated with modelling errors, state estimation, and parameter identification are discussed in detail. The framework is then applied to two different types of controller models : a detailed model and a simplified model of the studied building respectively. The MPC method is shown to be able to increase the building flexibility as compared to the Rule-Based Control (RBC) strategy. MPC with the detailed model delivers the highest flexible energy, twice or three times of the RBC method depending on the time of the DR event.

The overall model consists of a boiler, an embedded tube floor slab and building enclosure. The overall model was described by nonlinear differential equations, which were programmed and solved using in MATLAB. The RFH system model has been applied to both a single zone and a multi-zone RFH system. The predicted dynamic responses of the model under several operating conditions were studied. Also, a zonal model of RFH system was developed to study the air temperature distribution in the zone. Three different control strategies for improving the performance of RFH systems were explored. These are: (i) a conventional PI control, (ii) a predictive control and (iii) an optimal control. The simulation results show that PI control strategy is an efficient control strategy for RFH system from the point of view of temperature regulation. The simulation results also show that the predictive PI control maintains zone air temperature close to the set-point better than the conventional PI control. Besides, the predictive PI control strategy saves 10∼15% energy, compared to the conventional PI control strategy. In addition, the simulation results also show that the optimal PI control strategy could slightly improve both the zone air temperature regulation and energy efficiency, compared to the predictive PI control. Since the predictive control strategy is simple and easy to implement, it is considered as a good candidate strategy for RFH systems.

In cold countries like Canada, heating systems contribute to a large share of the total building energy demand. Smart and efficient solutions to reduce building energy consumption are continually being explored through multi-disciplinary fields of research. This thesis focuses on the development and analysis of a central model predictive control (MPC) strategy for both comfort as well as energy management. In this work, the building simulations are done using a well-established simulation software TRNSYS (Transient System Simulation Tool) and the controllers are designed and simulated in MATLAB using standard computation routines. The thesis is conceptually divided into two parts. A simulation-based analytical study of two typical Canadian residential heating systems, namely electric baseboard heaters (BB) and hydronic radiant floor heating (RFH) systems is presented in the first part. The study focuses on the modelling and characterization of the RFH and BB heating systems, highlighting the differences between their respective heating dynamics and related effects on their performance. A closed-loop MPC is designed and implemented for indoor temperature control. Various control scenarios are simulated to study the individual and cooperative performances of the two heating systems. Two novel MPC schemes are proposed to design a collaborative heating system using RFH and BB. These cooperative control schemes, namely the Sequential and Simultaneous approaches, have the identical goal of improving the performance of the slow-reacting RFH in maintaining the indoor operative temperature within predefined bounds while reducing the energy cost. In the Sequential approach, separate MPCs successively perform the optimizations for the RFH and BB whereas for the Simultaneous approach a single MPC optimizes the two heating systems. The MPC optimization also considers a thermal energy storage unit, incorporated as a part of the RFH system, for optimal energy usage based on variable Time-of-Use rate.The HVAC system constitutes an integral part of the building energy management system. In the second part of the thesis, a novel centralized MPC based building energy management system (BEMS) is proposed. The new residential setup used here is equipped with a photovoltaic (PV) solar system and a battery storage unit. An air-to-air multi-split heat pump (HP) is used as the primary heating system. The electric baseboard (BB) unit in each zone is used as a secondary system. The MPC is simultaneously responsible for controlling the heating inputs of the HP and BB units for comfort management, as well as for the control of energy flow between the PV, the home-battery and the bidirectional grid system. Variable Time-of-Use (ToU) rates are considered for the energy cost calculation and Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) is considered for selling energy to the grid. The MPC strategy is further modified to incorporate an electric vehicle (EV). The EV is considered as an intermittently available extended battery storage unit. Uncertainties related to the EV availability schedule, home-work-home trip discharges and state of charge (SOC) of the battery are considered. A Monte Carlo based uncertainty analysis is presented to estimate the reliability of MPC performance against the disturbances introduced into the system. Using recurring parameter identification and model-reset, the building dynamics are represented by an explicit discrete time-varying state-space formulation. Next, these models are applied in a predictive control framework in which the objective is to enhance energy efficiency and energy flexibility of the building by prioritizing the import from the most efficient energy source(s), storing energy in the building's thermal mass and/or a battery, and shifting the HVAC load to lower the stress on the local grid. Finally, the benefits of predictive control strategies for HVAC load management, both for the building owners and the local grid, are studied through a seasonal simulation where the performance of the building subject to a reference reactive controller and a predictive controller are compared. Applying the predictive controller, the results show an average of 12.1% reduction in the daily heating load, 19.8% reduction in the total daily import, 68.1% reduction in the peak demand, 67.0% reduction in the daily energy cost, and 13.4% increase in the self-consumption of on-site generated solar electricity for the duration of January 1st to March 31st (90 days), compared to the reactive controller.

However, these systems do not operate on conventional time scales and there is often a delay between a thermostat's signal and the system's response. This research lays out a framework of how to overcome this problem by linking an energy model to weather forecasts to inform the controls. An overview of radiant systems and technologies demonstrates its inherent advantages for conditioning buildings. A method for connecting an energy model to control hardware for remote co-simulation is developed and tested. Results indicated operational savings of at least 12% could be achieved through the remote co-simulation approach. Once it was verified that an OpenStudio model could be used for virtual commissioning, the focus turned towards modeling of a radiant slab. Extensive data was collected at a design office in Boise Idaho with a radiant slab used for heating and cooling. An OpenStudio model was built and calibrated so that it could predict the heating and cooling required of the radiant slab in real time. A framework is set up for performing parametric simulations and incorporating weather forecasts into the energy model. The model was used to predict ideal control setpoints by using short simulations of four hours into the future. Model comparisons indicated that using the model to guide the control setpoints could save up to 13% of HVAC energy over one month and the office space was kept significantly more comfortable compared to the current control scheme.

Simulations of the control strategies and the model-based energy analysis for the overall system have been presented in this thesis. The hybrid hydronic system is composed of a conventional natural gas fired boiler hot water heating and a ground source heat pump system. The overall system consists of several components such as a boiler, a heat exchanger, a ground loop heat pump, a ground loop heat exchanger, baseboard heaters, and radiant floor hydraulic piping systems. The system model was described by nonlinear differential equations, which were programmed and solved using MATLAB. Two control strategies for improving the overall system performance were explored: (i) a conventional PI control, and (ii) an adaptive gain control. The simulation results subject to set-point changes showed that the performance of the adaptive controller is better than the fixed gain PI controller in disturbance rejection and stability. Energy simulations under three different operating strategies were conducted: (i) a conventional fixed set-point PI control, (ii) an outdoor air temperature reset control, and (iii) an optimal set-point PI control. It was shown that the outdoor temperature reset strategy can save 4.5% and 19.9% energy under cold day and mild day conditions compared to the conventional fixed set-point PI control strategy. In addition, the iv implementation of the optimal PI control strategy result in higher energy savings 6.6% and 22% as compared to the base case under cold and mild day conditions, respectively.
