Book excerpt: We present a general method for making cross comparable estimates of the benefits of NASA-developed decision support technologies for air traffic management, and we apply a specific implementation of the method to estimate benefits of three decision support tools (DSTs) under development in NASA's advanced Air Transportation Technologies Program: Active Final Approach Spacing Tool (A-FAST), Expedite Departure Path (EDP), and Conflict Probe and Trial Planning Tool (CPTP). The report also reviews data about the present operation of the national airspace system (NAS) to identify opportunities for DST's to reduce delays and inefficiencies. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss a new approach to unsupervised learning and data exploration that involves summarizing a large data set using a small set of ``representative'' elements. These representatives may be presented to a user in order to provide intuition regarding the distribution of observations. Alternatively, these representatives can be used as cases for more detailed analysis. We call the problem of selecting the representatives the Unsupervised Prototype Reduction problem. We discuss the KC-UPR method for this problem and compare it to other existing methods that may be applied to this problem. We propose a new type of distance measure that allows for more interpretable presentation of results from the KC-UPR method. We demonstrate how solutions from the Unsupervised Prototype Reduction problem may be used to provide decision support for the planning of air traffic management initiatives, and we produce computational results that compare the effectiveness of several methods in this application. We also provide an example of how the KC-UPR method can be used for data exploration, using data from air traffic management initiatives at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Book Synopsis A Methodology for Determining Aircraft Fuel Burn Using Air Traffic Control Radar Data by : Matthew Price Elliott
Download or read book A Methodology for Determining Aircraft Fuel Burn Using Air Traffic Control Radar Data written by Matthew Price Elliott and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The air traffic system in the United States is currently undergoing a complete overhaul known as "NextGen". NextGen is the FAA's initiative to update the antiquated National Airspace System (NAS) both procedurally and technologically to reduce costs to the users and negative impacts on the general public. There are currently numerous studies being conducted that are focused on finding optimal solutions to the problems of congestion, delay, and the high fuel and noise footprints associated aircraft operations. These studies require accurate simulation techniques to assess the potential benefits and drawbacks for new procedures and technology. One common method uses air traffic control radar data. As an aircraft travels through the air traffic control system, its latitude, longitude, and altitude are recorded at set intervals. From these values, estimates of groundspeed and heading can be derived. Researchers then use this data to estimate aircraft performance parameters such as engine thrust and aircraft configuration, variables essential to estimate fuel burn, noise, and emissions.
Book Synopsis Implications of Modern Decision Science for Military Decision-support Systems by : Paul K. Davis

This book was released on 2005 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A selective review of modern decision science and implications for decision-support systems. The study suggests ways to synthesize lessons from research on heuristics and biases with those from "naturalistic research." It also discusses modern tools, such as increasingly realistic simulations, multiresolution modeling, and exploratory analysis, which can assist decisionmakers in choosing strategies that are flexible, adaptive, and robust.
