Book excerpt: The people of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania voted Democratic for decades, until Donald Trump flipped it in 2016. What happened? Named one of the "juiciest political books to come in 2018" by Entertainment Weekly. In The Forgotten, Ben Bradlee Jr. reports on how voters in Luzerne County, a pivotal county in a crucial swing state, came to feel like strangers in their own land - marginalized by flat or falling wages, rapid demographic change, and a liberal culture that mocks their faith and patriotism. Fundamentally rural and struggling with changing demographics and limited opportunity, Luzerne County can be seen as a microcosm of the nation. In The Forgotten, Trump voters speak for themselves, explaining how they felt others were 'cutting in line' and that the federal government was taking too much money from the employed and giving it to the idle. The loss of breadwinner status, and more importantly, the loss of dignity, primed them for a candidate like Donald Trump. The political facts of a divided America are stark, but the stories of the men, women and families in The Forgotten offer a kaleidoscopic and fascinating portrait of the complex on-the-ground political reality of America today.

Pennsylvania in Public Memory attempts to answer that question, exploring the emergence of a heritage culture of industry and its loss through the lens of its most representative industrial state. Based on news coverage, interviews, and more than two hundred heritage sites, this book traces the narrative themes that shape modern public memory of coal, steel, railroading, lumber, oil, and agriculture, and that collectively tell a story about national as well as local identity in a changing social and economic world.

Book excerpt: The Keystone State, so nicknamed because it was geographically situated in the middle of the thirteen original colonies and played a crucial role in the founding of the United States, has remained at the heart of American history. Created partly as a safe haven for people from all walks of life, Pennsylvania is today the home of diverse cultures, religions, ethnic groups, social classes, and occupations. Many ideas, institutions, and interests that were formed or tested in Pennsylvania spread across America and beyond, and continue to inform American culture, society, and politics. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the first comprehensive history of the Keystone State in almost three decades. In it distinguished scholars view Pennsylvania's history critically and honestly, setting the Commonwealth's story in the larger context of national social, cultural, economic, and political development. Part I offers a narrative history and Part II offers a series of "Ways to Pennsylvania's Past" -- nine concise guides designed to enable readers to discover Pennsylvania's heritage for themselves. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the result of a unique collaboration between The Pennsylvania State University Press and The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The result is a remarkable account of how Pennsylvanians have lived, worked, and played through the centuries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Message of the Governor of Pennsylvania, Transmitted to the Senate and House of Representatives: Read in Both Houses, on Wednesday, January 6, 1847 Since the last adjournment of the General Assembly, the peace, which had so long subsisted between this nation and, the other nations of the world, has been disturbed by the war between the United States and Mexico. The grave causes which have produced this rupture, are ably, and satisfactorily set forth in the late annual Message of, the President to_ Congress. They show a dignified forbearance on the part of this Government, under multiplied wrongs and aggressions, and, a laudable desire to pre serve peace, while its blessings could be secured consistently with the national honor. A free people conscious that they ask nothing but What is right, cannot submit to wrong, and however much they may deprecate the evils of war, their just rights must be maintained. Hence Congress, on the 13th of May, 1846, announced, that bythe act pf Mexico a state of war existed between that government and the United States, and for the purpose of prosecuting it to a speedy and successful termination, the President 'was authorized ti) employ the militia, naval and military forces of the United States, and to call for'and accept the services of fifty thousand volunteers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Message of the Governor of Pennsylvania, Transmitted to the Senate and House of Representatives: January 5, 1853 The management of the public works is an independent branch of the public ser vice, and has been confided to the care of agents selected by the people. It might seem unbecoming, therefore, in an officer of this department of the government to discuss the action of the highly competent gentlemen who at present discharge the troublesome duties appertaining to the office of Canal Commissioner; nor can any good result from a discussion of the policy which has heretofore governed the Penn sylvania railroad company.
