Download or read book Menno-Nightcaps written by S. L. Klassen and published by TouchWood Editions. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A satirical cocktail book featuring seventy-seven cocktail recipes accompanied by arcane trivia on Mennonite history, faith, and cultural practices. At last, you think, a book of cocktails that pairs punny drinks with Mennonite history! Yes, cocktail enthusiast and author of the popular Drunken Mennonite blog Sherri Klassen is here to bring some Low German love to your bar cart. Drinks like Brandy Anabaptist, Migratarita, Thrift Store Sour, and Pimm’s Cape Dress are served up with arcane trivia on Mennonite history, faith, and cultural practices. Arranged by theme, the book opens with drinks inspired by the Anabaptists of sixteenth-century Europe (Bloody Martyr, anyone?), before moving on to religious beliefs and practices (a little like going to a bar after class in Seminary, but without actually going to class). The third chapter toasts the Mennonite history of migration (Old Piña Colony), and the fourth is all about the trappings of Mennonite cultural identity (Singalong Sling). With seventy-seven recipes, ripping satire, comical illustrations, a cocktails-to-mocktails chapter for the teetotallers, and instructions on scaling up for barn-raisings and funerals, it’s just the thing for the Mennonite, Menno-adjacent, or merely Menno-curious home mixologist.
Book Synopsis The Constructed Mennonite by : Hans Werner
Download or read book The Constructed Mennonite written by Hans Werner and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Werner was a storyteller. A Mennonite immigrant in southern Manitoba, he captivated his audiences with tales of adventure and perseverance. With every telling he constructed and reconstructed the memories of his life. John Werner was a survivor. Born in the Soviet Union just after the Bolshevik Revolution, he was named Hans and grew up in a German-speaking Mennonite community in Siberia. As a young man in Stalinist Russia, he became Ivan and fought as a Red Army soldier in the Second World War. Captured by Germans, he was resettled in occupied Poland where he became Johann, was naturalized and drafted into Hitler’s German army where he served until captured and placed in an American POW camp. He was eventually released and then immigrated to Canada where he became John. The Constructed Mennonite is a unique account of a life shaped by Stalinism, Nazism, migration, famine, and war. It investigates the tenuous spaces where individual experiences inform and become public history; it studies the ways in which memory shapes identity, and reveals how context and audience shape autobiographical narratives.

This book was released on 2022-01-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only a female, only a farmer's daughter, only a Mennonite - this mental script characterized Barbara Reed for many years. Later, only a missionary amplified her personal insecurities. But defining moments throughout a life well lived, learning to trust and rely on a deep faith in a personal Savior, molded her into a confident, resourceful, and successful woman who learned she had so much to offer others. From humble beginnings, the youngest of 10 children raised on a Pennsylvania potato farm, to the mission field of Somalia; from the beginnings of a nursing career to serving in a mental health hospital; from raising four children in a foreign country to holding the hand of her beloved husband through a long and devastating battle with Alzheimer's, Standing on Holy Ground - and Some Not so Holy gives testimony to God's abundant grace, even through a near-death experience and a distressing emotional crisis.

Book Synopsis In Search of Promised Lands by : Samuel J. Steiner
Download or read book In Search of Promised Lands written by Samuel J. Steiner and published by Herald Press. This book was released on 2015-03-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wide-ranging story of Mennonite migration, theological diversity, and interaction with other Christian streams is distilled in this engaging volume, which tracks the history of Ontario Mennonites. Author Samuel J. Steiner writes that Ontario Mennonites and Amish are among the most diverse in the world—in their historical migrations and cultural roots, in their theological responses to the world around them, and in the various ways they have pursued their personal and communal salvation. In Search of Promised Lands describes the emergence and evolution of today’s 30-plus streams of Ontarians who have identified themselves as Mennonite or Amish from their arrival in Canada to the last decade. In Search of Promised Lands also considers how various Mennonite groups have adapted to or resisted evangelical fundamentalism and mainline Protestantism, and it identifies the nineteenth- and twentieth-century shifts toward personal salvation and away from submission to the church community. Volume 48 in the Studies in Anabaptist and Mennonite History series. Find out more about Ontario Mennonite and Amish history at the author’s blog.
