Book Synopsis Development of European Forests until 2050 by : G.J. Nabuurs
Download or read book Development of European Forests until 2050 written by G.J. Nabuurs and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Europe, forest policy discussions are moving towards a European-Union-wide strategy. This will further strengthen the relations between the European countries in the field of forests and forest management. European-wide forest planning and decision-making require that policy-makers have insight in the long-term development of European forests under alternative regimes. The European Forest Information Scenario Model (EFISCEN) was used to make projections of the development of the European forests under four different scenarios. This book addresses the consequences of each scenario for wood production, biodiversity, and the environmental functions of the forest. The results provide policy-makers with a challenge of whether to intervene in the ongoing trend of build-up of growing stock and whether to choose between enhancing biodiversity, increasing the use of domestically produced wood products, or to combine them.

Book Synopsis National Forest Inventories by : Claude Vidal
Download or read book National Forest Inventories written by Claude Vidal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the current state and good practices of national forest inventories in monitoring wood resources and demonstrates pathways for harmonisation and improved common reporting. Beyond a general overview over availability and use of wood resources in different countries, it provides a unique collection of original contributions from national forest inventory experts with in-depth descriptions of current NFI methods in assessing wood availability and wood use in European countries, and selected countries from America and Asia. The main topics are national definitions and improvements in common reporting of forests available for wood supply, stem quality and assortments, estimation of change including growth and drain, and tree resources outside forest land. The book is a must-have for everyone who is contributing to national forest inventories either methodologically or operatively, for people who want or need to understand national forest inventory provided data and information on the availability of wood resources. By providing profound knowledge it is a valuable basis for scientists involved in scenario modelling and analysing effects of climate change, as well as individuals in private organisations and public administrations promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and the potential of green economy.
Book Synopsis Modeling and Optimization of Biomass Supply Chains by : Calliope Panoutsou
Download or read book Modeling and Optimization of Biomass Supply Chains written by Calliope Panoutsou and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling and Optimization of Biomass Supply Chains: Top Down and Bottom Up Assessment for Agricultural, Forest and Waste Feedstock provides scientific evidence for assessing biomass supply and logistics, placing emphasis on methods, modeling capacities, large data collection, processing and storage. The information presented builds on recent relevant research work from the Biomass Futures, Biomass Policies and S2Biom projects. In addition to technical issues, the book covers the economic, social and environmental aspects with direct implications on biomass availability. Its chapters offer an overview of methodologies for assessing and modeling supply, biomass quality and requirements for different conversion processes, logistics and demand for biobased sectors. Case studies from the projects that inspire the book present practical examples of the implementation of these methodologies. The authors also compare methodologies for different regions, including Europe and the U.S. Biomass feedstock-specific chapters address the relevant elements for forest, agriculture, biowastes, post-consumer wood and non-food crops. Engineers in the bioenergy sector, as well as researchers and graduate students will find this book to be a very useful resource when working on optimization and modeling of biomass supply chains. For energy policymakers, analysts and consultants, the book provides consistent and technically sound projections for policy and market development decisions. - Provides consistent ratios and indicators for assessing biomass supply and its logistical component - Explores assumptions behind the assessment of different types of biomass, including key technical and non-technical factors - Presents the existing modeling platforms, their input requirements and possible output projections

Download or read book Sustainable Forestry in Southern Sweden written by Kristina Blennow and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-05-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest findings about the environmental, social, and economic impact of sustainable forestry Forestry is one of the most important foundations of the Scandinavian economies. Sustainable Forestry in Southern Sweden: The SUFOR Research Project closely reviews the findings from the eight-year research program first launched in 1997 that searched for ways to maintain sustainable forestry in the region. Respected scholars and experts discuss ways to bridge the chasm separating the world of research with the world of trade and industry. Biodiversity, the impact of humans, environmental conditions, and other facets of sustainability are all presented and discussed in detail. Sustainable Forestry in Southern Sweden begins with an overview of Swedish forestry and the sustainability debate in Sweden. The full range of human impact is examined in detail with an eye on biodiversity issues. Other research includes the effect of deer browsing on forest development, the importance of root distribution, nutrient sustainability, fresh strategies for long-term forest sustainability, active risk management, and important policy issues. The book is extensively referenced and includes several tables to ensure clarity of data. Sustainable Forestry in Southern Sweden discusses in detail: the background of the SUFOR program the impact of lower fire-frequency on forest biodiversity transforming research results into useful knowledge for forest practitioners balancing costs and benefits related to deer and moose population density effects of adverse environmental conditions on sensitive trees nutrient availability in plant productivity applicability of mixed stands in sustainable forestry weathering rates of forest soils analysis of sustainability conditions from environmental, social, and economic standpoints multi-objective forest landscape projection models risk management in sustainable forestry moving from policy to implementation of sustainability and biodiversity policy implications resulting from the SUFOR program Sustainable Forestry in Southern Sweden is enlightening, informative reading for scholars, students, and practitioners in land management issues.
Book Synopsis Developing Principles and Models for Sustainable Forestry in Sweden by : H. Sverdrup
Download or read book Developing Principles and Models for Sustainable Forestry in Sweden written by H. Sverdrup and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book is summarized those management principles that should be valid in areas where forests continuously are used for production, where biodiversity aspects are important as well as economy and productivity, and where demands on soil status and water quality are set. Especially the very long-term aspects are emphasized, and it is shown how system model thinking is used to reach the goals. Biogeochemical aspects are put forward as they are very important in areas on poor bedrock with acid soils. Forest vitality and stress on trees are treated, as well as the importance of wildlife and their effects of browsing. The balance between social and recreational demands from the society and the economical needs of the landowner is of great concern. Experiences from a special area in South Sweden are presented.
