Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Zoology Since the conditions under which laboratory work is done vary exceedingly, it is impossible to outline a course which will be equally acceptable to all teachers. This little book, therefore, presents more forms than any teacher will be likely to want, in the hope that from among them a selection may be made that is fairly satisfactory. The frog is taken up first among the vertebrates, and very fully, so that, if preferred, it may be used as an introductory study instead of the crawfish. In this case, however, the pupil will need the teacher's help in answering a few questions referring to work in the earlier part of the book. In the opinion of the author the crawfish is much the best form that can be used for such a study, since it is remarkably well adapted to bring out many fundamental ideas, while being less specialized in its organs than either frog or grasshopper, and standing more nearly midway between the highest and the lowest forms. The studies in experimental chemistry and physiology which follow this are to be used at the discretion of the teacher in those classes where no work has been done along this line in connection with human physiology. The experiments may be given as demonstrations by the teacher, or the simpler ones may be assigned to pupils for performance before the class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Zoology: For the Use of Students With a General Introduction on the Principles of Zoology The call for a new issue of this work within little more than six months after the appearance of the last, is a very gratifying proof that, in spite of its defects, the work supplies a recognised want, and that the Author has to some extent succeeded in the objects aimed at. With regard to the present edition, the Author need only say that the entire work has been carefully revised, and all the more striking discoveries of recent 'date have been noticed, whilst some errors have been corrected. Considerable additions have also been made, especially in the department of Vertebrate Zoology. The Author, however, would ask his readers to remember that the compass of the work will not admit of the introduction of many details, which must be sought for in other more extensive treatises, and that only the more important facts of Natural History should be looked for in a work of such limited size. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Zoology Ideas differ considerably as to what constitutes the best course in zoology for secondary schools, but we cannot be far wrong if we succeed in combining a general knowledge of animals and of zoological principles with a discussion of the relations of animals to man, in such a way as to interest the students. The constant references to the relations of animals to their environ ment and the selection of common animals, especially those of economic importance, for illustrative purposes tend to stimulate the natural interest of boys and girls in animal life. Students who declare that they cannot draw will receive little sym pathy. Anyone can make the simple line drawings required in this work. To make a drawing proceed as follows. First determine how large it is to be and select a proper space on the page. Then rule this space with very light vertical and horizontal guide lines so that your drawing will be symmetrical. With a ruler further reduce or enlarge the length or width of the actual Object to fit the space selected. Then with very light lines make an outline of the object; then, constantly referring to the Object, correct this with light lines until the propor tions and details are as nearly like the Object as you can possibly get them. Then erase the light lines until you can barely see them, and go over them making the final lines firm and clear. Every line upon the drawing must represent a structure actually present on the Object. Avoid shading, color, crosshatch ing, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Steps to Zoology All these animals it is the business of the zoologist to divide into groups, so that those may be placed together which are alike, and those may be separated, more or less remotely, which are different. The task is one that no single individual could accomplish by his own efforts 3 but it has been done by the combined and successive labours of many. In this way the entire animal kingdom has been divided into a number of great groups, distinguished from one another by peculiarities of structure. This is a rich field for scientific activity; its enormous range is a consequence, on the one hand, of the well-nigh exhaustless variety of animal organization, and, on the other hand, of the different points of view from which the zoologist enters upon the solution of his problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book in General Zoology In offering to the educational public this text-book in general zoology, with the guide for laboratory and field work designed to be used in connection with it, we desire to explain in brief the method of construction we have followed. The treatment Of the phyla is in a descending order from the Arthropoda to the Protozoa, and in an ascending order from the fishes to man, with the exception that the Mollusca are described after instead of before the Arthropoda. After many years Of experience with classes of young students we believe that an order of treatment resembling this is likely to yield the best results, although we do not deny that good results may be Obtained with young students by following what is sometimes called the order of evolution, beginning with the Protozoa. Although the chapters are interdependent, we think that there is sufficient unity in each to make it possible for the teacher to diverge from the order we have employed. Most of the books I have alluded to above, are in my own library, but still I have often felt the want of a Manual, which should contain the characters of every Class, Order, Tribe, Family, and Genus, of our native marine animals, so ar ranged as to be suitable for ready reference. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Zoology, Vol. 1 of 2 The Object of the present Work is to set forth the Divine Wisdom and goodness as displayed in the animate creation. With this View, the Author has endeavoured so to divest it of mere technicalities as to be intelligible and interesting to general readers, and, at the same time, to render it not unsuited as a manual to those who wish to enter upon the study Of Zoology as a science. He has not, therefore, confined himself to the biography of animals, how ever amusing, but has aimed to shew the amazing diversity in the details of animal structure; its per fect adaptation to required functions; the modification of organs common to various forms; the develope ment of intelligence; and the union of all into a grand whole, so perfect, so beautifully consistent, that none but an All-wise Mind could have contrived, none but an Almighty Hand could have created it.
