Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. This little manual grew out of a want felt by the writer in her experience as a teacher,—viz., that of light and interesting sketches of the famous men of art and letters whose genius has filled the civilized world with their immortal renown. The desire to supply in some measure this want has induced the preparation of this little volume; and Spain has been selected as the field for a first experiment, because no literature is more distinguished than is the elder Spanish for richness of invention, for beauty of style, for purity of moral tone, and for a lofty spirit of national pride and patriotic devotion. "With its projected companions, the Manuals of Italy and Germany, it is intended to awaken in the young reader a taste for literature and art, the gratification of which will be a source of future enjoyment. As the local habitation which has been rendered illustrious by the genius of the great always excites a feeling of interest, the writer has adopted cities rather than centuries as the basis of connection or arrangement for the sketches of the several characters. It is due to the Rev. Robert Turnbull to state that this plan was first suggested by his interesting book, "The Genius of Italy." Occasionally a ballad or brief poetical extract has been introduced; but generally the simple aim has been to inspire interest, and lead the reader to peruse the charming pages of Ticknor, Roscoe, Sismondi, Hallam, arid Schlegel, as well as the original writers in Spanish, Italian, and German literature. To Professor Ticknor the author desires to render the most grateful acknowledgments for the kind permission given to make use of his valuable work on Spanish Literature; a permission of which she has been happy to avail herself in nearly all of the translations from that language which appear in these pages. "Fame," to use the striking language of Sismondi, "does not possess a strong memory. For a long flight, she relieves herself of all unnecessary incumbrances. She rejects, on her departure and in her course, many who thought themselves accepted by her, and she comes down to late ages with the lightest possible burthen." Therefore the names chosen in the manuals are few, and those chiefly whom we behold "through a succession of ages, like the loftiest summits of the Alps, which, the farther we recede from them, appear to rise higher."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish School: Loan Collection The Spanish masterpieces impress by an exposure of the subject so thorough, so frank, with so great a dis dain for amelioration, that the efiect seems often cruel, and at the same time there is so subtle a sense of values, so great a skill in portrayal, that the graces of the art seem to be unnecessary and out of place. Grim and sardonic, vigorous and splendid, with truth, arrogant in manner and in color, and with great dignity, the art of Spain is distinctive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School of Madrid Senor de Beruete y Moret carries the history of Spanish painting since Velazquez down to the time of its decline under the alien in uence of the Italian Luca di Giordano, content to leave it with a bare reminder of the later striking personality, Francisco Goya, who was again to raise it from a period of poverty to one of rare distinction. In this tale of Spanish painting we are introduced, besides, to one of the two forms in which, as the author says, Spanish national life finds most typical expression, and the one more readily com prehensible, in its universal medium, to the foreign student, since the other, which is drama, is veiled by difference of language. Thus this book, which coincides with the recent reawakening of interest in the art of the seventeenth century, is certain of cordial welcome, alike for the breadth and originality of the author's views and the profundity of his learning. Of the illustrations - many of them of works now made known for the first time - three call for special mention here. They reproduce celebrated paintings in English collections once unhesitatingly given to Velazquez, but claimed by Senor de Beruete y Moret. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Masters: An Outline of the History of Painting in Spain MY design in these chapters is but to give a rapid sketch of the great Spanish painters, and to express some of my love for the treasures of Spanish art; a love not begun, but deepened by the study of the galleries of Madrid. Spain is still a wonderland to the art student; a long era of religious oppression robbed it indeed of much wealth, yet it remains a land of romance and art. The enthusi astic studies of stirling-maxwell, Head, and Ford, have opened rich treasures to the eager student; but except their volumes (and they are all out of print), there is scarcely any thing on the subject in our English tongue. The student of Spanish art is forced to seek elsewhere his knowledge, and for a thorough study he must go back to Cean Bermudez's invaluable Dictionary of Spanish Painters, from which I have gleaned much information, and to the amusing pages of Palomino and Fonz. Yet these works must necessarily be within the reach of but few; and this fact will perhaps excuse my venturing to sketch the great masters of Spanish painting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of English Literature In general, I _may say that the substance Of this Manual is Professor Morley's, and that the construction Of it is mine. Even with reference to the substance Of the book, however, I Ought to explain that it differs in many, respects from the First Sketch. I have retained from that work the essential part Of'every thing bearing directly upon English literature; but I have tried to leave out every thing whose relation to English literature was either indirect, or, for American readers, bewildering: such as, on the one hand, extended references to Italian, French, and Spanish literatures; or, on the other hand, a multitude Of. Incidental allusions - genealogical, domestic, local, and titular - that would perplex no student in England, but are sure to perplex most students in America. But my changes in the substance Of the First Sketch have not been confined to those Of omission. Wherever I. Thought it desirable, I have freely added materials not in the original work: for example, all Of the Introduction excepting the first section several pages Of the chapters on the fifteenth century; the larger part of the account Of the nineteenth century; besides many Of the paragraphs Of introduction and transition scattered through the book. But the most Of my work upon the substance Of this Manual cannot be here Specified; it consists Of innumerable small bits Of alteration and addition, fitted in and mixed up with the original materials, and no longer distinguishable from them except by a careful collation 'of the two books-item by item. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Spanish Painters, Vol. 2 of 2: Comprehending That Part of Their Biography There are still beautiful Spanish standards, of this and former periods, tolerably preserved; but al though much mention is made of marine decora tions throughout the memoirs of fresco painters, who had most helped to furnish them, yet the disasters of time, wars, and weather, destroyed too many, to point out with certainty all their claims to admiration: but common history, as well as that on art, is sufficiently corroborative of the truth that Spain was distinguished for her magnificent streamers on the seas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of English Literature: And of the History of the English Language, From With Numerous Specimens When the South of Britain became a part of the Roman empire, the inhabitants, at least of the towns, seem to have adopted generally the Latin language and applied them selves to the study of the Latin literature. The diffusion among them of this new taste was one of the first means employed by their politic conquerors, as soon as they had fairly established themselves in the island, to rivet their do minion. A more efficacious they could not have devised; and, happily, it was also the best fitted to turn their subjus gation into a blessing to the conquered people. Book excerpt: A sumptuous history of Golden Age Spain that explores the irresistible tension between heavenly and earthly realms. Incomparable Realms offers a vision of Spanish culture and society during the so-called Golden Age, the period from 1500 to 1700 when Spain unexpectedly rose to become the dominant European power. But in what ways was this a Golden Age, and for whom? The relationship between the Habsburg monarchy and the Roman Catholic Church shaped the period, with both constructing narratives to bind Spanish society together. Incomparable Realms unpicks the impact of these two historical forces on thought and culture and examines the people and perspectives such powerful projections sought to eradicate. The book shows that the tension between the heavenly and earthly realms, and in particular the struggle between the spiritual and the corporeal, defines Golden Age culture. In art and literature, mystical theology and moral polemic, ideology, doctrine, and everyday life, the problematic pull of the body and the material world is the unacknowledged force behind early modern Spain. Life is a dream, as the title of Calderón’s famous play of the period proclaimed, but there is always a body dreaming it.
