Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Hygiene and Sanitation The preceding paragraph indicates the individual or personal aspect that marked the common concept of the subject until a comparatively short time ago. More recently the tendency is also to view its func tions, opportunities and problems from a social and altruistic stand-point, and the field has so enlarged in this direction that it is questionable whether it may not be better to supplant the older word - Hygiene when used to refer to the general science, with the newer term - Public Health and Preventive Medicine. But, after all, he who works to improve the sanitary condition of his neighbors and his neighborhood, no matter how extensive these may be in numbers and area, at the same time well serves his own interests, for not only is disease no respecter of persons, but its transmission and dis semination depend very much upon one's relationships with others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hygiene and Sanitation: Gesundheitsbüchlein a Popular Manual to Hygiene, Compiled The spreading of a more general culture, which forms the basis of professional perfection has the effect, that certain provinces of knowledge, which in former times were reserved to the professional man only are becoming the property of every educated man. This broadening of knowledge does not at all mean a restriction of science for the professional Savants. On the contrary. They are enabled to follow the progress of science more closely by receiving a more careful training for their profession, and they can obtain better results with the help of a more educated public, when called upon to make a practical use of their professional knowledge or skill. This development took place in a very marked degree with regard to the science of Hygiene, public Hygiene as well as private sanitation. Download or read book Manual of Hygiene for Schools and Colleges (Classic Reprint) written by Provincial Board of Health of Ontario and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Hygiene for Schools and Colleges The want has long been felt of a work on Hygiene, which would occupy an intermediate place between the elementary text-books for the use of children, and the advanced treatises for practitioners of medicine, sanitary engineers, and other persons intending to become experts in Sanitary Science. This book is designed to meet, in some degree, that want. Whilst many of the calculations, and much of the matter, contained in it are expressed in terms not suited to a child, it is, on the other hand, free, as far as may be, from technical expressions not readily understood by the ordinary reader. Whilst it is primarily intended for teachers, and for pupils in attendance at the Normal and other Schools of the higher grade it is hoped that it may be read with interest and profit by other persons; and that a perusal of it, coupled with an earnest desire to put in practice any good suggestions that may be offered, will be productive of increased health and vigor, and a lessened death-rate. It is intended to present such a knowledge of sanitary matters as every intelligent citizen should possess. It will be found that the book is mainly devoted to considerations of those matters of Hygiene in regard to which a controlling or modifying influence may be exercised by those for whom it is intended. Such points in Physiology and Anatomy are taken up as will aid in the hygienic considerations referred to: it has been felt that people will be more likely to put in practice suggestions in Hygiene, for which they understand the physiological reasons, than they will mere dogmatic directions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Hygiene The work is divided into two books: inthe First I have arranged the chief subjects of hygiene in what is, for my purpose, the most convenient order, and have illustrated them by examples drawn from army life. I have also included some other topics, such as meteorology and statistics, which it is important medical officers should learn. In these several chapters I have thought constantly on what would be useful to army surgeons, who are often far from all books, or possibility of reference. So that, in some parts, I have endeavoured to make the book one of reference, though I have been obliged to compress it to the greatest degree. In the Second Book, the service of the soldier is more particularly described. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Hygiene: And Sanitary Science I very much regret that this Handbook has been out of print for more than a year. While the delay in preparing a new edition has been much interfered with by official duties, it has been mainly due to my earnest endeavour to render the work still more worthy of the very favour able reception which has been accorded to it ever since it was first published. With the exception of a few chapters, all of which have been carefully revised and brought up to date, the whole of the book has been re-written and in spite of every effort to compress, the present edition has been enlarged to the extent of more than two hundred pages, and contains a considerable number of new wood-cuts to illustrate more clearly those portions of the text which apply to ventilation, sanitary fittings and drainage, house building, isolation hospitals, and parasitic diseases.
