Gildas, S. Columbanus, and Isidore, respectively left works CENT. behind them, which do not however require separate notice: '--and having mentioned S. Benedict as the author of his celebrated rule, we shall connect his history with a new head, namely monks and monasteries. S. Benedict was born at the Umbrian Nursia A.D. 480, 10. and of the illustrious family of the Anicii. He began his asce-Order"'0 ticism at the early age of fourteen, in a solitary retreat called s. Benedict Sublacum, about forty miles from Rome. Here he even-the monastually established twelve monasteries, each containing twelvetic order8monks. Afterwards Mount Cassino became his residence, from whence, A.D. 531, he was summoned by Boniface II. to attend a Roman synod. He died about A.D. 542 or 3, and the marvels of his life are elaborately described by S. Gregory the Great in the second book of his Dialogues. His rule has gone through innumerable editions. S. Benedict is to be considered the developer rather than Perpetual the author of the coenobite life: though he was perhaps the imposed' first who introduced a perpetual vow into his regulations. A probation of twelve months preceded admission, during which time the rule was thrice read to the candidate, who promised the most implicit obedience before he could be received into the brotherhood. The order and method, that have been followed in the former part of this Work, cannot be continued, without the greatest inconveniences, in this, which relates to the modern history of the church. From the commencement of the sixteenth century, the face of religion was remarkably changed; the divisions, that had formerly perplexed the church, increased considerably; and the Christian societies, that relinquished the established forms of divine worship, and erected themselves into separate assemblies, upon principles different from those of the Roman hierarchy, multiplied from day to day. This circumstance renders it impossible to present in one connected series, or, as it were, in one continued tablature, the events, vicissitudes, and revolutions, that happened in the church, divided its members, and enfeebled the dominion of its tyrants. From the period on which we low enter, the bond of union among Christians, that had been formed by a blind obedience to the Roman pontiffs, was every where either dissolved, or at least relaxed; and consequently this period of our history must be divided into a multitude of branches, into as many parts as there were famous sects that arose in this century. II. It is, however, proper to observe here, that many of the events, which distinguish this century, had a manifest relation to the church in general, and not to any Christian society in particular. And as these events deserve to be mentioned separately, on account of their remarkable tendency to throw a light upon the state of Christianity in general, as well as upon the history of each particular Christian society, we shall therefore divide this into two main and principal parts, of which the one shall contain the General, and the other the Particular History of the Christian Religion. D. 427 Theodoret, the author of the following history, was born at Antioch, about the year 387. His parents had long been childless; and it is related that much prayer was offered, and especially by Macedonius, a hermit, that a son might be born unto them. Little is known respecting the childhood and early youth of Theodoret, except that his mother, who seems herself to have been a remarkable character, dedicated him to God from his very cradle. According to some accounts he was placed in a monastery at the age of seven, where he studied theology and the sciences under Theodorus of Mopsuestia and St. John Chrysostom. Certain it is, that much of his life was devoted to study; for it is evident from his works that he was a very learned man, conversant with classical and theological literature, and acquainted with several languages besides his own, which was the Syriac. He entered upon the work of the ministry at a very tender age; for he was but a child when he was appointed to be one of the public readers of Scripture.
