Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Debaters' Manual In this volume have been brought together materials that will be of use to the student or individual wishing to know how to prepare a debate or how to organize a debating society or league of debating organizations. While conforming to The Handbook Series in that it is largely a reprint of articles taken from a large number of sources, effort has been made to select those articles that describe the subject most clearly and concisely and, at the same time, give a fairly well-connected account of the various processes. For convenience the work has been divided into two parts. In Part I have been put all the articles relating to the preparation of the individual debate. The articles have been selected so as to describe, in logical order, all the steps through which the debater must go: Selecting the question and defining the terms; analyzing to determine the main issues; collecting and recording evidence; selection and proper use of evidence - this includes a description of the forms of reasoning and fallacies; drafting the brief; preparing the argument from the brief; and practical suggestions for delivery and for the division of the work among the members of the debating team. Part II is devoted to the organization and management of the debating society. In the articles included in this division are conveyed brief and valuable suggestions for organizing a society and drawing up its constitution; the management of the society, including a brief description of the more important rules of order; selecting of the teams; the coaching and judging of a debate. The latter half of Part II is given over to a description of various forms of inter-society debating organizations, with model constitutions. For the benefit of those wishing to read more extensively on the subject, a list of books on debate and public speaking is appended to the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Debate and Oral Discussion: For Schools, Societies and Clubs The purpose of this book is to present in the briefest and simplest manner possible the necessary elementary principles which are observed wherever orderly public discussion takes place, - whether in a formally organized debate on. an unamendable proposition, or in the more informal discussion of separate propositions related to a general topic It is clear that in both situations we are dealing with oral argumentation. The principles to be followed, either in debate or discussion, as these terms are used here, are necessarily very similar. Throughout this text, however, both forms are kept in mind, and here and there special adaptations to one or the other are definitely discussed. Probably the ideal method of studying in this field, of preparing one's self to do effective oral argument, is to pursue a regular course of classroom work. This book is prepared principally with this situation in mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Argumentation: For High Schools and Academies The increasing interest taken in debate by the larger high schools and academies has prompted the preparation of this Manual of Argumentation. There has seemed to be need of a book that would present in a clear and simple way the elements of debate to that large class of students who are not advanced enough to master the rather difficult college text-books on the subject, but who are deeply interested in debating because it appeals to those instincts which are the basis of oratory and as old as the race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Argumentation and Debate The aim of this book is twofold: (1) to present briefly and clearly the theory of argumentation, (2) to furnish a sufficient number of complete debates for a thorough course in analysis and briefing. The discussion of argumentative theory has been condensed, therefore, and, while illustrated to the point of clearness, is suggestive rather than exhaustive, in order that it may be more fully tested in a study of the selections. Some emphasis has been placed upon the principles of logic for the reason that a knowledge of formal logic on the part of the student cannot be presumed. Furthermore, considerable space has been devoted to a study of evidence as it is found in the courts of law. This material will justify itself for the reason that the legal mind is the one best adapted to debate and for the reason that the debater who confines himself within the limitations imposed by the courts not only builds up a stronger argument but is also better prepared to destroy an opposing argument. The selections have been taken from great debates on critical and living issues of American history, politics, and law. For several reasons they will be found well adapted for analysis and briefing. In the first place, they were delivered by men long practiced in controversy, by men thoroughly trained in life's school of practical affairs. In the second place, the questions debated were at the time of the discussions, and still are, of vital moment to the American people. Hence they are of strong interest to every thoughtful student. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Exposition and Argument: A Manual for High Schools, Academies, and Debating Clubs Since Argumentation and Debating was published, in 1908, it has been used by more than one hundred American universities and colleges. Many secondary schools as well, against the advice of the author, have attempted to use the book. It is not wholly adapted to the needs of their pupils, nor does it seem fitting for high schools and academies to give the time to Argu mentation alone that a thorough study of the college text requires. The Essentials of Exposition and Ar gument, though retaining whatever good qualities the earlier book appears to have, is prepared expressly for the use of secondary schools. The aim of this book is to present the Essentials of Exposition and Argument as simply as possible, fol lowing the order in which the difficulties arise in ao tual practice. The point of view is that of the high school student rather than that of the instructor. The amount of practical material, therefore, in proportion to the amount of theoretical material, is larger than is usual in manuals on this subject. The chapter on brief-draw ing, for example, starts with a familiar proposition and takes the student step by step through the develop ment of a complete working brief. The chapter on evi dence deals not only with the tests of evidence, but as well with the sources and the methods of using evi dence. In short, the book aims throughout to show the student how to go to work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School Debate Book EW secondary schools offer courses in debate, and in consideration of this fact the present volume has been prepared. It is hoped that it will be of service to those who wish to engage in public discussion and yet who are unable to secure the advantages of special training. The theoretical side of the subject and its technical di visions, except those germane to the construction of debate, have been purposely avoided, and the suggestions and ex amples given are largely based on the personal experiences of the author. The foremost object has been to present a book that will be useful to the pupil in the high school. To that end every reference in each bibliography has been evaluated, and citations to periodicals that are not available to the average library have been intentionally omitted. There is nothing more exasperating and disheartening to a debater than to have in his possession a large number of references to which he does not have access. With each question, however, bibliography sufficient for a thorough discussion has been included. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The debt of England to the numerous debating societies of Oxford and Cambridge has long been recognized, most Of that country's distinguished orators and statesmen having received their first training in these societies. In America, within the past ten or fifteen years, there has come, in and out of the schools and colleges, a noteworthy re vival of the old-time debating lyceum. Inter scholastic athletics have been paralleled by intel lectual athletics in the form of interscholastic debates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Live Questions for Debate: For the Schools of California The greatest profit from debate is to be gained only when the subjects are adapted to the age and grade of intelligence of the participants. I have, therefore, arranged the questions by grades, beginning with extremely simple ones in the sixth year. Some attempt has also been made to arrange the questions in each year in the order of difficulty of making preparation - a difficulty due either to the depth of the question or to the scarcity of sources of information. Some of the questions in the earlier grades are not in the strictest sense debatable. But two good habits will be formed by the pupil - first, of controlling himself before an audience; second, of marshalling his facts and figures on one side of a question. The teacher, knowing her pupils, is of course the safest guide in assigning questions. Not all children in the sixth grade could debate even the simple questions I have proposed for that year. Grading differs somewhat in different communities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
