Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Church History, Vol. 1 The desire of being, before all else, brief, explains why we have allowed the facts to speak for themselves, and have, so far as possible, refrained from comment. A philosophy of history presupposes a full knowledge of the facts, and where brevity is needed, it is best to confine oneself to the facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Church History, Vol. 1 of 2 May be considered a probable fact, the episcopate of Peter a questionable explanation of his presence at Rome, and its twenty-five years' range a fable confuted by the Scripture history itself. The statement that the Apostles suffered in the fourteenth year of Nero need not clash with Tacitus' record of the attack on mm the Christians in his tenth year. A per scontion, at first prompted by Nero's desire to attach the stigma of the great fire to the already odious sect of Christians, may have begun in an. 64 and continued with intermissions till the emperors death in a.d. 68. The accounts represent Nero's victims as suffering fearful cruelties. They were crucified, cast to wild beasts in the arena, and even smeared with pitch and burnt as living torches to light the public gardens. It is uncertain whether the persecution extended beyond Rome. N 0 other is recorded till that of Domitian. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Church History, Vol. 1: Ancient and Medieval Church History (to A. D. 1517) While the work has grown out of the author's own needs and experiences as a teacher, and is primarily intended as a text-book for theological seminaries and universities, he believes that it is equally adapted to the requirements of ministers of the gospel and of intelligent laymen throughout our great Baptist constituency. As he has conscientiously striven to record the facts as he has found them, without distorting them in the slightest degree in favor of any particular view of history, or any peculiar tenets of his denomination, he sees no reason why the work should not be acceptable and useful to members of other denominations as well as to those of his own. The recognition given to the author's fair-minded ness and freedom from partisanship by leading scholars of other denominations who have reviewed his earlier work induces the hope that this also will find a large num er of sympathetic readers in the various bodies of evangelical Christians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Manual of the Reformed Church in the United States It was found, however, that at least one publication of this order was already in existence, and upon reflection and consultation he was induced to change his plan, and to prepare a volume consisting mainly of historical sketches illustrative of the history of the Reformed Church from the days of the Reformation down to the present time. Some of these sketches were, at the time of their composition, printed in "The Guardian," a monthly magazine of which the author is editor, and though not strictly consecutive they are inserted in deference to the wishes of partial friends. In its present farm the book is intended to serve a double purpose. While it furnishes reading for the family, it also claims to be useful as a book of reference by enabling the reader to trace the career of individual ministers and the chronological order of the meetings of ecclesiastical bodies. In the preparation of Book I., which relates to the Church in Europe, the writer has by preference consulted works whose authors have been members of the Reformed Church. Among these may be mentioned: "Leben der Vater und Begrunder der Reformirten Kirche," 10 vols., Elberfeld, 1857; Max Goebel's "Geschichte des Christlichen Lebens in der rheinisch-west-phalischen evangelischen Kirche," 4 vols., Coblenz, 1849; Heppe's "Protestantismus," 2 vols., Marburg, 1852; and Cuno's "Gedachtnissbuch deutscher Fursten und Furstinnen reformirten Bekenntnisses," Barmen, 1884. The author has also frequently referred to the writings of Herzog, Ebrard, and Lange, as well as to the more usual German and English authorities on the history of the Reformation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Universal Church History, Vol. 2 of 3 The fourth and last edition Of the French translation by Goeschler and Audley, edited by Abbe Sabatier, and pub lished in 1874 - 75, is, as far as the French Revolution, based on the seventh German, and from 1789 to our own time on the eighth, which appeared respectively in 1859 and 1867. The. English translation is the only one made on the ninth and last German edition, published at Mentz in 1872, and contains, moreover, the latest additions and amendments of the author, which he was kind enough to send the translators in September last, and which include the latest historical re. Searches. The author has also promised to send others in time to be embodied in the next volume. It may be well to state here that Dr. Alzog has given this translation his fullest approbation, has generously foregone the privileges of his Oopyright, and allowed the work to be put on sale in Great Britain and Ireland.
