Book excerpt: North American Boletes is the first comprehensive guide to an extraordinary and highly prized group of mushrooms known for their beautiful colors, distinctive features, relative abundance, and edibility. The scope of this work goes beyond the identification of species. The authors consider the symbiotic relationship boletes share with higher plants and trees, their geographical distribution, and new information regarding the macrochemical test reactions of the boletes; they also describe several new species. The book’s unique combination of aesthetically appealing and scientifically accurate color photographs coupled with extensive descriptions makes it a standard reference work for bolete identification in North America. Special Features of the Book include: More than 450 color photographs illustrating more than 300 species Descriptions with accurate, updated nomenclature and a comments section that includes information on look-alike species and field observations Easy-to-follow keys constructed for both eastern and western North America that emphasize macroscopic features Nontechnical language and a glossary that make it an indispensable guide for professional as well as amateur mycologists Information on collecting, cooking, and preserving boletes

Their inherent beauty, abundance, and, for many, culinary appeal have firmly established boletes in the hearts of mushroom hunters around the world. The habitats, geographic distribution, and ecology of boletes—including the intriguing relationships they have with trees and shrubs—only add to their interest. Boletes of Eastern North America offers readers a comprehensive field guide, including extensive descriptions and more than 350 rich color photographs. Each species listing includes the most recent scientific name with existing synonyms; common names when applicable; and an overview that includes field impressions, similar species, and detailed information about habitat, fruiting frequency, and geographic distribution. Because boletes are one of the most sought-after wild mushrooms, the authors have also included a section with information on collecting, cooking, and preserving them. Advanced students and professional mycologists, as well as amateur mushroom hunters, will find this field guide an indispensable resource.

In addition to providing fresh insights into various topics, e.g. taxonomy, ecology, cultivation and environmental impact, it also demonstrates the clear but fragile link between wild edible mushrooms and human societies. Comprising 17 chapters written by 41 experts from 13 countries on four continents, it enables readers to grasp the importance of protecting this unique, invaluable, renewable resource in the context of climate change and unprecedented biodiversity loss. The book inspires professionals and encourages young researchers to enter this field to develop the sustainable use of wild edible mushrooms using modern tools and approaches. It also highlights the importance of protecting forested environments, saving species from extinction and generating a significant income for local populations, while keeping alive and renewing the link between humans and wild edible mushrooms so that in the future, the sustainable farming and use of edible mycorrhizal mushrooms will play a predominant role in the management and preservation of forested lands.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some parts of the world mushrooms have had a central role in religious ritual ceremonies. Ethnomycological studies among the Indian tribes of Mexico - the Aztecs and the Chichimecas - revealed the mushrooms to be hallucinogenic. Chemists from a leading Pharmaceutical company took over, isolated and described the mushroom alkaloid psilocybin, that upon dephosphorylation after collection of the mushroom or in the human body, form psilocin that is the active hallucinogenic compound. For a long time psilocybin/psilocin was expected to become a constituent of psychedelic drugs useful for treatment of specific psychoses. As the effect of psilocybin/psilocin resembles that of LSD the isolated compound, as well as mushrooms containing the compound, became popular among recreational users of hallucinogenic drugs in Western America, and from there the habit of using these mushrooms have spread around the world. Psilocybin/psilocin is legally prohibited in many countries which usually treat the compound as a narcotic drug. Some countries also prohibit the use of some or all psilocybin-containing mushrooms. In this respect, the legal situation differs between Nordic countries. Although psilocybin-containing mushrooms are not what Nordic mushroom pickers are trying to find as food or food supplement, there is a risk, admittedly small, that these mushrooms accidentally will be collected. At the present situation, this may be a legal problem in some Nordic countries. This document aims at identifying when this might be the case without going into legal interpretations.
