Book excerpt: A Load Of Bull is the true story of an Englishman finding his way in one of the most perplexing, anarchic and exuberant cities on earth: Madrid. In the late 80's Tim Parfitt blagged his way into a job at Condé Nast in London and, from there, into a six week stint in Madrid to help launch Spanish Vogue. Six weeks turned into nine years, and helping out turned into running the company. Tim Parfitt never saw a Costa and he certainly never bought an olive grove. Instead, he discovered a booming city in hedonistic reaction to years of facism, where sleep was something you only did at work. Tim Parfitt's rise from unwanted guest to paparazzi pursued mover in Spain's glamorous social scene is a hilarious comedy of errors. 'Hugely entertaining memoir ... frequently laugh-out-loud funny' Daily Express 'A love letter to Madrid ... brilliantly captures a truly eccentric and hedonistic place' Daily Mirror 'Parfitt's light touch and neat line in self-deprecating humour perfectly suits this entertaining urban spin on the old tale of Brits having fun under the Spanish sun' Sunday Times 'Vivid yet affectionate ... fascinating, escapist stuff' OK! Magazine 'Will do for Madrid what 'Driving over Lemons' has done for Andalucia.' Spain Magazine

But Juan is never far from Manolo's consciousness--how could he be, with the entire town of Arcangel waiting for the day Manolo will fulfill his father's legacy? But Manolo has a secret he dares to share with no one--he is a coward, without afición, the love of the sport that enables a bullfighter to rise above his fear and face a raging bull. As the day when he must enter the ring approaches, Manolo finds himself questioning which requires more courage: to follow in his father's legendary footsteps or to pursue his own destiny?

Book excerpt: The day had finally arrived... I intentionally woke up early, because I had still a number of things to do. I had to pack the remaining items of clothing and various household items, which I had accumulated after I moved out of the family home. The reason for me taking such drastic measures, was due to the fall-out of my pending court hearing. I moved into a crappy little bedsit in Stoke Poges. (Near Slough). I finished off gathering up those last articles and loaded them into my car; then to be transported to my lock-up in Maidenhead. I had to be at Reading Crown Court for 10.30 am... My plan; was to store the last of my stuff in a rented garage, then drive over to an industrial estate in Langley (near Slough). There I would park my car, then walk around the corner to the railway station. From there, I would catch the 09.25 to Reading.I knew that the Court was only a few minutes' walk from Reading railway station, so it would make sense to leave my car somewhere safe in Langley, then travel by rail to Reading for my court appearance. I had waited nearly a year for this day to arrive, having been to the Maidenhead Magistrates Court twice to have my offences referred to Crown. I wasn't going to bother with any kind of legal representation, after all, I was guilty as hell, and the authorities had me banged to rights! I was ex-army, and knew that when one was caught doing something wrong, one held up ones hands and accepted the consequences, and the punishment without question.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Amanda King grew up in Brisbane, Australia, and like so many young Australasians before her, she eventually headed off on her OE. On her travels, she met a Kiwi farmer, and ended up living on a farm in Canterbury, New Zealand, and falling head-over-heels in love with country life as well as the farmer! Photography started off as a favourite hobby -a way to capture unique split-second scenes and make them last a lifetime. Her business really began when she decided to create a large wall print for her own living room. An opportunity arose to photograph a stunning highland cow. The resulting animal print became the focal point of the room and friends started requesting similar pieces. This inspired her to head out and take photos of other rural animals. That led to a 'hobby' Facebook page. Unexpectedly, and very quickly, people started to respond to the images. Before too long, and much to her delight, Amanda found herself with a full-time business on her hands. In this book she has collected her favourite prints and arranged them by breed: Angus; Belted Galloway; Bison; Brahman; Charolais; Friesian; Hereford; Highland; Jersey; Limousin; Murray Grey; Red Devon; Shorthorn; Speckle Park; Texas Longhorn; Wagyu; White Galloway; and Zebu. Amanda also tells brief stories of some of these animals, their personalities, and how the shoot day went"--Publisher information.

Book excerpt: A true classic with a timeless message! All the other bulls run, jump, and butt their heads together in fights. Ferdinand, on the other hand, would rather sit and smell the flowers. So what will happen when Ferdinand is picked for the bullfights in Madrid? The Story of Ferdinand has inspired, enchanted, and provoked readers ever since it was first published in 1936 for its message of nonviolence and pacifism. In WWII times, Adolf Hitler ordered the book burned in Nazi Germany, while Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, granted it privileged status as the only non-communist children's book allowed in Poland. The preeminent leader of Indian nationalism and civil rights, Mahatma Gandhi—whose nonviolent and pacifistic practices went on to inspire Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.—even called it his favorite book. The story was adapted by Walt Disney into a short animated film entitled Ferdinand the Bull in 1938. Ferdinand the Bull won the 1938 Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons).

Book excerpt: Much like Lin-Manuel Miranda did in Hamilton, the New York Times best-selling author David Elliott turns a classic on its head in form and approach, updating the timeless story of Theseus and the Minotaur. A rough, rowdy, and darkly comedic young adult retelling in verse, which NPR called “beautifully clever,” Bull will have readers reevaluating one of mythology's most infamous monsters. SEE THE STORY OF THESEUS AND THE MINOTAUR IN A WHOLE NEW LIGHT Minos thought he could Pull a fast one On me, Poseidon! God of the Sea! But I’m the last one On whom you Should try such a thing. The nerve of that guy. The balls. The audacity. I AM THE OCEAN! I got capacity! Depths! Darkness! Delphic power! So his sweet little plan Went big-time sour And his wife had a son Born with horns and a muzzle Who ended up In an underground puzzle. What is it with you mortals? You just can’t seem to learn: If you play with fire, babies, You’re gonna get burned.

Book excerpt: In politics, everyone lies. Voters distrust everything they are told by politicians, the media and even their neighbors. Despite universal suspicion of news and opinion makers, very few people understand how political lies are created and thus most folk are unable to dissect spin and discover truth. Shooting the Bull details how all political falsehoods are created, why they work and how to detect them. Nowhere on the political landscape are more lies told than within the churning bowels of the gun control industry. Fighting America's revolutionary reluctance to submit and the public’s continuing fear of criminals not currently incarcerated in Congress, voters have resisted legislative agendas proposed by The Brady Campaign, Violence Policy Center and the Clinton administration. For decades significant victories have eluded their ilk, leaving only one strategy with which to sway voters – lying.Shooting the Bull serves two purposes. First, it catalogs the common canards of politicians and activists. Readers will recognize how they have been psychologically scammed by special interests and deceived by elected sycophants. They will also experience disquieting revelations as they discover forms of fibs they had previously encountered but not recognized. By the end of the book, readers will be infinitely more cynical about politicians and propagandists and be equipped to dissect future electoral effluvium. The second purpose of Shooting the Bull is to document the deceits peddled by the gun control lobby. Each chapter is devoted to at least one major initiative proffered by anti-gun activists, exposing their falsities through dissection of their motives, methods and inconvenient facts. The art and science of political pretense is illustrated through Senator Dianne Feinstein's "assault weapon" ban, the Million Mom March's campaign to register all guns and license all owners, Michael Moore's deluded “documentaries”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestseller Featured on The Daily Show and 60 Minutes The acclaimed book that illuminates our world and its politics by revealing why bullshit is more dangerous than lying One of the most prominent features of our world is that there is so much bullshit. Yet we have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, how it’s distinct from lying, what functions it serves, and what it means. In his acclaimed bestseller On Bullshit, Harry Frankfurt, who was one of the world’s most influential moral philosophers, explores this important subject, which has become a central problem of politics and our world. With his characteristic combination of philosophical acuity, psychological insight, and wry humor, Frankfurt argues that bullshitters misrepresent themselves to their audience not as liars do, that is, by deliberately making false claims about what is true. Rather, bullshitters seek to convey a certain impression of themselves without being concerned about whether anything at all is true. They quietly change the rules governing their end of the conversation so that claims about truth and falsity are irrelevant. Although bullshit can take many innocent forms, excessive indulgence in it can eventually undermine the bullshitter’s capacity to tell the truth in a way that lying does not. Liars at least acknowledge that the truth matters. Because of this, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are. Remarkably prescient and insightful, On Bullshit is a small book that explains a great deal about our time.
