Book excerpt: With the destruction of the Maine and other events leading to the Spanish–American War, Theodore Roosevelt resigned as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in order to go to the front. Under Colonel Leonard Wood, Roosevelt raised and trained the First United States Volunteer Cavalry, who were quickly nicknamed the “Rough Riders.” The regiment received a surplus of volunteers, with a mix of recruits ranging from Southwestern cowboys to Ivy League scholars. Logistical difficulties challenged the regiment almost immediately in their transit to Cuba. Before sailing from Tampa, they were forced to leave behind four of the twelve total companies and almost all of their horses. As an officer, Roosevelt kept his horse, which he rode to lead the charge in the Battle of San Juan Hill. Roosevelt recalled the battle as “the great day of my life” and “my crowded hour.” After winning the war, the onset of yellow fever, malaria, and other incapacitating diseases made it imperative to return the soldiers home quickly. Along with nine generals, Roosevelt drafted and signed a “round robin” letter, which was also published nationwide to turn public attention toward returning the troops. Back home, Roosevelt initially published the work serially in Scribner’s Magazine in 1899, and its popularity contributed to his rise as a national figure. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: After just four weeks of training, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders--a regiment of cowboys recruited into the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry--fought in Cuba during the Spanish-American War with the skill of seasoned regulars. The unit reflected the future president's character as a wealthy Ivy Leaguer who went west to experience frontier life. Most of the Rough Riders were seasoned cowhands from the Southwest, but Ivy League athletes, sons of millionaires and lawmen filled out the ranks. Roosevelt molded this diverse group into a cohesive, efficient fighting force and led them to victory on San Juan Hill. Told from the perspective of the men in the regiment, this book traces the history of the Rough Riders from conception to disbanding, and Roosevelt's transformation into an American hero.

Book excerpt: Rough Rider is a snapshot study of the significant career of President Theodore Roosevelt. Partly biographical sketch and partly analysis, the book provides an overview of his actions, ideals, and written works, highlighting important events from Roosevelt’s early public life, his presidency, and later career. David Key sees Roosevelt as a statesman who well understood how to create his own popular image, but equally important was Roosevelt’s place as one of the foremost historians of his time, a man who understood the traditional criteria for greatness and did not hesitate to shape his own legacy. Written especially for college students, Rough Rider examines pertinent primary sources and critical analyses of other historians to aid in understanding the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt.

Book excerpt: She's a little bit country, and he's...not. Arizona businessman and long-lost McKay love child Gavin Daniels has been awarded sole custody of his teenage daughter, Sierra. In order to steer her back on track after a brush with the law, he heads to Wyoming...even if he isn't sure where they fit in the McKay dynamic. But he's thrown for a loop when his new housemate, Rielle, is a whole lot sexier than he remembered. Rielle Wetzler has finally overcome the stigma of having hippie parents and being a young single mother. But now Gavin is in Sundance to claim the house that's rightfully his. Rielle knew this day would come, but she isn't prepared to leave the home she built for herself. And to further complicate matters, her long-dormant libido is definitely not ready to live with this newly buff Gavin--who has the take-charge attitude to prove he's all McKay. Sharing a roof is too much temptation, and before long, Gavin and Rielle are sharing a bed. But are they ready to share their hearts, lives and families forever? Warning: Contains a feisty, independent heroine who doesn't need a man to take care of her needs outside the bedroom and a sweet, sexy and bossy hero who's up to the challenge of proving her wrong

Book excerpt: House of Winslow Book 18- Stepping off the train at New York's Grand Central Station, Aaron Winslow left the numbing cold of the Klondike gold fields far behind. But he could not shake the bitter sting left by the death of his cousin, Jubal Winslow, who had died to save Aaron's life. No words had been able to touch the guilt and disillusionment he carried. When Aaron arrives in New York City, he finds his younger brother, Lewis, passionately determined to enlist in Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders and fight the Spanish in Cuba. Unable to stop Lewis, Aaron decides to join him and try to protect him. He's also considering the high-powered offer of going in as a war reporter for William Randolph Hearst and the New York Journal. For reasons all her own, Gail Summers is also volunteering as an army nurse to serve at the side of Dr. David Burns, a man to whom she is greatly indebted. But will her friendship with the godly physician stand in the way of what she eventually comes to feel about Aaron? Could something good come out of this war?
