Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Journey to China and JapanThe Chinese proudly boast that their government is the oldest on the globe; that China was a nation five thousand years before the United States was born; that they have books from three to four thousand years old; that they used the printing -press a thousand years before it was used in Europe. More than four thousand years ago these pe0p1e knew how to make brick from clay, how to build canals, how to sing, and play on musical instruments, how to write, and how to calculate the movements of the stars; also, they had domestic animals, cultivated the fields, and had forms of worship and government. They know little of modern inventions and ma chinery, but they have a wonderful skill in handicraft, and their artists and artisans are in many lines not equaled by those of any other country. They tell us, also, that their race numbers more than one-fourth of all the people on the globe, and that their territory includes more than acres of ground, or more than the United States.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Called at my office one day and, drawing me aside, said that he wanted me to go to China for him, to represent him in certain business matters in which he was interested; He thought that the trip would take about five months; told me that I would have one or two travelling companions, and that the rest of the party would sail from_ New York, via Suez, and join us at Shanghai. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Travels in China, Japan and Java, 1903 From the standpoint of the traveller, Japan is perhaps one of the most interesting countries in the world; the country itself is full of delightful and varied scenery, while its people possess a charm of appearance and manner unlike anything of the kind to be met with elsewhere. Parts of China and Java were also visited by me but of the people of those countries I have little to say in praise. The Chinese appear to be indifferent to the course of present events they seem to possess no national ideals, and I was much struck by the obvious individual selfishness of the people, among whom patriotism and public spirit had no existence. The Javanese are absolutely apathetic a display of energy on their part seems an impossibility. Both countries are, however, interesting and well worth a visit. There are few railroads; the boats, Ou the rivers and canals are not very attractive to Americans and Euro peans; camels are not pleasant riding to strangers; the sedan-chair and the wheelbarrows cramp one too much for Comfort; and the roads are so miserable and crooked that walking is both unpleasant and dangerous, for a Chinaman wants the roads ffom one village to another to wind about SO much that an evil spirit wandering in them will likely get lost and not find the way to the Chinaman's house. Both the officials and the common people fought the introduction of railroads into China. This opposition was due partly to the fear that it would open the way for missionaries and other foreigners to get in easily, and partly to the fear that it would anger evil Spirits and cause them to bring great misfortunes On the peo ple. So great was the opposition to' railroads twenty five years ago that, even after a Short one had been built from Shanghai to Wusung, the authorities bought it and destroyed it. Except a few Dutch and Chinese, who were kept almost like prisoners at Nagasaki, no foreigners have been allowed to reside or trade in the country since about the year 1636. A great and unexpected change has now taken place; Japan has not only Opened some of her ports to foreign trade, but has also sent her Ambassadors to visit many of the principal Courts of Europe and America. Excerpt: ...he goes in the spring to pray for a favorable season, and then to set the plows of China going, by himself starting a little furrow with a goldhandled plow. In Peking are the National University; the ancient Observatory; the Imperial Palace, with its beautiful gardens, and their quaint Camel's Back Bridge; and noted Buddhist temples, with fine architecture, extensive grounds, elegant furniture, and giant images of Buddha, with smaller images of saints in the lesser halls. And yet the streets of the city are abominable, being in bad condition, dirty, foul smelling, and having manure heaps or pools of stagnant water on every hand. At night anyone who is unwise enough to risk himself abroad must carry a lantern, for the only lights are dim street lamps of latticework boxes on poles about six feet high. In these are candles! We drop into the marketplaces to see what is for sale. There are many varieties of fish; the choicest of fruits in abundance, including oranges, loquats, citrons, rose-apples, bananas, litchis (lee'chees), papayas, and grapes; mutton, kid, pork, deer, dogs, squirrels, quails, pheasants, chickens, ducks, rats, and grasshoppers; and squashes, edible bamboo, melons, water coltrops, rice, beans, peas, taro, peanuts, sweet potatoes, and yams. We pass stores selling tinsel paper, plain or in various shapes, to be burned in religious ceremonies, in honor of ancestors, or at funerals; bird stores and bird-pedlers selling warblers and pigeons; bookstores selling great heavy volumes that few persons read, but which the rich purchase for their libraries; and drug stores that sell pounded tiger bones to give strength, and extracts of dogs and cats, or mixtures of various bugs and plants as cures for disease. THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA...

Trawick, of Nashville, Tennessee. They left immediately for San Francisco, from which place they sailed for their new home in China. Doctor Trawick is an associate surgeon in the Methodist Hospital at Soochow. Her letters from this far-off Eastern land were so very inter esting that many friends requested that they be given to the public, and some of them were accordingly published in a leading newspaper of Louisville, her native city. Many complimentary things were said of them, and many requests were made that they be put in a more permanent form. Some few of these are printed as an appendix to this book.' It is in response to these requests that this little volume appears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From the window of our room the hay is a beautiful sight; dotted all over with sails, and sampans, now and then a large junk. Which with its large single oblong sail looks very odd to one not accustomed to see such water craft as these. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Round the World: Letters From Japan, China, India, and Egypt I was not ordered abroad by the doctors, but started in perfect health, which I retained through all the vicissitudes of climate, and was so fortunate as not to meet with any serious mishap to mar the pleasure of the journey. Only once, during that eventful night of the typhoon on the Chinese coast, did I question my prudence in being there, without the excuse of ill-health or busi ness. My motive was not merely the pursuit of pleasure, but the desire to gratify a long-cherished passion to see once in my lifetime the strange and curious nations of the Orient, books of travel among whom have always had for me a strange fascination. In these sketches I have confined my descriptions, in a great measure, to what passed under my own observation; and have endeavored to paint the curious and novel scenes in Japan, China, and India, as they appeared to a fresh traveler, without any attempt at fine writing, or high- own description. The unexpected courtesy and kindness everywhere met from both foreigners and natives, and the many chance acquaintances which have ripened into friendships that will endure for a lifetime, are among the pleasantest souvenirs of my journey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westward to the Far East: A Guide to the Principal Cities of China and Japan Westward to the Far East is intended to supply general informa tion in a concise form to those who may be desirous of visiting Japan and China, as well as to serve as a guide to those visiting those portions of the Orient by the Canadian Pacific Route. It is not an elaborately descriptive work, nor is it a mere bald statement of times, distances and measurements. It indicates the chief points of beauty and interest along the route and in Japan and China, dealing at sufficient length with each subject to satisfy the casual observer, and referring those who desire more detailed information to the several sources from which it may be obtained. It is intended to tell the possible traveler what there is to be seen and the actual traveler how to see it. It should be, if its author's good intention is fulfilled, interesting to the one and useful to the other. It is the result of personal observation and enquiry prompted by the desire to acquire the knowledge most useful to a tour ist, and while being a trustworthy guide to those traveling in the coun tries referred to, will teach others a great deal about China and Japan which they cannot fail to be interested in knowing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across America and Asia: Notes of a Five Years Journey Around the World Extensive travel in the interior of Japan and China under com mission from the native governments, and the long journey from China over the table land of Central Asia, and through Siberia to Europe, brought me face to face with the inhabitants of these interesting countries, and with the influences which Nature has used in moulding them to their present forms. I have tried to present in a continued series of sketches these important regions, which are being brought, by the reaction of the spirit of the age upon their natural capacities, into the circle of interdependent nations. The incidents and adventures of an eventful journey are used freely, as forming some of the best illustrations of the social con dition of the races in the midst of which they occurred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from As We Were Journeying: The Hawaiian Islands, Japan, China, Siam, Java and India, as Seen From a Girl's Point of View We are but a little way on our journey, and are glad enough to be off the train. It seems so long ago since we left you all standing on the station's platform, and yet it is only four days. We had a very comfortable journey across the continent, however. Friday we reached Omaha and had a rest of a few hours there, taking the train again in the afternoon. Away we ow across the farming lands, every thing as at as could be. It was very warm and dusty. Saturday saw us in a terrible blizzard, with the thermometer at zero in the car; it was decidedly unpleasant. When we Opened our eyes Sunday morning the bright sunshine greeted us so cheerily, and off to the left sparkled beautiful Salt Lake, encircled by the sunny mountain-s. It was a very lovely picture. All day we rode through barren country, with nothing but the blue-gray sage brush to relieve the monotony of the mountains, with here and there a patch of snow. This morning we were in the rich country sloping down from the mountains to the Pacific, and everything looked so beautifully fertile and well kept. The ride into the city was lovely, as we Skirted the water's edge for quite a long distance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
