Col lections, for one reason or another, have been dispersed; death and the division of great estates have scattered galleries and furnished opportunities to secure masterpieces for centuries the proud possessions of royalty, nobility, or the Croesus of his time. Attracted early to these canvases, buying at a time even when there was little market, we have established not only unusual and exclusive relations with English and foreign agents for the securing of these works, but we make bold to lay claim to an expert knowledge of the men, their methods and characteristics, that has enabled us to select intelligently and authoritatively canvases that worthily represent their talent and best efforts. For several years we have dealt almost exclusively in such works, and our importations of recent years have included some of the most important examples of the older masters, and in particular the early Englishmen, from Sir Joshua through all his contemporaries and followers, that have ever been brought to this country. These canvases we have placed in the galleries of many of the greatest collectors in America, where they remain among their most prized possessions. In offering this catalogue, which covers, of course, only a minor portion of the paintings in the gallery, and which is the second of a series whereof the first was received with much favor, it is announced that many of the works included since the catalogue was com menced have passed from our possession. Maas excels in clear and brilliant colour ing: he is fond too of strong contrasts, sudden gleams of light amid thick dark ness. He never equalled Teniers in his soft, sharp, brilliant touches, nor Jan Steen in his management of light and shadow; but he acquired a name which will be long heard of for vivid presentations of nature, for simplicity of concep tion, and a quiet sly humour. Holland is full of the pictures of her own masters: they are to be found in almost every house. I have only to add, says Sir Joshua, that in my account of the Dutch pictures, which is, indeed, little more than-a catalogue, I have mentioned only those which I considered worthy of attention. It is not to be supposed that these are the whole of the cabinets described; perhaps in a collection of near a hundred pictures, not ten are set down; their being mentioned at all, though no epithet may be added, implies excellence. It is plain from this, that the president considered only such pic tures as he thought excellent worthy of attention; but there are many fine works which approach near excellence, and the Dutch galleries number some from the'hand of Arnold Van Maas among them. It was Lady Archibald Camp bell, one oi the most beautiful women in England. In this portrait she lived in all her charm, with her fragile figure, her blond hair, her aristocratic hands and deep eyes. Or, in better words, the likeness gave the essence of her haughty and distinguished beauty, what remains of a figure when the artist has eliminated from his impression everything which is not in the highest degree refined and exquisite. In the face of this sylph-like being as she floated away into the picture there was an expression of slight contempt, as if this beautiful woman had pity on all the plain crowd in the exhibition whom she would have to contemplate, or all the unfortunate, badly painted portraits hanging around. The whole figure stood out in grey against a black back ground, being only enlivened in a soft way by delicate greyish-blue and brownish-grey tones, with a little blond colour and a little rose-colour. Never theless the picture was full of air, a strangely soft harmonious air. It was felt that the model was living, walking, and moving.
