Return with us now to those thrilling, pre-Internet days when an aspiring writer could “earn while you learn.” Mort Castle’s apprenticeship was spent writing for men’s magazines, like Dude, Gent, Mr. and Nugget, confessions magazines, True Secrets, Intimate Story, Modern Romances, and little literary magazines, including Samisdat, Abbey, and The Gar. A Little Cobalt Book of Old Blue Stories ... and Stuff presents works which might otherwise be found only on the disintegrating pages of 1970s publications. Castle says these works taught him, “to write the well-made story: beginning, middle, end. They taught me I could be funny in print. And they gave me the confidence that comes from knowing people would pay for my work.” Stories included in this collection: An Apprenticeship Angels and Apes The Woman Who Made Me a Man Again What's Your Bq? Book excerpt: Cobalt Blue is a tale of rapturous love and fierce heartbreak told with tenderness and unsparing clarity. Brother and sister Tanay and Anuja both fall in love with the same man, an artist lodging in their family home in Pune, in western India. He seems like the perfect tenant, ready with the rent and happy to listen to their mother’s musings on the imminent collapse of Indian culture. But he’s also a man of mystery. He has no last name. He has no family, no friends, no history, and no plans for the future. When he runs away with Anuja, he overturns the family’s lives. Translated from Marathi by acclaimed novelist and critic Jerry Pinto, Sachin Kundalkar’s elegantly wrought and exquisitely spare novel explores the disruption of a traditional family by a free-spirited stranger to examine a generation in transition. Intimate, moving, sensual, and wry in its portrait of young love, Cobalt Blue is a frank and lyrical exploration of gay life in India that recalls the work of Edmund White and Alan Hollinghurst—of people living in emotional isolation, attempting to find long-term intimacy in relationships that until recently were barely conceivable to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editorial Reviews 2021-12-14 A teenage crush gets interrupted by a horrible murder in this debut YA novel. It’s the summer of 1962. Eighteen-year-old Paul Dawson just needs to make it through his senior year of high school and then he can leave suburban Caroline Hills in upstate New York behind to become a writer. Until then, he’s stuck lying in his bedroom, playing Roy Orbison songs over and over, and daydreaming about what it would be like to have a girlfriend. His handsome twin brother, Bobby, doesn’t have that problem. He’s the star quarterback; he’s dating the head cheerleader; and he’s also seeing Betty Jo Randall on the side. Then, one day, the perfect girl for Paul appears out of the blue and moves in right next door. “In another life, she must have been a mermaid,” thinks Paul, spying on her over the fence. “Someone that lovely can’t be just anybody. The sky gave her his grey blue eyes. Her rippling red hair cascades down her back like a waterfall. The wind loves her hair. I have never seen a girl let the wind have a way with her hair if she could help it before.” Jenny Winters has just moved in with her grandmother in Caroline Hills after her mother—with whom she’s never had a great relationship—kicked her out of the house for reasons the young woman would prefer not to talk about. Paul will do anything to hang out with Jenny, and she will do anything to stir up some trouble, which is how the two end up breaking into the lake house of the local doctor on the Fourth of July. The same day, Betty Jo is raped and killed—and Bobby is the obvious suspect. But Paul and Jenny think they may have seen the actual murderer, though they’ll need proof if anyone is going to believe them. Can the two outsiders crack the case open and save the town from a killer? And can Paul figure out a way to win the heart of his emotionally unavailable crush? Williams’ prose is lively and smooth. While many of the characters feel like types, she imbues them with energy and humor that make them fresh. The narration shifts between Paul and Jenny, who are both delightfully angst-y, albeit in different ways. Here, Paul panics when Jenny instigates some spontaneous skinny-dipping at the lake: “I empty my pockets. I throw out my wallet, my pocket knife, my admission tickets to the fair, and some folded pieces of paper. I take off my socks and shoes….I pull off my belt so slowly. I don’t know what to do. What would Bobby do? Oh, hell. He’d already be in the lake now.” The characterization, especially the richness of the protagonists’ inner lives, helps the novel to feel bigger than its mystery plot. The author manages to capture the promise and danger of being young, particularly the dynamic of a teenage relationship where one person has lived a lot more life than the other. Readers will look forward to Williams’ future offerings. An immersive, bracing mystery with a big heart. Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three love stories, a magical setting—welcome to the village of Lochalshie! This trio of laugh-out-loud romantic comedies set in the Scottish Highlands features the stories of Gaby and Jack, and Katya. When Gaby flees a broken engagement, she takes refuge in a faraway village in the north-west of Scotland. Then fate puts a red-headed man with more than a passing resemblance to her favourite fictional hunk Jamie Fraser in front of her, and sparks fly in Highland Fling. In Highland Heart, Katya’s relationship started promisingly… an-easy-on-the-eye guy who ticks all her boxes for brains and beauty. But their long-distance liaison takes its toll and when there is a charmer who doesn’t bother to hide his attraction to her close by, who will Katya choose? Weddings… three months to organise one and helpful ‘friends’ throwing in their ideas and suggestions left, right and centre. Will our happy couple get their happily ever after in Highland Wedding? If you are a fan of Jill Mansell, Jenny Colgan, Trisha Ashley, Katie Fforde and Sophie Kinsella, the Highland Books trio is your perfect choice for curling up on the couch and losing yourself in the world of Lochalshie. Praise for Highland Fling: “It's a great mix of funny moments and that 'does he like me' awkwardness. This book is full of witty dialogue, quirky characters you just know you'd recognise if you met them, and scenery that comes to life, making you want to hop in your car and go there.” “Took only 4 nights to devour this book, and I loved every page. The story and characters were very credible, in that the lead man is somebody I wouldn’t mind the “love guru” setting me up with. A great funny romantic read, ideal for holidays or a rainy day in.” “I loved this book. It's a perfect cosy read. I loved the Scottish setting, with all of the colourful and funny characters.” Reviews of Highland Heart: “Loved the second instalment of this delightful Scottish drama. Highly recommend both books for an instant Highland getaway.” “An excellent, heart-warming rom-com with all of the funniest characters from the first plus some great new ones. I loved seeing Lochhalsie from Katya's point of view this time. Funny, sweet and romantic.” “Great storytelling with characters I really warmed to. I so wanted Katya to be all loved up that I couldn’t put it down until I found out who’d she chosen. And the banter between the villagers was classic.”

Book excerpt: Glass containing cobalt has been discovered from the Babylonian-Assyrian period, the Mycenaean era, and the Roman Empire. Commercially, cobalt was not used as a glass colorant until the late 1800s. Small quantities of cobalt were produced by American glass companies from the late 1800s to the mid-1920s. Most of the American cobalt glass in this book is from the mid-1920s to World War II. Several companies including the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company, the L.E. Smith Glass Company, and the MacBeth-Evans Glass Company produced machine-molded cobalt glass during the 1930s that can be considered true Depression glass. Many of the major glass companies are covered in this book: Cambridge, Central Glass, Duncan & Miller, Fostoria Glass, Hazel Atlas, A.H. Heisey, Imperial, Paden City, Westmoreland, and many more. There are over 800 color photos. Items shown include candlesticks, bowls, compotes, cake stands, trays and platters, glasses, pitchers, and perfumes. 2009 values.
