Book excerpt: Letter book containing copies of correspondence of merchant Elias Smith (1736-1820), of Montréal, Québec, dated 1799-1800. The volume includes letters to his eldest son and business partner, David Smith, in New York City, as well as merchants in Liverpool and London, England, concerning shipment of cargo and prices current. Elias Smith exported fish and imported rum, crockery, Irish linen, Russian sheeting, German scythes, and looking glasses. Other topics include a condemned American ship he possessed, the Catharine, and ensuring she was not reclaimed by her owners, and his grist mill at Hope Mills (now Port Hope), Ontario, where he manufactured flour that he sold in Canada. Elias Smith also referred to an English law that had been passed restricting the slave trade; and a citizens' petition he co-signed in April 1800 to the Assembly of Lower Canada requesting clarification of masters' rights after one of his slaves escaped. The volume contains some correspondence and copies of public notices from the 1830s and 1840s written by James Fox, the husband of Elias Smith's granddaughter, Catharine. Tipped in to the front of the book is a letter to Baker Library from the donor, E.A.S. Clarke, a descendant of Elias Smith.

Book excerpt: History of Joseph Smith, the Prophet and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a semi-official history of the early Latter Day Saint movement during the lifetime of founder Joseph Smith. It is largely composed of Smith's writings and interpretations and editorial comments by Smith's secretaries, scribes, and after Smith's death, historians of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The history was written between 1839 and 1856. It was later published in its entirety with extensive annotations and edits by B. H. Roberts as History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first six volumes of this work cover the "History of Joseph Smith" from his birth in 1805 to his death in 1844. Volume seven covers the material from immediately after Smith's death in June 1844 until the church's first general conference in Salt Lake City. Volume 1: 1805 – December 1833 Volume 2: January 1834 – December 1837 Volume 3: January 1838 – July 1839 Volume 4: July 1839 – May 1842 Volume 5: May 1842 – August 1843 Volume 6: September 1843 – June 1844 Volume 7: June 1844 – October 1848

This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 2832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Smith's monumental work, 'History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,' is a comprehensive seven-volume series that delves into the origins and early history of the Mormon religion. Written in a straightforward and chronological style, the book provides a detailed account of the key events, revelations, and challenges faced by the early leaders of the Church. Smith's writing is marked by his deep religious faith and his desire to document the history of his faith community for future generations. The book not only serves as a primary source for Mormon history but also sheds light on the religious and social context of 19th-century America. Each volume is filled with primary sources, personal accounts, and doctrinal teachings, making it a valuable resource for scholars of American religious history. Joseph Smith, as the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, wrote this comprehensive history to provide a record of the divine guidance and challenges faced by the early leaders of the Church. Smith's personal experiences, religious vision, and dedication to his faith are evident in the meticulous detail and spiritual insights found throughout the series. Written with a sense of mission and purpose, 'History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' stands as a testament to Smith's belief in the importance of recording and preserving the history of his religious community. I highly recommend this seven-volume edition to readers interested in Mormon history, American religious movements, and the foundational texts of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
