Widely acclaimed as an actor, he went on to become a shrewd theatre manager at Drury Lane. His years in charge of the Theatre Royal ensured its dramatic ascendancy and burnished his own considerable celebrity. These letters, first published in 1831, reveal Garrick's gregarious nature and shed light on his many friendships with leading ladies, fellow actors, contemporary playwrights, and members of high society. His love of Shakespeare's work is also evident, highlighting Garrick's pivotal role in ensuring the plays became established in the national consciousness. This two-volume collection was edited by James Boaden (1762-1839), who published several theatrical biographies (also reissued in this series). Containing correspondence for the period 1736-74, Volume 1 also includes a biographical account that traces the progress of Garrick's theatrical career.

Book excerpt: What happens when an actor owns shares in the stage on which he performs and the newspapers that review his performances? Celebrity that lasts over 240 years. From 1741, David Garrick dominated the London theatre world as the progenitor of a new 'natural' style of acting. From 1747 to 1776, he was a part-owner and manager of Drury Lane, controlling most aspects of the theatre's life. In a spectacular foreshadowing of today's media convergences, he also owned shares in papers including the St James's Chronicle and the Public Advertiser, which advertised and reviewed Drury Lane's theatrical productions. This book explores the nearly inconceivable level of cultural power generated by Garrick's entrepreneurial manufacture and mediation of his own celebrity. Using new technologies and extensive archival research, this book uncovers fresh material concerning Garrick's ownership and manipulation of the media, offering timely reflections for theatre history and media studies.

Book excerpt: The life of this actor, manager, playwright, and eighteenth-century gentleman is here refracted through the volurninous correspondence and analyses of roles, plays, and performances in this, no doubt final, biography of David Garrick. As the direct result of modern scholarship accessible only since the 1960s, it is now possible to appraise fully the life of this remarkable person who was born in Lichfield 19February 1717, a childhood friend of Samuel Johnson, who became the greatest English theatrical luminary who ever lived, and who when he died 20 January 1779was mourned by the nation and eulogized by Dr. Johnson as one whose death "eclipsed the gaiety of nations." For twenty-nine years (1747-1776) Garrick managed Drury Lane theatre, caring passionately for its well-being. His own acting set the pace for the performances, his discipline carried it on, and his theatrical innovations attracted the audiences on which the lives, hopes, and families of some 140actors, actresses, singers, dancers, and others depended. In addition, he wrote, adapted, or altered some 49 plays and wrote nearly 100 prologues. What emerges from this big, new critical biography is a fully drawn portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman, with a wide range of acquaintances, elegant socially, morally, and personally, and an engaging conversationalist with and respecter of women of mark and with his closest friends. He was also, as the evidence now shows, the solid link with his own age and the great dramatic artists of the past, from the Restoration playwrights to Massinger, Jonson, Shakespeare, and early English dramatists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Garrick's accomplishments as an actor, manager, and theatrical innovator brought him great fame and fortune, and his ideas influenced not only his own age but succeeding ages as well. Yet as a playwright, a part of the elegant combination of talents that was David Garrick, he has never achieved the critical reputation he richly deserves, in main because of the unavailability of texts and the lack of proper assessment of the historic importance of his plays in the English theatre. This first complete edition makes available to scholars and students all the plays of Garrick in well edited texts, with commentary and notes. The two volumes of Garrick's own plays published together here include the twenty-two plays of the Garrick canon attributable to him. Garrick's claim to serious consideration as a playwright rests upon these plays, written between 1740 and 1775.They are not all masterpieces, but their inclusion here, arranged in chronological order, will enable the stage historian to assess Garrick's progress as a dramatist. Contents: Lethe; or, Esop in the Shades. A Dramatic Satire, 1740; The Lying Valet, 1741; Miss in Her Teens; or, The Medley of Lovers. A Farce, 1747; Lilliputt. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Actor, director, impresario, author, David Garrick (1717-1779) is the most legendary man of the theatre of modern times. He reformed English theatre practice, established a 'natural' style of acting, and made the profession socially acceptable. As his great friend Dr. Johnson remarked, no actor before Garrick had made so much money nor achieved such an eminent position in society. Not for nothing is the most exclusive club in London named after him: Garrick was the first international 'megastar'." "Garrick's circle of friends was enormous and covered the social spectrum, from lawyers and wine merchants to the most famous men of letters and statesmen of his time: Pope, Boswell, Edmund Burke, Lord Burlington, Lord Chesterfield, the Prime Minister Pitt the Elder, the Lord Chancellor: the Duke of Devonshire, Lord Spencer. In France he counted Diderot, d'Alembert, Baron d'Holbach and the philosophes among his acquaintance. Though never honoured, he was at the very centre of his world." "Drawing on the large amount of source material available - from the accounts of Johnson's friendship with Garrick by James Boswell, through descriptions of his acting by English, French and German critics, to his own diaries and letters - Jean Benedetti has written a lively and fascinating account of Garrick's style and reforms, clearly establishing his pivotal role in the development of acting and directing."--Book Jacket.

This book was released on 1982-06-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As playwrights David Garrick and George Colman the Elder showed themselves to be practical men of the theatre, providing excellent acting parts and well-constructed scenes capable of provoking laughter in any age. At one time they were rival managers of the two main London theatres, Drury Lane and Covent Garden, but their friendship was greater than their rivalry and survived until Garrick's death. This volume includes five plays: three short farces by Garrick, a full-length play by Colman and the famous collaborative work The Clandestine Marriage. The playwrights' abilities complemented each other and their eventual parting illustrates the divergence of comic styles that were popular at the time - the satirical and the sentimental. In his introduction Mr Wood describes the composition and expectations of the contemporary London audiences and the theatrical careers of the two playwright-managers.
