Rockefeller Vision: In Pursuit of the Best in Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas," reflect on an extraordinary act of philanthropy that was also a catalyst for momentous change in the art world. In establishing the Museum of Primitive Art (MPA) in 1956—the precursor to what is today the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas (AAOA) at the Metropolitan Museum—Nelson Rockefeller was a true pioneer, assembling what remains the greatest collection of fine art from these disparate fields. Perhaps even more important than this singular achievement, however, was Rockefeller's long campaign to place his collection at the Metropolitan Museum as a gift to the city and to the world, which he finally achieved in 1969 after nearly forty years of effort. Rockefeller's gift carried the unequivocal message that artists from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas are equal in every respect to those of their peers across the globe and throughout history. Yet until that time there was, famously, skepticism in the Western art world on this point as well as resistance from earlier generations of Metropolitan directors in viewing non-Western art as part of the institution's mission. Relying on his formidable powers of persuasion, Rockefeller eventually brokered an agreement to transfer the collections, staff, and library of the of the MPA to the Metropolitan, an astounding triumph that fundamentally changed the character of the museum, making the collections truly encyclopedic.

Who I Am with You Jessica Mason isn’t looking for love when she meets Ridley Chesterfield. Instead she is still reeling from the tragic, unexpected loss of her husband and daughter—and awaiting the arrival of her unborn child. Ridley Chesterfield is hiding out in Hope Springs, Idaho, avoiding a political scandal and the barrage of false media headlines that have tarnished his good name. The last thing Ridley wants is a relationship—but when fate leads him to form a friendship with his reclusive and pregnant neighbor, he wonders if this small-town hideout might be more of a long-term destination. Cross My Heart When Ashley Showalter and Ben Henning meet on Ashley’s horse rescue farm, they quickly discover how much they have in common. Both were raised by single moms. Both want to help where they see a need. And both work with horses in the Boise valley. The more time they spend together, both Ashley and Ben have the feeling that there could be something more between them. But Ben is a recovering alcoholic with five years of sobriety behind him, while Ashley’s brother is an opioid addict residing in court-ordered rehab. Holding fast to the belief that addicts can never be cured, Ashley has promised herself she will never walk knowingly into the chaos created by addiction. Will her brother’s mistakes and the pain of her past jeopardize her future with Ben? How Sweet It Is Businessman Jed Henning made his fortune with help from his brother Chris, but Chris has since disappeared. While searching for him in Boise, Jed goes to see the apartment where his great-great-grandparents lived as newlyweds in the late 1920s and discovers it’s available for rent. The attractive landlady, Holly Stanford, happens to need a tenant. Holly runs the restaurant left to her by her great aunt and uncle. Although struggling to keep it afloat, Holly still finds time to give back to the community, working with women in a local shelter. But what Jed never suspects is that Holly is the one person who might help him find his missing brother . . . while at the same time helping him find the happiness and contentment he longs for.

Book excerpt: A powerful, moving anthology that celebrates the breadth of Native poets writing today. Joy Harjo, the first Native poet to serve as U.S. Poet Laureate, has championed the voices of Native peoples past and present. Her signature laureate project gathers the work of contemporary Native poets into a national, fully digital map of story, sound, and space, celebrating their vital and unequivocal contributions to American poetry. This companion anthology features each poem and poet from the project—including Natalie Diaz, Ray Young Bear, Craig Santos Perez, Sherwin Bitsui, and Layli Long Soldier, among others—to offer readers a chance to hold the wealth of poems in their hands. The chosen poems reflect on the theme of place and displacement and circle the touchpoints of visibility, persistence, resistance, and acknowledgment. Each poem showcases, as Joy Harjo writes in her stirring introduction, “that heritage is a living thing, and there can be no heritage without land and the relationships that outline our kinship.” In this country, poetry is rooted in the more than five hundred living indigenous nations. Living Nations, Living Words is a representative offering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Legacy Collection is a book of short stories written in two parts. The first portion links the stories of four young friends who grow up together and go through a series of adventures as students in school and on into later life. It depicts their mischief, their industriousness (yes), their intellect, their love for each other, the military service of two of them and, finally, their tragic deaths as young adults. The most popular of the boys meets a mysterious death officially ruled a suicide -- or was it murder? The second part of the manuscript is a potpourri of short stories on many topics. These include the author sharing a pizza with Fidel Castro, a new, summarized version of the Challenger disaster, a comical takeoff on a Miami federal trial for mobster Meyer Lansky, a detailed report about Trinity Site in New Mexico where the first atomic bomb was tested, a bizarre kidnapping in Santo Domingo, a funny Christmas dinner in Fidel Castro's Cuba in the 1960s, a real character at Walt Disney World and a tear-jerker Christmas story from the little town of Christmas. Florida, USA. There are others, plus a few short poems within several of the pieces. The author is Isaac M. Flores, also known as Ike Flores. who worked for The Associated Press for more than 35 years. While there, he was a staff writer, and an editor on the General, Latin American and Foreign desks in New York. He became a foreign correspondent during the time of Fidel Castro in Cuba and then headed bureaus in Lisbon, Portugal, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. He later covered the Caribbean and the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. In retirement from AP, he was a senior writer for Lockheed-Martin, defense contractor in Orlando. He has written six books. He has a home in Winter Park, Florida, and currently resides in Greeensboro, North Carolina. His email address is [email protected]. Telephone 336 285-7315.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this outstanding cultural biography, the author of the New York Times bestseller A Slave in the White House chronicles a critical yet overlooked chapter in American history: the inspiring rise and calculated fall of the black elite, from Emancipation through Reconstruction to the Jim Crow Era—embodied in the experiences of an influential figure of the time, academic, entrepreneur, and political activist and black history pioneer Daniel Murray. In the wake of the Civil War, Daniel Murray, born free and educated in Baltimore, was in the vanguard of Washington, D.C.’s black upper class. Appointed Assistant Librarian at the Library of Congress—at a time when government appointments were the most prestigious positions available for blacks—Murray became wealthy through his business as a construction contractor and married a college-educated socialite. The Murrays’ social circles included some of the first African-American U.S. Senators and Congressmen, and their children went to the best colleges—Harvard and Cornell. Though Murray and other black elite of his time were primed to assimilate into the cultural fabric as Americans first and people of color second, their prospects were crushed by Jim Crow segregation and the capitulation to white supremacist groups by the government, which turned a blind eye to their unlawful—often murderous—acts. Elizabeth Dowling Taylor traces the rise, fall, and disillusionment of upper-class African Americans, revealing that they were a representation not of hypothetical achievement but what could be realized by African Americans through education and equal opportunities. As she makes clear, these well-educated and wealthy elite were living proof that African Americans did not lack ability to fully participate in the social contract as white supremacists claimed, making their subsequent fall when Reconstruction was prematurely abandoned all the more tragic. Illuminating and powerful, her magnificent work brings to life a dark chapter of American history that too many Americans have yet to recognize.

Book excerpt: The scions of a prominent Boston family, the brothers William and John Spaulding are remembered today for their legacy as art collectors in the early decades of the twentieth century. It was thanks to them that the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, acquired some of its most enduring masterworks: major European paintings by Goya, Cézanne, van Gogh, Matisse and many others; oils, watercolors and drawings by American masters such as Hopper, Kent and Homer; a remarkable archive of World War I propaganda posters; not to mention its world-renowned collection of Japanese prints. But while the Spaulding name has long been esteemed among art lovers, little has been known about the brothers themselves. Here, historian and collector Frederic A. Sharf sheds light on the men behind these landmark acquisitions, drawing on scores of family papers and archival documents. Handsomely illustrated with artworks from across the spectrum of the Spauldings' collection, as well as with numerous period photographs, this book portrays the crucial role played by collectors in shaping the public trusts that visitors enjoy to this day.
