Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lay Thesis on Bible Wines IN certain circles the question may be asked, Why should a maker of wines stray within the realms of theology? More perti'nently the ques tion could be reversed, but the answer would be speculative while the reply to the original question would be practical knowledge. So much has been written upon the wines of the Bible in a theologi cal sense, and so little in a practical way that I feel I will be pardoned for my invasion. There are elements in the use of wine that are not fun damental. A foundation seldom accurately pre dicts the structure that is to be raised upon its walls, and the lapse of nearly two thousand years before the two-wine theory is advanced shows con clusively the kind and nature of the building that may be erected if the foundation still exists. What I say in the succeeding pages is only the expression of thoughts I have gathered through experience, the result of what I, in childhood, was taught to believe, that the Bible told us what was evil and also told us how to avoid it. Right is right, and wrong is wrong; right cannot be wrong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Gin, Jesus, and Jim Crow, Brendan J. J. Payne reveals how prohibition helped realign the racial and religious order in the South by linking restrictions on alcohol with political preaching and the disfranchisement of Black voters. While both sides invoked Christianity, prohibitionists redefined churches’ doctrines, practices, and political engagement. White prohibitionists initially courted Black voters in the 1880s but soon dismissed them as hopelessly wet and sought to disfranchise them, stoking fears of drunken Black men defiling white women in their efforts to reframe alcohol restriction as a means of racial control. Later, as the alcohol industry grew desperate, it turned to Black voters, many of whom joined the brewers to preserve their voting rights and maintain personal liberties. Tracking southern debates about alcohol from the 1880s through the 1930s, Payne shows that prohibition only retreated from the region once the racial and religious order it helped enshrine had been secured.

Book excerpt: At first there were the horticulturists and wine growers, then came the wine makers, the coopers, and the cellar masters. Inevitably there were wine shippers and wine merchants. Chemists and biologists added their skills in the past two centuries, and only very recently came the oenologists and the professional wine tasters. Wine writers play an important role in today's wine trade, and there were always wine connoisseurs and wine snobs. From 5000BC to the modern day, this book provides a chronological history of the wine pioneers through the ages.
