Download or read book The Anglican Use Gradual (Second Edition) written by Charles David Burt and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major revision of The Anglican Use Gradual, 2007 which follows the structure of the Graduale Romanum and draws upon the musicological work of Dr. Palmer (G.H.P.), Francis Burgess (F.B.), and Winfred Douglas (W.D.). Since The Plainchant Gradual of Palmer and Burgess is again available in a reprint, I have eliminated most of the occasional melismatic chants and have included simple psalm tone chants based on Burgess' The English Gradual in order to provide a practical book that can be used in most churches. This expanded volume follows the structure and text of Divine Worship: The Missal, 2015, and covers all of the minor propers called for in that Missal. An index is included to adapt this book to the Ordinary Time lectionary sequence.
Book Synopsis Gradual Economic Reform in Latin America by : Mary A. Clark

This book was released on 2001-07-19 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gradual Economic Reform in Latin America questions why most Latin American countries have not nearly completed neoliberal economic reforms. Examining Costa Rica as an important example of the gradual, as opposed to radical, approach, Mary A. Clark utilizes over one hundred fifty interviews as well as secondary data to present ten mini-case studies of structural adjustment in the 1980s and 1990s. In analyzing the economic, social, and political outcomes of Costa Rica's experience, Clark concludes the gradual approach has yielded positive results, and compares this country's experiences with that of other Latin American welfare states.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Medieval Music by : Mark Everist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the emergence of plainsong to the end of the fourteenth century, this Companion covers all the key aspects of medieval music. Divided into three main sections, the book first of all discusses repertory, styles and techniques - the key areas of traditional music histories; next taking a topographical view of the subject - from Italy, German-speaking lands, and the Iberian Peninsula; and concludes with chapters on such issues as liturgy, vernacular poetry and reception. Rather than presenting merely a chronological view of the history of medieval music, the volume instead focuses on technical and cultural aspects of the subject. Over nineteen informative chapters, fifteen world-leading scholars give a perspective on the music of the Middle Ages that will serve as a point of orientation for the informed listener and reader, and is a must-have guide for anyone with an interest in listening to and understanding medieval music.

Book Synopsis Decadent Enchantments by : Katherine Bergeron
Download or read book Decadent Enchantments written by Katherine Bergeron and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest written tradition of European music, the art we know as Gregorian chant, is seen from an entirely new perspective in Katherine Bergeron's engaging and literate study. Bergeron traces the history of the Gregorian revival from its Romantic origins in a community of French monks at Solesmes, whose founder hoped to rebuild the moral foundation of French culture on the ruins of the Benedictine order. She draws out the parallels between this longing for a lost liturgy and the postrevolutionary quest for lost monuments that fueled the French Gothic revival, a quest that produced the modern concept of "restoration." Bergeron follows the technological development of the Gregorian restoration over a seventy-year period as it passed from the private performances of a monastic choir into the public commodities of printed books, photographs, and Gramophone records. She discusses such issues as architectural restoration, the modern history of typography, the uncanny power of the photographic image, and the authority of recorded sound. She also shows the extent to which different media shaped the modern image of the ancient repertory, an image that gave rise to conflicting notions not only of musical performance but of the very idea of music history.

Every aspect and part of the Mass is covered, the quotations forming a continuous commentary on the central action of the Church's worship. Most of the authors are canonized saints of the Church, and many are doctors of the Church. Included are Church Fathers such as St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and St. Gregory the Great; great scholars of the Middle Ages such as St. Anselm, St. Albert the Great and St. Thomas Aquinas; and more modern figures such as Prosper Gueranger and Pope John XXIII. The quotations have been selected and freshly translated by Fr. Thomas Crean. These writings will nourish understanding and appreciation of the Mass, and also aid prayer and contemplation.
Book Synopsis Polyphony in Medieval Paris by : Catherine A. Bradley
Download or read book Polyphony in Medieval Paris written by Catherine A. Bradley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyphony associated with the Parisian cathedral of Notre Dame marks a historical turning point in medieval music. Yet a lack of analytical or theoretical systems has discouraged close study of twelfth- and thirteenth-century musical objects, despite the fact that such creations represent the beginnings of musical composition as we know it. Is musical analysis possible for such medieval repertoires? Catherine A. Bradley demonstrates that it is, presenting new methodologies to illuminate processes of musical and poetic creation, from monophonic plainchant and vernacular French songs, to polyphonic organa, clausulae, and motets in both Latin and French. This book engages with questions of text-music relationships, liturgy, and the development of notational technologies, exploring concepts of authorship and originality as well as practices of quotation and musical reworking.

Book Synopsis Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality by : José Carlos Mariátegui
Download or read book Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality written by José Carlos Mariátegui and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-03-19 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Once again I repeat that I am not an impartial; objective critic. My judgments are nourished by my ideals, my sentiments, my passions. I have an avowed and resolute ambition: to assist in the creation of Peruvian socialism. I am far removed from the academic techniques of the university."—From the Author's Note Jose Carlos Mariátegui was one of the leading South American social philosophers of the early twentieth century. He identified the future of Peru with the welfare of the Indian at a time when similar ideas were beginning to develop in Middle America and the Andean region. Generations of Peruvian and other Latin American social thinkers have been profoundly influenced by his writings. Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality (Siete ensayos de interpretación de la realidad peruana), first published in 1928, is Mariátegui's major statement of his position and has gone into many editions, not only in Peru but also in other Latin American countries. The topics discussed in the essays—economic evolution, the problem of the Indian, the land problem, public education, the religious factor, regionalism and centralism, and the literary process—are in many respects as relevant today as when the book was written. Mariátegui's thinking was strongly tinged with Marxism. Because contemporary sociology, anthropology, and economics have been influenced by Marxism much more in Latin America than in North America, it is important that North Americans become more aware of Mariátegui's position and accord it its proper historical significance. Jorge Basadre, the distinguished Peruvian historian, in an introduction written especially for this translation, provides an account of Mariátegui's life and describes the political and intellectual climate in which these essays were written.
