The VOD service allows users to select and watch video contents over a network and provides VCR-like functionalities which give users the controls over the playback of media sessions. The VOD services are commonly provided in conjunction with a live streaming system. Some conventional architectures for VOD service are server-based or proxy-based which all users are connected to dedicated servers or server cluster in one hop distance. The video contents are delivered to end users directly from server in unicast pattern. However, such centralized communication pattern has obvious shortcomings. For instance, poor scalability due to the limited servers bandwidth and computing capacities, high vulnerability to malicious attacks or system failures. In this thesis, we are going to present a peer-to-peer based architecture for the video on demand service. The proposed VOD system can be implemented as part of a famous IPTV/P2PTV system, the PPLive. Our system provides benefits in the following aspects (1) past video programs can be replayed on demand of the users. (2) VCR-like functions are supported like pause and rewind (3) the peer to peer communication pattern makes the system highly scalable. (4) the system supports high throughput rate and has low service response time which guarantee high quality of service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of substantial amounts of data to a large number of clients is a problem that is often tackled by peer-to-peer(P2P)architectures. Bottlenecks are alleviated by distributing the work of the server to all participating peers. Content is no longer passed directly from the server to all clients but only to a small subset of peers from where it is forwarded to a different subset of clients. These basic P2P ideas can also be applied to the distribution of live content, such as video streams. Additional timing constraints and bandwidth requirements of this application context lead to new challenges. Peer failures or late arriving packets directly infuence the user perception, which is not the case in simple file distribution scenarios. This thesis first analyzes some of the major problems faced by P2P live media streaming, and then presents a new architecture to address these challenges. Starting from a tree-based approach, the architecture is enhanced with adaptation algorithms to finally evolve in a mesh-based system. The in-depth analysis of tree-based architectures shows that it is important to adapt a node's position in the tree according to its bandwidth capacity. The same analysis is conducted for mesh-based architectures and it is shown that the position on the distribution path has a significant influence on performance. Another important problem concerns the fairness aspect in terms of collaborators and so-called "free-riders". A P2P system works best if all peers contribute with their resources. This can be ensured by tit-for-tat mechanisms where peers return as much as they get. In this thesis a new kind of tit-for-tat mechanism is developed to combine bandwidth contribution with robustness - the more bandwidth a peer provides the more robust its position on the path becomes.

The approaches taken by corporations mainly involve costly solutions, that are hard to manage and scale. If next generation service providers are to deliver high quality on-demand video streaming to a large audience, new higher layer methodologies need to be developed. The success of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) has opened an interesting research area on very diverse distributed applications that exploit their self-organizing, self-managing and self-healing nature. The objective of this thesis is to offer an effective P2P solution that targets Next Generation Video-on-Demand Service Providers' need for distributed storage. To address the challenges of low startup delay, provision of VCR commands, scalability and management of the system we propose a MultiLayered Hybrid P2P topology for the distribution of and search for content.

Book excerpt: Specifically, our analysis shows that popularity affects swarm efficiency when seeds stay "long enough". We also show that ABR in a P2P setting helps viewers achieve higher playback rates and/or fewer interruptions. We develop the Joint-Family protocol based on the observations from our analysis. Peers in Joint-Family simultaneously participate in multiple swarms to exchange chunks of different bitrates. We adopt chunk, bitrate, and peer selection policies that minimize occurrence of interruptions while delivering high quality video and improving the efficiency of the system. Using traces from a large-scale commercial VoD service, we compare Joint-Family with existing approaches for P2P VoD and show that viewers in Joint-Family enjoy higher playback rates with minimal interruption, irrespective of video popularity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuous media streaming systems will shape the future of information infrastructure. The challenge is to design systems and networks capable of supporting millions of concurrent users. Key to this is the integration of fault-tolerant mechanisms to prevent individual component failures from disrupting systems operations. These are just some of the hurdles that need to be overcome before large-scale continuous media services such as video-on-demand can be deployed with maximum efficiency. The author places the subject in context, drawing together findings from the past decade of research whilst examining the technology’s present status and its future potential. The approach adopted is comprehensive, covering topics – notably the scalability and fault-tolerance issues - that previously have not been treated in depth. Provides an accessible introduction to the technology, presenting the basic principles for media streaming system design, focusing on the need for the correct and timely delivery of data. Explores the use of parallel server architectures to tackle the two key challenges of scalability and fault-tolerance. Investigates the use of network multicast streaming algorithms to further increase the scalability of very-large-scale media streaming systems. Illustrates all findings using real-world examples and case studies gleaned from cutting-edge worldwide research. Combining theory and practice, this book will appeal to industry specialists working in content distribution in general and continuous media streaming in particular. The introductory materials and basic building blocks complemented by amply illustrated, more advanced coverage provide essential reading for senior undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the Internet has witnessed a significant increase in the popularity of video streaming systems for Video-on-Demand (VoD) or live streaming services. The large-scale content distribution of these systems has become increasingly prevalent and contributes to a significant portion of Internet traffic. Designing such a large scale, fast growing video streaming platform with high availability and scalability is technically challenging. Traditionally, it requires either a massive and costly computation, storage and network delivery infrastructure, or a peer-to-peer (P2P) strategy, which deploys local resources of participating users. To make it worse, the servers usually have to be over-provisioned for the peak load to serve the heterogeneous and dynamic user demands in a large scale with guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). The emergence of cloud computing however sheds new lights into this dilemma. A cloud platform offers reliable, elastic and cost-effective resource provisioning, which has been dramatically changing the way of enabling scalable and dynamic network services for large scale video streaming systems. First, cloud computing can provide an elastic service and scale the provisioned server resource online in a fine granularity. Second, the geo-distributed cloud sites can respond to the globalized request demands with the qualified service. Third, the cloud-assisted strategy is highly compatible with current prevalent P2P video streaming systems in a hybrid solution. Therefore, the cloud-assisted strategies for large scale video streaming systems call for the novel solutions to provide the cost-effective services. In this thesis, we tackle the design issues of cloud-assisted strategies. First, we propose a flexible cloud based provisioning strategy to serve highly time-varying demands in the P2P VoD systems. Then, leveraging the geo-distributed cloud services, we build a prototype of crowdsourced live streaming platform and explore the streaming quality under the influence of different cloud site leasing strategies. Synergizing the P2P and cloud resource, we model the combinational cost problem, and present an optimal solution and a distributed solution toward a scalable and cost effective service over the hybrid VoD streaming systems. Our analysis and experimental results demonstrate the superiority of proposed systematic solutions for the large scale video streaming systems.
