Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An emotionally raw and resonant story of love, loss, and the enduring power of friendship, following the lives of two young women connected by a home for “fallen girls,” and inspired by historical events. “Home for Erring and Outcast Girls deftly reimagines the wounded women who came seeking a second chance and a sustaining hope.”—Lisa Wingate, author of Before We Were Yours In turn-of-the-20th century Texas, the Berachah Home for the Redemption and Protection of Erring Girls is an unprecedented beacon of hope for young women consigned to the dangerous poverty of the streets by birth, circumstance, or personal tragedy. Built in 1903 on the dusty outskirts of Arlington, a remote dot between Dallas and Fort Worth’s red-light districts, the progressive home bucks public opinion by offering faith, training, and rehabilitation to prostitutes, addicts, unwed mothers, and “ruined” girls without forcibly separating mothers from children. When Lizzie Bates and Mattie McBride meet there—one sick and abused, but desperately clinging to her young daughter, the other jilted by the beau who fathered her ailing son—they form a friendship that will see them through unbearable loss, heartbreak, difficult choices, and ultimately, diverging paths. A century later, Cate Sutton, a reclusive university librarian, uncovers the hidden histories of the two troubled women as she stumbles upon the cemetery on the home’s former grounds and begins to comb through its archives in her library. Pulled by an indescribable connection, what Cate discovers about their stories leads her to confront her own heartbreaking past, and to reclaim the life she thought she'd let go forever. With great pathos and powerful emotional resonance, Home for Erring and Outcast Girls explores the dark roads that lead us to ruin, and the paths we take to return to ourselves.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before its immense population surge, Arlington never dreamed small. In the 1930s, Arlington Downs attracted thousands to its state-of-the-art horse racing facility. Just three decades later, Six Flags Over Texas opened, cementing a reputation as an entertainment destination. The hubbub of the stadiums and shopping complexes that followed often obscured other parts of the community's rich heritage, including far-reaching contributions to the disability rights movement. The city suffered growing pains as well, such as the demise of college football and the deadly 1892 train depot shootout that ended the town's lawless period. Join Evelyn Barker, along with Davis McCown, Leslie Wagner and Trevor Engel, for the forgotten details of Arlington's dynamic past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, history teacher Julia Kathryn Garrett of Fort Worth began collecting stories from old-timers and pioneers whose memory or knowledge reached back to the early days of the city. For fifteen summer vacations she worked from morning to night on her book, creating an anecdotal chronicle of the early years of the city that began as a fort on the Trinity River in 1849. She closed her history with events a quarter of a century later, when Fort Worth was poised on the edge of growth, ready to become a modern city with the 1876 arrival of the railroad. First published in 1972 and reprinted by TCU Press in 1996.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While revival may be for a season, the Kingdom of God is “unshakeable and never-ending.” The Supernatural Skyline unpacks revival, then proposes God’s greater plan of continuing Kingdom encounters. Full of supernatural experiences and practical expressions of Christ living in and working through His people today, The Supernatural Skyline will expand your vision of the Kingdom to include exciting new spiritual possibilities. Written for thinking Christians who want church life to be meaningful, relevant, and culturally engaging, The Supernatural Skyline contends that the church needs to accept the “keys to the Kingdom” and use those keys to unlock doors currently closed to Christ and His purpose. Defining the Kingdom of God as Jesus’ life enacted in every sphere—justice, government, economics, education, art—any realm that influences people and their culture—this book will challenge you to consider fresh concepts and biblically sound principles.

Book Synopsis Boys to Men by : William P. Mitchell
Download or read book Boys to Men written by William P. Mitchell and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boys to Men is a fascinating account of life in America from before the great depression through World War II and beyond. A common thread is present, due to the fact that all these stories are vividly depicted by some of the crew, as well as a former Lieutenant on the USS Perkins during the war. Each author brings a different background and flavor to the book. From life aboard the ship during normal operations, to the horrors of battle and her ultimate sinking in 1943, these pages are a tribute to the brave men that served aboard the USS Perkins. Stories include everything from slices of life in America during hard, but simpler times, to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Inside is a moving first hand account by a Lieutenant of the Perkins, who also served aboard the USS Oklahoma during the Pearl Harbor attack and narrowly escaped with his life. Detailed descriptions of combat at sea, to life after the Navy, paint a complete picture of a generation filled with great difficulties and even greater successes. The Perkins was a vessel instrumental in transporting her crew on vast journeys to and from exotic and not so exotic destinations. Like the ship, these stories cover a great deal of time and territory. Although she slipped into the darkness to rest forever in depths of a silent watery grave, the Perkins first took these men on perhaps the greatest journey of all the journey from boys to men.
Download or read book Walking with God written by Diane Johnson and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “BACK COVER SUMMARY” A strange thing started happening to me a few months back. I found myself waking up around 5:00 a.m. or so several mornings with a strong need to study the Bible on a particular subject or maybe a special scripture. I found myself pouring out my heart into written devotionals. I write about depression, anger, love, trust, finding new siblings, and always trusting in God for the strength and guidance through each new journey. The more I allowed the Holy Spirit to guide me, the more at peace my life became, and the more I wanted to share my experiences with others. I set out to write a year's worth of weekly devotionals. Walking with God contains the first twenty-six of those fifty-two devotionals. The life lessons that I write about are some that I am sure a lot of us face. My hope is that this book, which is filled with God's words and His love, will give someone a little more hope, a little more strength, and a little more peace to keep fighting the fight and staying on the winning team. God's team. Romans 8:37-39 says, "But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
