Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Electro-Therapeutics: A Manual of Laboratory Experimentation for Students of Medicine Such recognition is now, however, no longer withheld by those who are abreast of the best medical practice of the day and the study of electricity as a science, and by the laboratory method, is rapidly becoming an absolute essential in the educa tion of the general practitioner. In recognition of these facts an optional laboratory course in electricity for professional students was several years ago established in the University of Michigan. The need of a suit able manual was quickly felt, and in 1884 Professor J. W. Lang ley, by whom the course was organized, published what may be. Called the pioneer work in this line of electrical study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Student's Manual of Electro-Therapeutics, Vol. 5 This little book is presented to the medical public, chiefly as a protest against the mysticism and charlatanry which have ever hung around the literature and practice of electro-therapeutics. As our scientific knowledge of other therapeutic procedures developed, they gradually escaped from the thraldom of quackery. Not so with electricity. Its showiness, its instantaneous and startling physiological effects, and its name, popularly synonymous with life, have long and will long continue to make it a fashionable remedy, a cure-all for imaginary diseases, a popular placebo, a gold mine for charlatans and symptom-treating physicians, who let their patients make the diagnosis and suggest the treatment. Never does the question, "Was my patient cured or did he get well?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Electrotherapy: And Their Practical Application This book is the outcome of an attempt to explain the therapeutic action of electricity upon rational grounds and upon physiological principles. In Part I current electricity is discussed. The thera peutie action of static electricity is here considered, because it is mainly the currents derived from the static machine, and not the static charge itself, which possess therapeutic action. The static machine serves to generate a static charge, which, when sufficient voltage has been attained, discharges as a current of very low intensity, but of very high potential, and so affords methods of therapy unattainable by other means. The necessity of clearly distinguishing between the polar and inter-polar action of the constant current is pointed out. The action of interrupted currents of low frequency is shown to be due to the relatively high velocity of the hydrogen ion compared to the velocities of the other ions in the tissues.
