Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological Chemistry IN view of the results attained from the course given in physiological chemistry in this University, as well as the experience of others, the author is firmly convinced of the superiority of the laboratory method of instruction over the didactic, believing that it is only by practical work that the student can become familiar with the physio logical changes in progress in the animal body and their products. This book has been prepared with the aim of imparting accurate knowledge through the student's own observation. It has seemed advisable to include with the directions for experimental work a brief explanation of the facts observed, so as to call attention to their meaning; or, at times, to state others which are important, but which could not well be demonstrated in such a course as this. Some acquaintance with general chemistry and with chemical manipulation is presupposed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological and Pathological Chemistry: For Students in Medicine I am very much pleased that Dr. Orndorff has taken upon himself the translation into English of the second edition of my book "Practicum der physiologischen und pathologischen Chemic." The exact knowledge of German which Dr. Orndorff has acquired by long residence in Germany, together with his well-known scientific qualifications, guarantees a correct translation. That part of the book dealing with inorganic chemistry has not been translated, as the students in medicine in America have usually completed a required course in qualitative analysis before they take up organic and physiological chemistry. In the description, moreover, of the Kjeldahl method of determining the amount of nitrogen in organic substances, the modification adopted by the "Association of Official Agricultural Chemists of the United States," which is the one generally used in America, has been given. It has therefore also seemed expedient to omit the Schneider-Segen method. A number of errors in the German edition have been corrected in this translation; and some additions and changes have been made, those due to Dr. Orndorff being indicated in foot-notes. The tables of specific gravities given are the most accurate that have been published. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Work in Physiological Chemistry This edition is greatly enlarged and indeed wholly re-written. The directions for laboratory work cover the three great food-stuffs, and the fluids and secretions of the body. Brief explanatory descriptions of the various sub stances and secretions studied are added in order to give the student a better survey of the subject matter as a whole. Every medical student should receive thorough drill in the laboratory, not merely in so-called urine analysis, but in the broader field of physiological chemistry. He should be taught to observe and to reason; to correlate the facts brought out in the laboratory in their relation to physiology, hygiene and disease. These notes have been prepared with the object of furthering such study, and it is hoped that they will prove as useful to others as to the author's own classes in the University of Michigan. The experimental work laid down in the following pages has been repeatedly verified in actual student work and the directions given are such as to insure results. The.author's classes devote the entire afternoon, daily, for three months to this work. Even with this amount of time at their disposal certain parts of physiological chemistry must be left untouched. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiological Chemistry This book was originally compiled as a handbook for prae tical work in Physiological Chemistry at University College, London, since no single text or class book covered the complete course, or treated Physiological Chemistry as part of the subject of Organic Chemistry, or even as an in dependent subject. The present book must still be regarded mainly as a compilation. It represents an attempt to give to the worker a nearly complete statement of the whole subject. Each section has a short explanatory summary of the essential points, so as to connect the various sections together. The essential points are illustrated by the practical experiments, which are printed in different type. The illustrations are also compiled from various sources. These are mentioned underneath each figure. The illustra tions of apparatus not so mentioned have been drawn from my own sketches. For those of the osazone crystals, haemin, and tyrosine, I am indebted to Miss V. G. Sheffield, who has also kindly helped in reading the proof sheets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physiological Chemistry, for Students of Medicine In the following pages I have attempted to present a brief account of the important principles of physiological chemistry in a form suitable for the use of medical students who may be assumed to have completed courses in the elements of general inorganic and organic chemistry. From the very necessities of the case a work of this character, dealing with many topics in an elementary way, must be largely a compilation; in the selection of material, besides consulting the standard hand books, I have made free use of the recent monographs by Cohnheim. Effront and Oppenheimer, as well as of numerous articles in the Zeitschrift fur physiologische Chemie, the Beitrage zur chemischen Physiologie und Pathologie and other journals. As the book is intended for beginners I have not thought it necessary to make any special quotations of literature references. In addition to the usual topics of discussion in elementary works on physiological chemistry I have given an outline of the chemical phases of the recent theories of immunity, and a short explanation of the important applications of the methods of cryoscopy and electrical conductivity, and other physical processes, in the field of chemistry related to medicine. Work in these latter lines must soon become a part of the laboratory training of medical students. A considerable number of illustrative experiments are given in the text, but distinguished by being printed in smaller type. These experiments are sufficiently numerous and comprehensive to serve the purpose of a laboratory course parallel with the general course. In the work of proofreading I have received very material assistance from my colleague, Dr. W. H. Buhlig, to whom my sincere thanks are due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiological Chemistry: A Book Designed for Use in Courses The book has been thoroughly revised and in part rewritten. Five additional chapters have been inserted, in order to increase the usefulness of the volume and to keep thoroughly abreast with recent developments in Physiological Chemistry. The new Chapters are, Chapter VI on Nucleic Acids and Nucleoproteins, Chapter VIII on Gastric Analysis, Chapter XI on Intestinal Digestion, Chapter XVI on Blood Analysis and Chapter XXVII on Metabolism. The Chapter on Metabolism consists in large part of directions for typical metabolism tests which may be conducted by the student in order to demonstrate important principles of metabolism. The Chapter on Blood Analysis includes the most recent methods which have played such an important part in adding to our knowledge regarding the composition of the blood under normal and pathological conditions. The Chapter on Gastric Analysis includes a general discussion of titratable acidity and hydrogen-ion concentration as well as an exposition of the Fractional Method of Gastric Analysis which was elaborated in the authors laboratory by Dr. Martin E. Rehfuss, and which has been very widely adopted. The Chapter on Nucleic Acids and Nucleoproteins is a brief discussion of basic facts accompanied by experiments suitable for student use. In order to facilitate the selection of tests and methods for courses in which but little time is devoted to the subject, the actual laboratory procedure involved in such tests and methods as the author considers most important has been printed in black face type to differentiate such tests and methods from those which he considers of less importance, which are set in small type. In certain instances, however, tests and methods which the author believes to be of first importance, but which are not so readily adapted to student use, have been printed in small type. The latest and best methods of quantitative analysis have been introduced throughout the volume. The nephelometer has been discussed and certain nephelometric methods described. Certain tests and methods which had obviously outlived their usefulness have been omitted from this edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory Work in Physiological Chemistry: For the Use of Students The second edition of this Manual appears as the result of a thorough revision of the original edition, which was issued last year; numerous additions to the subject-matter have also been inserted. In its preparation the author has had in mind to provide a guide for systematic work in a course in Physiological Chemistry such as is given in the majority of the American Medical Schools. An attempt has been made to present, in experimental form, all of the essentials of the subject. At the same time, the experiments are simple and of a form which would not overstep the possibilities of equipment and time available in the average laboratory in physiological chemistry. Those facts which do not allow of simple experimental study have been ignored. The text preceding the experiments has been limited to an explanation merely sufficient for a correct understanding and performance of the work indicated, with the expectation that the laboratory course will be supplemented by lectures showing the important relationship of the pure chemistry of the subject to physiological and pathological processes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Physiological Chemistry in Thirty Lectures Physiology and physiological chemistry were at one time a single field of investigation. The latter, owing to the remarkable progress of the exact sciences chemistry and physics, has now developed to such an impor tant branch of natural science that it is altogether impossible today for any one scientist to master thoroughly in all its details the whole field of physiology. Little by little, there has developed a sharp distinction between pure physiology and physiological chemistry. It is clear that an artificial separation of two such closely related fields of investiga tion must work to disadvantage for the development of each, so that it is fortunate to find it recognized more and more that the whole science of physiology can only develop satisfactorily when there is an intimate exchange of ideas between investigators in the two fields. The chemical decompositions in the tissues do not take place beside the physiological processes, but are bound up with them. In no single case can we carry out any distinction-in such a sense; and with those organs in which the relations between the functions and the metabolism are not known, this is chiefly because of our limited knowledge concerning the latter. In this connection we need only recall the whole nervous system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Laboratory Course in Chemistry The course of practical chemistry outlined in this book is intended for students who are beginning the subject and at the same time taking a course of lectures on general chemistry. It was arranged primarily for the first year Arts course Of the University of Toronto, in which all science students - whether they are taking chemistry for two years only or whether they intend to Specialise in this subject - are required to do exactly the same work in their first year. It has been necessary therefore to keep in view the twofold object of giving the former class of students, in a very limited period, as fair an idea as possible of the general nature of chemistry, and at the same time, of providing the latter class with a good working basis for their subsequent course. Owing to the short time spent in the laboratory (two afternoons a week) many important principles have been necessarily omitted. The principles especially emphasised, however, are those which, on account Of their inherent difficulty or Of some traditional error in previous in struction, generally appear to give most trouble to the student.
