The exact knowledge of German which Dr. Orndorff has acquired by long residence in Germany, together with his well-known scientific qualifications, guarantees a correct translation. That part of the book dealing with inorganic chemistry has not been translated, as the students in medicine in America have usually completed a required course in qualitative analysis before they take up organic and physiological chemistry. In the description, moreover, of the Kjeldahl method of determining the amount of nitrogen in organic substances, the modification adopted by the "Association of Official Agricultural Chemists of the United States," which is the one generally used in America, has been given. It has therefore also seemed expedient to omit the Schneider-Segen method. A number of errors in the German edition have been corrected in this translation; and some additions and changes have been made, those due to Dr. Orndorff being indicated in foot-notes. From the very necessities of the case a work of this character, dealing with many topics in an elementary way, must be largely a compilation; in the selection of material, besides consulting the standard hand books, I have made free use of the recent monographs by Cohnheim. Effront and Oppenheimer, as well as of numerous articles in the Zeitschrift fur physiologische Chemie, the Beitrage zur chemischen Physiologie und Pathologie and other journals. As the book is intended for beginners I have not thought it necessary to make any special quotations of literature references. In addition to the usual topics of discussion in elementary works on physiological chemistry I have given an outline of the chemical phases of the recent theories of immunity, and a short explanation of the important applications of the methods of cryoscopy and electrical conductivity, and other physical processes, in the field of chemistry related to medicine. Work in these latter lines must soon become a part of the laboratory training of medical students. A considerable number of illustrative experiments are given in the text, but distinguished by being printed in smaller type. These experiments are sufficiently numerous and comprehensive to serve the purpose of a laboratory course parallel with the general course. Five additional chapters have been inserted, in order to increase the usefulness of the volume and to keep thoroughly abreast with recent developments in Physiological Chemistry. The new Chapters are, Chapter VI on Nucleic Acids and Nucleoproteins, Chapter VIII on Gastric Analysis, Chapter XI on Intestinal Digestion, Chapter XVI on Blood Analysis and Chapter XXVII on Metabolism. The Chapter on Metabolism consists in large part of directions for typical metabolism tests which may be conducted by the student in order to demonstrate important principles of metabolism. The Chapter on Blood Analysis includes the most recent methods which have played such an important part in adding to our knowledge regarding the composition of the blood under normal and pathological conditions. The Chapter on Gastric Analysis includes a general discussion of titratable acidity and hydrogen-ion concentration as well as an exposition of the Fractional Method of Gastric Analysis which was elaborated in the authors laboratory by Dr. Martin E. Rehfuss, and which has been very widely adopted. The Chapter on Nucleic Acids and Nucleoproteins is a brief discussion of basic facts accompanied by experiments suitable for student use. In order to facilitate the selection of tests and methods for courses in which but little time is devoted to the subject, the actual laboratory procedure involved in such tests and methods as the author considers most important has been printed in black face type to differentiate such tests and methods from those which he considers of less importance, which are set in small type. In certain instances, however, tests and methods which the author believes to be of first importance, but which are not so readily adapted to student use, have been printed in small type. The latest and best methods of quantitative analysis have been introduced throughout the volume. The nephelometer has been discussed and certain nephelometric methods described. Certain tests and methods which had obviously outlived their usefulness have been omitted from this edition. The latter, owing to the remarkable progress of the exact sciences chemistry and physics, has now developed to such an impor tant branch of natural science that it is altogether impossible today for any one scientist to master thoroughly in all its details the whole field of physiology. Little by little, there has developed a sharp distinction between pure physiology and physiological chemistry. It is clear that an artificial separation of two such closely related fields of investiga tion must work to disadvantage for the development of each, so that it is fortunate to find it recognized more and more that the whole science of physiology can only develop satisfactorily when there is an intimate exchange of ideas between investigators in the two fields. The chemical decompositions in the tissues do not take place beside the physiological processes, but are bound up with them. In no single case can we carry out any distinction-in such a sense; and with those organs in which the relations between the functions and the metabolism are not known, this is chiefly because of our limited knowledge concerning the latter.
