Cet ouvrage est d'abord une défense de l'évolution en général et du darwinisme en particulier. Il démonte tout aussi bien les affirmations des tenants du créationnisme que de l'Intelligent Design. Sa thèse centrale est qu'il n'y a pas besoin d'une violation des lois de la nature pour expliquer comment les formes de vies complexes ont pu se constituer. Mais l'auteur montre aussi que le darwinisme a été "pris en otage" par des biologistes et des philosophes adeptes d'un matérialisme voulant laisser le minimum de place à la religion dans la société et dans l'esprit des hommes. Il explique comment on peut concevoir l'évolution comme étant la voie utilisée par Dieu pour créer l'homme. Cela lui apparaît cohérent à la fois sur le plan théologique (Dieu ne viole pas ses propres lois, il est donc normal que l'évolution de la vie puisse se produire uniquement à partir de ses lois) et sur le plan scientifique. L'auteur est chrétien, mais en quel Dieu croit-il ? lui demande-t-on régulièrement. Au même Dieu que Darwin, répond-il ! Car Darwin a écrit à la fin de L'Origine des espèces - dont nous fêtons cette année le 150e anniversaire de la publication : "II y a de la grandeur dans cette vision de la vie avec toutes ses potentialités introduites à l'origine par le Créateur dans un petit nombre de formes ou dans une seule."
