Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Key to the Popery of Oxford IN drawing attention to the subject matter of the present publi cation, the Author feels himself called upon to add a few lines by way of Introduction, not as requiring any apology for the step he now takes, but as an explanation due to those who may not have seen his former pamphlet, to which this is intended as another Appendix. Circumstances connected with the former, being rather peculiar in their nature, may better serve the end the Author has 1n view by being related than suppressed, as they will prove, when examined into, that the object aimed at wast an honest and simple desire to have the subject under dis cussion taken up by such only as had the power, talents, piety, and experience, requisite for such an enterprize. Ever since the year 1833, the state of things 1n respect to religious truth in Oxford, had been becoming gradually mme decided in its cha racte1, and no step was taken by any one to remedy the growing evil. In the sprmg of last yea1, the Author gave notice of an intention to bring the subject. Before the public, having adver tised nearly th1ee months p1evious to its issumg from the press. Book excerpt: The American poet and essayist Louise Imogen Guiney was a prominent figure of the Boston literary circle of her day. She is chiefly known for her lyrical, Old English-style poems, recalling the conventions of seventeenth-century poetry. Informed by her religious faith, Guiney's works exhibit a concern for the Catholic tradition, while emphasising moral rectitude and heroic gallantry. By the end of the nineteenth century, Guiney was regarded as a major contributor to American literature. In later years, she turned to scholarship, concentrating on neglected poets. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting. This volume presents Guiney’s complete works, with numerous illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. Book excerpt: Well over a century and a half after its high point, the Oxford Movement continues to stand out as a powerful example of religion in action. Led by four young Oxford dons--John Henry Newman, John Keble, Richard Hurrell Froude, and Edward Pusey--this renewal movement within the Church of England was a central event in the political, religious, and social life of the early Victorian era. This book offers an up-to-date and highly accessible overview of the Oxford Movement. Beginning formally in 1833 with John Keble's famous "National Apostasy" sermon and lasting until 1845, when Newman made his celebrated conversion to Roman Catholicism, the Oxford Movement posed deep and far-reaching questions about the relationship between Church and State, the Catholic heritage of the Church of England, and the Church's social responsibility, especially in the new industrial society. The four scholar-priests, who came to be known as the Tractarians (in reference to their publication of Tracts for the Times), courted controversy as they attacked the State for its insidious incursions onto sacred Church ground and summoned the clergy to be a thorn in the side of the government. C. Brad Faught approaches the movement thematically, highlighting five key areas in which the movement affected English society more broadly--politics, religion and theology, friendship, society, and missions. The advantage of this thematic approach is that it illuminates the frequently overlooked wider political, social, and cultural impact of the movement. The questions raised by the Tractarians remain as relevant today as they were then. Their most fundamental question--"What is the place of the Church in the modern world?"--still remains unanswered.
