Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Jubilee Review of the First Baptist Church: Brantford 1833 to 1884 The land now occupied by the now city of Brantford was originally owned by the Six Nation Indians, but was, on the lgth day of April, 1830, surrendered by them to the government. The first lot sold by the govern ment was to William Muirhead, on the 15th October, 1830, being lot eight, on the north side of Colborne street, now owned by Bradford G. Tisdale, Esq. The next one sold was number sixteen on the same side of the same street, to Jedediah Jackson, who proved himself a great friend to the First Baptist Church, and to the Rev. William Rees, its first Pastor. It was in an unfinished frame building on the east part of this lot that the church was first organized. The council was composed of ministerial and lay delegates from the churches in the neighborhood. This part of the lot is now owned by Geo. Foster and Wm. Buck, two staunch Baptists. For several years a school house, situate where the town hall now stands, was the only public building in the village, and it was used for all manner of public and religious purposes. Smith's Canadian Gazetteer of 1846 reports thus Brantford is a place of considerable business. It contains seven churches and chapels, namely: Episcopalian, Presby terian, Catholic, Methodist, Baptist and Congregational. Population nearly When, in 1833, the Baptist Church was formed, there would be a population of about 400 or 500 - not more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation An examination of the intersection of religious and familial discourse over the course of two centuries. Households of Faith examines a variety of religious traditions with a particular focus on the way in which religious communities define gender identities. The authors explore the boundaries drawn in religious discourse between the private and public, offering a revisionist perspective on the theoretical framework of separate spheres. By analysing gender relations within the matrix of the family, they explore both the conflicts and interdependency of gender roles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living as an Ordinary RadicalMany of us find ourselves caught somewhere between unbelieving activists and inactive believers. We can write a check to feed starving children or hold signs in the streets and feel like we’ve made a difference without ever encountering the faces of the suffering masses. In this book, Shane Claiborne describes an authentic faith rooted in belief, action, and love, inviting us into a movement of the Spirit that begins inside each of us and extends into a broken world. Shane’s faith led him to dress the wounds of lepers with Mother Teresa, visit families in Iraq amidst bombings, and dump $10,000 in coins and bills on Wall Street to redistribute wealth. Shane lives out this revolution each day in his local neighborhood, an impoverished community in North Philadelphia, by living among the homeless, helping local kids with homework, and “practicing resurrection” in the forgotten places of our world. Shane’s message will comfort the disturbed, and disturb the comfortable . . . but will also invite us into an irresistible revolution. His is a vision for ordinary radicals ready to change the world with little acts of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using extensive quantitative data, Burley provides a cultural analysis of the business community during the mid-nineteenth century. Because self-employment was so pervasive in Brantford, the impact of industrialization was particularly striking. Self-employed businessmen were forced to try to locate themselves in an emerging class system which often contradicted traditional Victorian social ideals of independence and manliness. Burley's exploration of the tensions behind these conflicting values - tensions both between myth and reality and within the bourgeois world view itself - is an important addition to the literature on business behaviour and Victorian cultural history. A Particular Condition in Life will be of interest to social, urban, and labour historians, sociologists, and those interested in the history of Ontario.
