Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey to Egypt and the Holy Land, in 1869-1870IN offering to the public a volume of travels extend ing over countries often visited and described, a few words of explanation may be necessary. For it may be asked, Why publish such a book Our answer is, To meet the wishes of numerous friends, and also to contribute something to the knowledge of the sacred and classical lands within a compass that may be easily read; perhaps moved too by something of the spirit of Juvenal, Shall I be forever 3. Hearer only P* I had for years cherished an intense desire to visit Europe, and especially Palestine, consecrated by the presence and labors of the Prophets, of Christ, and of his Apostles. Without visiting Europe and the Orient, I felt that my education was incomplete, - that there was a vacuum that must be filled up.Through the kindness of the Hon. J. A. J. Cres well, postmaster-general, I procured letters from the Hon. Secretary of State to the consul-general of Egypt, the Consul of Jerusalem, and our Minister at Constantinople Hon. Edward Joy Morris.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Egypt and Nubia, Syria, and the Holy Land: Including a Journey Round the Dead Sea, and Through the Country East of the Jordan On the 14th of August, 1816, the Hon. Charles Leonard Irby and James Mangles, Commanders in the Royal Navy, left England, with the intention of making a tour on the Continent. This journey they were led to extend far beyond the original design. Curiosity at first, and an increasing admiration of antiquities as they advanced, carried them at length through several parts of the Levant, which have been little visited by modem travellers, and gave them more than four years of continued employment. Soon after their return to England, in the end of the year 1820, they were induced to transcribe a selection of the letters which they had addressed during their absence to their families in England, as the most convenient mode of satisfying the inquiries of numerous friends. A limited Edition, for private circulation only, was in consequence printed: this was so well received, and the copies were in such request, that Mr. Murray has been solicited, as a small mark of the friendship and esteem of the writers, kindly to accept the copyright, and further to oblige them by giving the book publicity in the more popular form of his Colonial and Home Library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journal of Travels in Egypt, Arabia Petraea, and the Holy LandThe climate of Malta is warm, and the heat in the summer is said to he often oppressive. It very seldom rains there durmg the summer months, but there are heavy falls of dew. I was informed that when the South wind blows in summer, the heat is very pros trating. The atmosphere assumes a hazy appear ance, and the air sometimes has a disagreeable odor. Its effects on furniture and book-covers is, to crack and warp them. After this wind has lasted a day or two, the air becomes still and confined, producing a sensation exceedingly uncomfortable. This wind, which comes from the heated plains of Africa, is not purified from the corrupt miasma it contains by pass ing over the narrow space of water lying between this island and that continent.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Very early in the morning of the 7th of October, the procurator entered my apartment, and informed me how matters stood between the pacha and the superior. We concerted our measures accordingly. And while ascending the Nile, near the place where the infant Moses was found in the flags Of the river, my youngest child, a bright and darling boy in his fourth year, was taken up to the bosom of the Good Shepherd. TO their blessed memories, and to my be loved Christian Flock, by whose approval and kind liberality the journey was undertaken, I dedicate this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Travel in Egypt, the Holy Land, Turkey, and Greece I am fully aware how imperfect is this attempt to de scribe the lands of the Bible, or to convey my own im pressions on visiting them. No words _of mine can ex press to you the happiness which I felt, and still feel, in those scenes, which have made the sacred vblume a new book to me, by giving a reality to its records, and illumi nating its every page. Egypt and Palestine, the land of bondage and the land of promise, are now no longer, as they once seemed to me, distant and unapproachable lands, overshadowed with mystery; but they are familiar as my own native land. The towns and villages, the fields and fountains, the 'hills and streams of syria-bethlehem, Bethany, and Nazareth, - Samaria, Sychar, and Galilee, Mount Zion, Moriah, and Olivet, - Tabor, and Hermon, and carmel, -tyre and Sidon, -are as distinctly before my mind's eye, while I write, as the well remembered scenes of my childhood; and touch a more responsive cord than they.
