Book excerpt: What started as a practice of reading Daily Guides for Spiritual Living, reflecting and recording their promptings and illuminations, turned into a journey of consciousness and a pilgrimage of author Roger Berg to understanding his deeper self. This is a story of one person's life, told not from its beginning nor to some conclusion, but at a point in time when this person's consciousness opened and became receptive to a desire to know the recurring themes and underlying values that have given meaning, purpose, and direction to his life. He analyzed and categorized his writings and discovered values and themes that have been a part of him all his life, now revealed. It was a renaissance period of self-discovery, one to be captured, learned from, and in some way used for the greater good of others. This is his story, set forth in chapters expressing his strongest values and life themes as he continues to evolve to a deeper understanding of his purpose and place in the world. He sees his story as perhaps an invitation to others to discover their own paths, to experience their own pilgrimages to a greater understanding of their place in the world, their value to others, their purpose and meaning of who they are and what they are called to do with all their revelations and self-discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DAY OF AWAKENING is a book of revelation and Self-discovery, challenging our misconceptions and inviting our self-inquiry. It deals with states of awakening to mystical consciousness and the true nature of man. It speaks of the path of initiation and includes examples of the highs and lows of every man's earnest endeavor to accommodate and adjust to himself as he goes through the inevitable changes encountered on the way to Self-realization. But before we can proceed on the path of enlightenment, there are aspects of the spiritual life that need to be understood, facets of every righteous man's journey, about which he may entertain false concepts and universal beliefs, such as: this world, healing, supply, mind, and body. In this book, a Mystic's Manual, all these are dealt with, as well as aspects of belief that assail man: what is Law, the effects of karma, understanding the nature of God, error, and prayer; meditation, forgiveness, and the truth of Individual Being. It contains the wisdom of the ages in simple, contemporary parable, poetry, and illustration, interwoven with Scripture. Like a germinating seed breaching the confines and limitations of its shell, it is the Call of Awakening, leaving us ultimately with no choice but to respond to the irresistible unfoldment of Soul, whose revelations of the moment lead man to an understanding of the truth of his being and his oneness with God. Life then becomes an awareness of the Living Word and not just words, such that thereafter everything speaks.

The book is written in order to "inform" our minds of the facts about who we are. Are we apes? Are we just a mixture of chemicals? Do we have souls or spirits beside our physical bodies? How to we know all these things? After this, the book then guides us to "accept" the real us in whatever view we hold. And finally, it helps us "practice" these facts in everyday life. The author shared what changed his own "world-view" and actions at the end of the book. This guide is for both the author himself, as well as for you. Read it, take whatever you are able to digest, and use it before you expire! As usual, it is not all the advice in this book that will be of great influence to everyone on earth. Yet, you will be guided to know who you are. You will get help in loving yourself, just as you are.

Book excerpt: Depression, self-loathing, unemployment, and destroyed relationships: the effects of drug and alcohol addiction run so much deeper than the morning-after hangover. However, awareness alone will not save the struggling addict, as J.P. Willson reveals in his fearless examination of substance dependency; recovery means doing the mental and emotional work to look inside oneself and discover a way to live as a sober, fulfilled individual in an often challenging world. Through the Mind’s Eye: A Journey of Self-Discovery is a thought-provoking and honest examination of the emotional, psychological, and physical ways someone must enact their own healing. As a recovering alcoholic, Willson courageously shares his own story of addiction, as well the ups and downs he experienced along the road to recovery. Packed with astonishing insights about our culture’s relationship to alcohol, as well as the lies we tell ourselves in order to keep using, this book will change the way you view addiction. Willson has no qualms about telling the reader how difficult recovery is—and how there is no quick cure-all—but his compassionate, candid reflections help foster the knowledge and will to change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation can be read in various ways. Where interpretation opts not to venture beyond Revelation or approach the book as a forecast of end-time events, it typically favours either going behind the text, in search of a socio-historical context of origin to which it might refer, or else standing in front of the text and investigating the book’s reception history, or its present relevance and impact. Comparatively little interpretative work has been undertaken inside the text, exploring the mechanics of how Revelation ‘works’, still less how its complex parts might fit together into a meaningful whole. Gordon Campbell considers Revelation to be a coherent narrative composition that draws its hearer or reader into its text-world. In Reading Revelation: A Thematic Approach, Campbell gives an innovative account of Revelation’s sophisticated thematic content. Mindful of Revelation's narrative verve, or its architecture en mouvement (as Jacques Ellul once put it), Campbell plots a series of thematic trajectories through the book. On this reading, parody and parallelism fundamentally shape the whole narrative. As a first-ever integrated account of Revelation’s macro-themes, Reading Revelation makes an important contribution to Revelation scholarship. In its light, the book may justifiably be seen as the ‘crowning achievement’ of the Scriptures.

Book excerpt: Julian of Norwich the best-known of the medieval mystics today. The text of her Revelation has circulated continually since the fifteenth century, but the twentieth century saw a massive expansion of her popularity. Theological or literary-historical studies of Julian may remark in passing on her popularity, but none have attempted a detailed study of her reception. This collection fills that gap: it outlines the full reception history from the extant manuscripts to the present day, looking at Julian in devotional cultures, in modernist poetry and present-day popular literature, and in her iconography in Norwich, both as a pilgrimage site and a tourist attraction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of the Second World War many archaeological finds have been made and much has been learned, particularly from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi texts. Many early documents have come to light, which were buried to avoid the destruction of all kinds of early religious beliefs and practices ordered by the 'orthodox' Church. As a result a host of scholars, archaeologists, theologians and fiction writers have since written hundreds of books on the subject matter, which had been hidden for nearly 1800 years. Over the past six years the author has read over two hundred books, pamphlets and pages from numerous websites. He read them all with interest, but more importantly with an open mind, whatever the persuasion of the writer and whatever angle or message they have been trying to convey. This book has been put together by amalgamating many of the thoughts, ideas and claims written in these books, interspersed with the author's own thoughts and ideas. The aim is to provide for the author an explanation of what may have happened historically, and how that has affected his own thinking. It is for his own satisfaction to try to gauge the course of the history of creation and religion through to the establishment of the early Christian Church, and of course in so doing studying other religions as well.
