Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journal of American Ethnology and Archaeology, 1894, Vol. 4 The author must reiterate his obligations to his friend Mr. T. V. Keam. Without his aid much which is here recorded could not have been observed, and the debt which American ethnologists owe to his enlightened interest in this people, with whom he has lived for many years in close commercial relations, is very great. During these studies the author was accompanied by his lamented assistant, the late J. G. Owens, references to whose help are found on many of the following pages. To this fearless investigator, who lost his life in the cause of American archaeology at the ruins of Copan, the author owes much more than this brief reference would indicate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smithsonian Institution, Bureau of American Ethnology, Bulletin, 1957, Vol. 164: Anthropological Papers; Numbers 49-56 The Ormond Beach project was originally planned as the first of a series of excavations in a 6-month project to be conducted in Volusia County under Smithsonian Institution sponsorship, with funds from the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (fera) of Florida, which took over the Federal relief program when the Civil Works Administration (cwa) was discontinued in April 1934. As it turned out, funds proved to be available only for the investigation of the Ormond Beach mound; this was excavated with a limited labor force between April 13 and May 21, 1934. Dr. M. W. Stirling, then di rector oi the Smithsonian Institution area research program in Flor ida, and chief of the Bureau of American Ethnology, selected the site for investigation. Jesse D. Jennings was the archeologist in charge of the excavations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
