Book excerpt: I am excited and in fact feel provoked, as the book has manifested, that the author had successfully gone through the mysterious "cultural immersion". Upon leading a full life in Uzbekistan and accomplished the mastery of both the Russian and Uzbek languages he was well disposed to manoeuvre the heritage tunnel spinning his head with the multitude of values unbeknown to him. His exploits through the rustic country, rugged mountains and infinite horizon of forest would match with deeper emotion in circumventing the cultural network, passing through the cal de sac of unexplained attributes and reaching the thoughts of real life assurance that have wired him to be "one of us". The subtle and essential values inculcated drove his adrenalin towards the congregation of behaviour, thereby providing an immense source of motivation to be part of the living culture of the country. This is thus a classic case in the study of any melting pot from any continent, whereby mere coexistence would miss out the rich and deep cultural experience.- Dr Yahya Mat Hassan, an academia and a pollster.
Book Synopsis Central Asia and Southeast Asia by : Paradorn Rangsimaporn
Download or read book Central Asia and Southeast Asia written by Paradorn Rangsimaporn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Central Asia’s relationship with Southeast Asia and ASEAN. It examines the “Southeast Asian vector” in the Central Asian countries’ mostly multi-vector foreign policies and the key dynamics that are transforming interregional relations into one of greater engagement. It argues that Central Asian states are interested in developing stronger ties with Southeast Asian countries, amongst others, as part of their hedging strategy in order to diversify their foreign economic relations and to lessen their overdependence on neighbouring great powers. It also looks at Central Asian views of ASEAN as a successful model of regionalism and as a hedging platform for Central Asian states to collectively manage relations with external powers.
Book Synopsis Legends of the Caucasus by : David Hunt
Download or read book Legends of the Caucasus written by David Hunt and published by Saqi. This book was released on 2012-05-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caucasus has an extremely rich folk literature, almost unknown among English speakers, which includes myths, legends, magical tales, anecdotes and proverbs. The one hundred and one legends included in this book reflect the cultures of fourteen different ethnic groups - their dynamism and the matters that concerned them: survival against external dangers, the risk of starvation and the persistence of the family or clan as a coordinated group. Descended from an oral tradition, much of their knowledge was retained in memories and passed down the generations. Yet, with the introduction of the alphabet, the way of life they portray is rapidly becoming extinct. An incomparable collection, Legends of the Caucasus conveys the poetry and romance of these swiftly vanishing tribes. 'This book has brought into light some of the hidden treasures of the Caucasus ... A major contribution not only to the study of the Caucasus, but also to world folklore.' John Colarusso, McMaster University, Canada 'Inventive and meticulous in rendering the extraordinary folk poetry of the many nations of the Caucasus ... [This is] essential reading for anyone seeking an insight into the cultures of the Caucasus.' Donald Rayfield, Queen Mary University of London, UK

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zana, Wild Woman of the Caucasus is loosely based on history. The novel documents the discovery of an ape-like woman found in the Caucasus region in the late 19th century. The story takes place in Circassia (present day Georgia, Europe), where two teenage boys discover and capture a deformed woman in the forest near their home. They sell her into slavery, which they later bitterly regret. One of the boys tries unsuccessfully to locate Zana with the intention of freeing her. Their guilt over the woman's forced slavery remains unresolved, yet on their repeated searches both boys find romance as they grow up and learn life lessons. But their lives remain as unfulfilled as their search for the wild woman.

Download or read book The Amazons written by Adrienne Mayor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real history of the Amazons in war and love Amazons—fierce warrior women dwelling on the fringes of the known world—were the mythic archenemies of the ancient Greeks. Heracles and Achilles displayed their valor in duels with Amazon queens, and the Athenians reveled in their victory over a powerful Amazon army. In historical times, Cyrus of Persia, Alexander the Great, and the Roman general Pompey tangled with Amazons. But just who were these bold barbarian archers on horseback who gloried in fighting, hunting, and sexual freedom? Were Amazons real? In this deeply researched, wide-ranging, and lavishly illustrated book, National Book Award finalist Adrienne Mayor presents the Amazons as they have never been seen before. This is the first comprehensive account of warrior women in myth and history across the ancient world, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Great Wall of China. Mayor tells how amazing new archaeological discoveries of battle-scarred female skeletons buried with their weapons prove that women warriors were not merely figments of the Greek imagination. Combining classical myth and art, nomad traditions, and scientific archaeology, she reveals intimate, surprising details and original insights about the lives and legends of the women known as Amazons. Provocatively arguing that a timeless search for a balance between the sexes explains the allure of the Amazons, Mayor reminds us that there were as many Amazon love stories as there were war stories. The Greeks were not the only people enchanted by Amazons—Mayor shows that warlike women of nomadic cultures inspired exciting tales in ancient Egypt, Persia, India, Central Asia, and China. Driven by a detective's curiosity, Mayor unearths long-buried evidence and sifts fact from fiction to show how flesh-and-blood women of the Eurasian steppes were mythologized as Amazons, the equals of men. The result is likely to become a classic.
