Book excerpt: Everybody has a book in them, or so the saying goes. For Kate Painter - wife, mother, freelance editor and aspiring writer - it's just a matter of finding a spare five minutes, a little peace and quiet... and something to write about. When her cousin Angie announces she has a room to let, Kate's spur of the moment decision to move temporarily out of the family home and in with Angie takes everyone, not least her husband and teenage children, by complete surprise. Yet Kate's sure that in this room of her own, she'll finally be able to write the novel she's always wanted to. But it doesn't happen so easily. Writer's block, dirty laundry and emergency babysitting duties all conspire against her. Amid the endless distractions, Kate is drawn into exploring the story of her family: her less than normal childhood with Angie on the family farm, her father's recent death, and the mystery behind Angie's enigmatic, absent mother. As the months pass, Kate writes her novel. And while it will never be the bestseller she had envisioned, it's the story Kate weaves for herself and her family that is the ultimate triumph.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2021 Alfred Fagon Award It's a play, a performance, a ritual, about human farming, farming humans, soil and the soul, seeds and cells... nursing the nursery, curing creation, remedies and vaccinations against white supremacist racism; birthing revolution, raising redemption, finding yourself in the forest of futurity, the promise of immortality and the matter of Black lives. Henrietta Lacks is one of most remarkable people in medical history. Her cells were taken without her or her family's knowledge or permission. Meet Anarcha, Betsey, Lucy and three NHS nurses in the pandemic, each denied their place in history. Now is the time for their incredible legacy to undergo a transformation. To blossom and grow into something beautiful and new. Mojisola Adebayo's Alfred Fagon Award-winning play Family Tree is a beautifully poetic drama about race, health, the environment, and the incredible legacy of one of the most influential women of modern times. Book excerpt: Johnnie hadn't minded playing toy theatre with them but wasn't going to play with girls outside, so he went and sat beside Grandad who said it was about time they had a man-to-man talk. That's when he said the thing about him and Tommy being his most important grandchildren because they would be the ones to carry the Kentson name on to the next generation of lightermen. Something told Johnnie that it was not the right time to say that he wanted to be a soldier in the cavalry when he grew up... Early death. Bereavement. Single parenthood. Children. Life. The parallels between her twenty-first century bereaved Canadian family and its mid-Victorian London counterpart become empathetically evident when Holly traces her family history through census records, and finds her imagination captured by glimpses into her ancestors' lives in the crowded Thames-side streets and alleys.

Rachel Jensen is perfectly happy: in love with her husband, devoted to their daughter Kate, gratified by her work restoring art. And finally, she’s pregnant again. But as Rachel discovers, perfection can unravel in an instant. The summer she is thirteen, Kate returns from camp sullen, angry, and withdrawn. Everyone assures Rachel it’s typical adolescent angst. But then Kate has a terrifying accident with her infant brother, and the ensuing guilt brings forth a dreadful lie—one that ruptures their family, perhaps irrevocably.

Book excerpt: Hearing friends talk about their ancestors and genealogical research prompted the author to wonder about her ancestors and started her on a journey that may never end. With the help of distant cousins contacted on the Internet, it was soon apparent that James Gardner of Butler County, Pennsylvania, was her great-great-great-grandfather. But there the trail grew cold. Where was he born and who were his parents? Was he part of the William and Sarah Gardner family that moved from Maryland to the wild frontier of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, either before or during the Revolutionary War? Most of the descendants of James and Martha "Molly" McAnallen Gardner married, had children and brought many other surnames to the Gardner family tree. Among those surnames are Ackerman, Brinkley, Cameron, Cann, Carson, Dover, Duffy, Fehrenbach, Grossman, Harriger, Hoge, Johnson, Mansfield, Marmie, McAnallen, Mershimer, Ott, Rohrer, Shoaf, Teal, Welsh and Wimer. With the help of more research and information from yet unknown cousins, this family tree will continue to grow and spread its branches. Perhaps we will even learn about the ancestors of James Gardner.

Book excerpt: The family history mysteries by Elaine L. Orr take you to Western Maryland' Mountains. Explore life today with Digger, a local graphics artist who has a knack for discovering things others might want to stay hidden. Starting with Book 2, she gets perspective from her late Uncle Benjamin, who reappeared on her kitchen table soon after the last shovel of dirt fell onto his grave. His advice can be helpful, annoying, or witty - it depends on whether you want to hear it. Get introduced to the series with Least Trodden Ground, The Unscheduled Murder Trip, and Mountain Rails of Old. Reviews of the Series Least Trodden Ground Least Trodden Ground hits all the notes! It has every element I want in a cozy mystery and presents them so well that I ordered book 2 when I was only half way through reading this one. Intelligent, likeable characters with a good sense of humor and good hearts paired well with a strong plot that kept me reading from beginning to end non-stop! The Unscheduled Murder Trip Elaine Orr's new series has a couple of neat twists in it. No cupcake bakers or dog groomers here; instead, Digger's hobby interest is family genealogy. Of course, then there's bound to be skeletons in the closets. Add in a ghost and you've got the makings of a fun new cozy series. "Unscheduled Murder Trip" mixes an old mystery with some feisty present day descendants and a few contemporaries. A fun read! Mountain Rails of Old I recommend the Family History Series, which is Elaine's most ambitious: She's channeling a spirit in addition to her always interesting living characters. I love how she brings the town and all the characters to life (even the ghost!) It's fun to learn about this corner of Maryland, fun to play genealogy detective, and fun to figure out "whodunit"!
