Book excerpt: Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) is a novel approach where vehicles communicate with each other even under challenging situations characterized by recurrent disconnections and long delays. They work on the principle of ad hoc networks. In the case of disconnections in the network, the messages do not reach their destination on time. Such disconnections result in data loss or delay. In order to avoid such data delay, we have proposed a hybrid prediction based data dissemination scheme which is based on V2V communication paradigm. The vehicles periodically predict their future position and on the basis of the relative distance between the intermediate vehicles and destination, the next hop neighbor selection is performed. The vehicles relay messages hop-by-hop between the intermediate vehicles to finally reach their destination, thereby, reducing delay and enhancing network efficiency. The proposed scheme has been analyzed through extensive simulation and the results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme with respect to existing scheme.

The importance of developing vehicular networking data dissemination protocols is exemplified by the recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology. With emphasis on safety, other useful applications of V2V communication include but are not limited to traffic and routing, weather, construction and road hazard alerts, as well as advertisement and entertainment. The core of V2V communication relies on the efficient dispersion of relevant data through wireless broadcast protocols for these varied applications. The challenges of vehicular networks demand an adaptive broadcast protocol capable of handling diverse applications. This research work illustrates the design of a wireless broadcast protocol that is context-aware and adaptive to vehicular environments taking into consideration vehicle density, road topology, and type of data to be disseminated. The context-aware hybrid data dissemination scheme combines store-and-forward and multi-hop broadcasts, capitalizing on the strengths of both these categories and mitigates the weaknesses to deliver data with maximum efficiency to a widest possible reach. This protocol is designed to work in both urban and highway mobility models. The behavior and performance of the hybrid data dissemination scheme is studied by varying the broadcast zone radius, aggregation ratio, data message size and frequency of the broadcast messages. Optimal parameters are determined and the protocol is then formulated to become adaptive to node density by keeping the field size constant and increasing the number of nodes. Adding message priority levels to propagate safety messages faster and farther than non-safety related messages is the next context we add to our adaptive protocol. We dynamically set the broadcast region to use multi-hop which has lower latency to propagate safety-related messages. Extensive simulation results have been obtained using realistic vehicular network scenarios. Results show that Context-Aware Hybrid Data Dissemination Protocol benefits from the low latency characteristics of multi-hop broadcast and low bandwidth consumption of store-and-forward. The protocol is adaptive to both urban and highway mobility models.

Book excerpt: Numerous local incidents occur on road networks daily many of which may lead to congestion and safety hazards. If vehicles can be provided with information about such incidents or traffic conditions in advance, the quality of driving in terms of time, distance, and safety can be improved significantly. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) have recently emerged as an effective tool for improving road safety through the propagation of warning messages among the vehicles in the network about potential obstacles on the road ahead. This research has presented an effective warning data dissemination scheme which deploys relay strategy and concept of Region of Interest (RoI). A warning data message is characterized as spatio-temporal, implying that both the location and the time of an incident must be considered. Factors such as the type of warning message, the layout of the road network, the traffic density and the capacity of alternative roads are influential in determining the RoI in which the warning message needs to be propagated. In the developed scheme, the type of warning message is taken into account for the determination of the RoI so that the more severe the incident, the wider the RoI. In the selection of the relay point, the border relay area in which the relay point is placed, is adapted to the traffic density so that the higher the traffic density, the narrower the relay area. Traffic statistics are used to calculate the RoI, which is then enclosed in the warning message so that the message is not retransmitted beyond the RoI. Also, the responsibility for retransmitting the message is assigned to the relay node. The data is then disseminated effectively so that vehicles in areas unrelated to the incident are not informed. The primary objective of this research is to provide better understanding of the dissemination of warning data in the context of a vehicular network with the ultimate goal of increasing the possibility of using VANETs for safety applications.

This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid penetration of technology in varied application domains, the existing cities are getting connected more seamlessly. Cities becomes smart by inducing ICT in the classical city infrastructure for its management. According to McKenzie Report, about 68% of the world population will migrate towards urban settlements in near future. This migration is largely because of the improved Quality of Life (QoL) and livelihood in urban settlements. In the light of urbanization, climate change, democratic flaws, and rising urban welfare expenditures, smart cities have emerged as an important approach for society’s future development. Smart cities have achieved enhanced QoL by giving smart information to people regarding healthcare, transportation, smart parking, smart traffic structure, smart home, smart agronomy, community security etc. Typically, in smart cities data is sensed by the sensor devices and provided to end users for further use. The sensitive data is transferred with the help of internet creating higher chances for the adversaries to breach the data. Considering the privacy and security as the area of prime focus, this book covers the most prominent security vulnerabilities associated with varied application areas like healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, education and agriculture etc. Furthermore, the massive amount of data being generated through ubiquitous sensors placed across the smart cities needs to be handled in an effective, efficient, secured and privacy preserved manner. Since a typical smart city ecosystem is data driven, it is imperative to manage this data in an optimal manner. Enabling technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Blockchain Technology, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Computer vision, Big Data Analytics, Next Generation Networks and Software Defined Networks (SDN) provide exemplary benefits if they are integrated in the classical city ecosystem in an effective manner. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expanding across many domains in the smart city, such as infrastructure, transportation, environmental protection, power and energy, privacy and security, governance, data management, healthcare, and more. AI has the potential to improve human health, prosperity, and happiness by reducing our reliance on manual labor and accelerating our progress in the sciences and technologies. NLP is an extensive domain of AI and is used in collaboration with machine learning and deep learning algorithms for clinical informatics and data processing. In modern smart cities, blockchain provides a complete framework that controls the city operations and ensures that they are managed as effectively as possible. Besides having an impact on our daily lives, it also facilitates many areas of city management.
