Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Kingdom Divided Cannot Stand explains the importance of Christians breaking through traditions and uniting as the body of Christ. It does not matter which church a Christian chooses to attend, because ultimately they are all members of the body of Christ (Christ's church). Manmade traditions can and will hinder the promises of God in a person’s life. As the end of the age quickly approaches, it is becoming more important for Christ’s church to unite. Find out how current events line up with biblical prophecy and how close we are to the end of the age. A Kingdom Divided Cannot Stand will answer common questions such as: What will happen next? Why did Christ allude to the days of Lot and Noah when describing the end of the age? Is the Old Law still in effect today? Are Christians accountable to the Old Law or the New Law? What did Christ do when He fulfilled the Old Law? A Kingdom Divided Cannot Stand also includes a “medically updated” version of the body of Christ.

Douglas and Abraham Lincoln resulted in a win by Douglas in his campaign for U.S. Senate. In contrast to Douglas's Popular Sovereignty stance, Lincoln stated that the country could not survive as half-slave and half-free states. The Lincoln-Douglas debates drew the attention of the entire nation and set the stage for Lincoln's successful 1860 race for the United States Presidency.

Book excerpt: Lincoln's life and leadership through the lens of the Bible How did Abraham Lincoln's lifelong study of scripture influence him as a man and, ultimately, as president? Historian Gordon Leidner believes the impact was profound--more than previously recognized--and has investigated all the known writings of Abraham Lincoln to identify, catalog, and study every instance in which Lincoln quoted from or alluded to the Bible. Rather than dwelling on the never-ending debate about Lincoln's religious beliefs, Leidner shows how scripture affected Lincoln personally, professionally, and politically. Leidner offers first a short biography that focuses on Lincoln's use of the Bible, how it shaped him as a person, how its influence changed over time, and how biblical quotations peppered his letters, speeches, and conversations. The book concludes with an unparalleled appendix that tabulates nearly 200 instances of Lincoln's quoting from or alluding to scripture, giving locators for the Bible and Roy P. Basler's nine volume Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln and quotations from both sources. The appendix also includes when and where Lincoln used each quote, providing valuable context, whether the use was in personal letters such as one to Queen Victoria after the death of Prince Albert, political speeches such as the Gettysburg Address, or state addresses such as the Second Inaugural Address. By showcasing Lincoln's specific biblical references and influences, Leidner reframes the question of Lincoln's religious beliefs so that readers may evaluate for themselves what solace and guidance the Bible afforded the sixteenth president.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

Book excerpt: The Civil War and the years of Reconstruction had finally ended. The small town of Tuskegee, Alabama, had quietly adjusted to the changes. I Am That I Am takes us to this demure town. Just when the scalawags and carpetbaggers ceased their tumultuous attempts to reorganize the South, a more sinister enemy appeared. The endless stretches of cotton flourishing during the hot days of summer abruptly ended. The ominous boll weevil with its insatiable appetite threatened the economy of the South. The white cotton was now brown and dying on the vines. Sarah, once a part of the antebellum gentry, proved to be a staunch ray of hope for both her family and her neighbors. One neighbor in particular was the equally resolute paradigm of Southern love and hospitality. This neighbor was Zachariah, a kind and humble soul who was raising his two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Mary. When Dr. George Washington Carver came to the recently opened school for Negroes (as the African Americans were called in those day), he found the help given by people such as Sarah and Zachariah, a refreshing reminder of God’s providential hand. Even more surprising was the tenacious love of the people that transcended any color barriers that many would assume existed. Dr. Carver, a botanist, soon found the rare yet simple solution to the boll weevil epidemic—the tiny insect called the beetle. If only Sarah could find a solution to the dark and mysterious cloud that seemed to aggrieve her daughter-in-law. If only Zachariah could solve the mystery of the disappearing food from the barn.
