Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophecies of Isaiah, Vol. 2 of 2: A New Translation With Commentary and Appendices The present volume supplies in a manner the key to its predecessor, and the author would fain bespeak for the series of essays which it contains a specially patient and candid perusal. They relate to subjects as well theological as critical it is impossible to keep exegesis and criticism entirely apart from theology. There are points in the study of Old Testament history and literature at which the theological or anti-theological bias of the critic materially affects his results. The fault of English students generally has been that they allow too much play to this bias, and of orthodox students in particular that they unduly restrict the field of philological inquiry. It is a fault, no doubt, which can be explained and excused from the history of English theology, but it is one which urgently needs rectifying, and the present work is a conscientious endeavour to promote this object. It is with some reluctance that the author has ex pressed himself so fully in one of the following essays on his own theological bias (a bias which has been rigorously confined within the narrowest possible area. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Commentary on the Prophecies of Isaiah, Vol. 1 This fourth edition of my Commentary on Isaiah contains the fruit of continued labour since the appearance of the third in 1840, and, after the latter was out of print, a thorough revisal of the whole has been made in preparation for a fourth appearance. To the commentary in the form it has hitherto presented, the objection has been made that it contained too much etymological matter and too many curious details far removed from the proper object of an exegetical work. The com plaint was not without foundation, and I have taken care that it cannot be raised against the commentary in its present. Form, especially since, apart from this consideration, I had thought to make the greatest possible curtailment, and my taste is opposed to unnecessary repetitions. In former editions of my commentaries, however, I always leave so much that is peculiar to each, that they do not quite become antiquated by later ones. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophecies of Isaiah, Vol. 1 of 2: A New Translation With Commentary and Appendices It is now ten years since the author first approached the Bible-reading public. They have been years to him fruitful of results both in study and in inner experience, and he would fain hope that not only has his knowledge increased, but his mental and spiritual vision been purified and enlarged. The work which he now ofifers is independent of his earlier work, to which the student may still be referred as partly supplementing the present, and especially as containing a moderate statement (differing in some respects from that ordinarily presented) of the anti-traditional point of view. It is only fair to add that since writing that work the authors views have been modified on some of the critical questions at issue (see page232). The difficulty and complication of these questions is much greater than he supposed, and he now believes that they can best be treated in a book specially devoted to the critical aspects of the Old Testament writings. The present work is estclusively exegetical; it appears to the author that a more thorough exegesis must precede the fruitful investigation of critical problems. It is the interest of all parties to ascertain The Book of Isaiah Chronologically Arranged. An amended version with historical and critical introductions and explanatory notes. The prophet is charged to speak comfortably, that is to the heart of Jerusalem, because her warfare, that is the long-continued period of her trouble, is se complished, her iniquity is pardoned, and the measure of her chastisement is ended, see ing that she has received double for all her sins. In all the earlier messages the dominant thought was that the purpose of judgment is peace. The burden of this last division is that when judgment is accomplished, peace will be the result. It does not seek to dupli cate other commentaries to which the student must turn. Its chief characteristics are (a) its rigid exclusion of all processes, both critical and exegetical, from its notes; (5) its presupposition and its use of the assured results of historical investigation and criticism wherever such results throw light on the biblical text; (5) its running analysis both in text and comment; (a') its brief explana tory notes adapted to the rapid reader; (e) its thorough but brief Introductions; (f) its use Of the Revised Version Of 1881, supplemented with all important renderings in other versions.
