Book excerpt: An engaging and accessible introductory history of the people, places, culture, and politics that shaped Maryland. In 1634, two ships carrying a small group of settlers sailed into the Chesapeake Bay looking for a suitable place to dwell in the new colony of Maryland. The landscape confronting the pioneers bore no resemblance to their native country. They found no houses, no stores or markets, churches, schools, or courts, only the challenge of providing food and shelter. As the population increased, colonists in search of greater opportunity moved on, slowly spreading and expanding the settlement across what is now the great state of Maryland. In Maryland, historians recount the stories of struggle and success of these early Marylanders and those who followed to reveal how people built modern Maryland. Originally published in 1986, this new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. Spanning the years from the 1600s to the beginning of Governor Larry Hogan’s term of office in January 2015, the book more fully fleshes out Native American, African American, and immigrant history. It also includes completely new content on politics, arts and culture, business and industry, education, the natural environment, and the role of women as well as notable leaders in all these fields. Maryland is heavily illustrated, with nearly two hundred photographs and illustrations (more than half of them in full color), as well as related maps, charts, and graphs, many of which are new to this book. An extensive index and a comprehensive Further Reading section provide extremely useful tools for readers looking to engage more deeply with Maryland history. Touching on major figures from George Calvert to Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman to William Donald Schaefer, this book takes readers on an unforgettable journey through the history of the Free State. It should be in every library and classroom in Maryland.

Charles Calvert's success in creating an agricultural college, its struggles during the Civil War, its evolution into a tuition-free people's college, and its growth into a University. This is the story of flamboyant Curley Byrd and football teams that won national championships; the story of scholarly Wilson Elkins who built excellence in the classrooms; and the story of John Toll, Brit Kirwan, and Dan Mote who created an engine of the economy that reached far beyond the campus, and who elevated the University into it present day elite status.

Book excerpt: "The first Italian translation of the Book of Common Prayer was made in 1608 by William Bedell (the chaplain to James I's ambassador in Venice) with the help of Fulgenzio Micanzio and Paolo Sarpi. This translation was part of an English propaganda plan to instigate a schism in the Church of Venice, at a time of conflict between the court of Rome and the Venetian Republic. This chapter reconstructs the relationships between Sarpi and Micanzio and the English embassy in Venice. As far as we know, Bedell's translation remained a manuscript with no known copies extant"--

Book excerpt: In mid-sixteenth-century England, people were born into authority and responsibility based on their social status. Thus elite children could designate property or serve in Parliament, while children of the poorer sort might be forced to sign labor contracts or be hanged for arson or picking pockets. By the late eighteenth century, however, English and American law began to emphasize contractual relations based on informed consent rather than on birth status. In By Birth or Consent, Holly Brewer explores how the changing legal status of children illuminates the struggle over consent and status in England and America. As it emerged through religious, political, and legal debates, the concept of meaningful consent challenged the older order of birthright and became central to the development of democratic political theory. The struggle over meaningful consent had tremendous political and social consequences, affecting the whole order of society. It granted new powers to fathers and guardians at the same time that it challenged those of masters and kings. Brewer's analysis reshapes the debate about the origins of modern political ideology and makes connections between Reformation religious debates, Enlightenment philosophy, and democratic political theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948, a war broke out that would result in Israeli independence and the erasure of Arab Palestine. Over 20 months, thousands of Jews and Arabs came from all over the world to join those already on the ground to fight in the ranks of the Israel Defense Forces and the Arab Liberation Army. With this book, the young men and women who made up these armies come to life through their letters home, writing about everything from daily life to nationalism, colonialism, race, and the character of their enemies. Shay Hazkani offers a new history of the 1948 War through these letters, focusing on the people caught up in the conflict and its transnational reverberations. Dear Palestine also examines how the architects of the conflict worked to influence and indoctrinate key ideologies in these ordinary soldiers, by examining battle orders, pamphlets, army magazines, and radio broadcasts. Through two narratives--the official and unofficial, the propaganda and the personal letters--Dear Palestine reveals the fissures between sanctioned nationalism and individual identity. This book reminds us that everyday people's fear, bravery, arrogance, cruelty, lies, and exaggerations are as important in history as the preoccupations of the elites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this reissue of Tales from the Maryland Terrapins, fans can relive the most profound memories from more than 100 years of athletics at the University of Maryland in College Park. Authored by David Ungrady, a former two-sport athlete at the school, the book includes a series of first-person anecdotes that reflect the joys and challenges of his athletic career as well as the rich history of collegiate athletics at the school. While it was still the Maryland Agricultural College, the university staged its first intercollegiate athletic competition in 1888, playing baseball games against St. John’s College and the Naval Academy. The first organized competition for football was in 1892. The athletic program began to flourish early in the 1900s. Men’s basketball began shortly after the turn of the century, in 1904, and men’s lacrosse began in 1910. Women’s sports such as basketball, rifling, and soccer started as intramural sports in the 1920s. The women’s rifle team won several titles after it was first organized in 1922. By the 1940s, the men’s intercollegiate program boasted such national-caliber programs as baseball, boxing, football, lacrosse, track and field, and soccer. Women’s teams started competing in intercollegiate competition in 1960 and later blossomed during the last quarter of the 20th century. Now, over 100 years after the athletic program’s inception, Maryland has sent numerous players to professional sports organizations, including the NFL, NBA, and MLB. If you’re a fan of Maryland athletics, you’ll find Tales from the Maryland Terrapins to be the perfect addition to your bookshelf! Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
