These beds were situated, partly in our Southern province of Zeeland, partly towards the North in the inland sea which we call the Zuyderzee, at the spots indicated on the Map. The oysters were brought to market in Amsterdam and were partly exported to Germany at a price which bears no comparison at all with what is at present paid for them. This having been the state of things a good many years ago, it is a pity that we have to recognize the fact of one of these natural beds being nearly destroyed. There is no serious doubt but this destruction has come about by over fishing. The few oysters that are left are only worth the notice of the nieuwe-diep fishermen in the summer time when they are not employed in any other fisheries, and even out of their number only a few pay regular visits to those parts of the Zuyderzee where oysters may happen for the moment to be just a little more numerous than usual. In a study of the oysters of the United States, it is important to glance at this distant scene of their growth and industry, but more than a general view of the subject is not compatible with the purposes of the present report. The eastern coast of the province of New Brunswick is washed by the waters of the gulf of St. Lawrence. At cape Tormentine the coast trends eastward, along Nova Scotia, to the Gut of Canso, and then turns sharply north ward, ou the western side of Cape Breton island, which bars out the Atlantic. This part of the gulf is a great bight, with Anticosti island on the north, and Cape Breton on the east. Down in the bottom of the bight, so to speak, lies the long irregular Shape of Prince Edward island, between which and the mainland flow the shallow but troublesome currents of Northumberland strait. The physical and biological investigations, which were conducted from the U. S. Fish Commission steamer Fish Hawk, were begun in October, 1899, and, after an interruption extending from the end of March to the first of November, were completed in December, 1900. The experimental work covered a period of three years, beginning in April, 1900. The objects of the work of the Fish Hawk were: (1) To ascertain the present extent and condition of the natural oyster beds in certain sections, for the purpose of comparison with determinations by Wins low on the same ground in 1886 - 1888; (2) to study comparatively the biological conditions of a number of good natural oyster beds and typical planted areas, with the object of determining the natural cause, if such exists, for the failure of the planted beds; (3) to study the physical and biological characters of the bottom and water of various localities for comparison with the conditions prevailing on good oyster producing localities of the North, and (4) to collect statistics bearing upon the value and extent of the oyster fishery of the State in the past and at the present time.
