Book excerpt: The devastation of many of the greatest North Atlantic cod stocks, particularly those of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Grand Banks, has become an icon for the unsustainable relation between human exploitation and Nature. Here, George Rose tells the full story of that devastation, in scientific detail, for the first time - from the formation of the North Atlantic marine ecosystems to the massive stock declines in the last half of the 20th century. Politics and the fisheries are inextricably entwined. In Cod, Rose recounts the many political influences on the fisheries over several centuries and describes how neglect from the late 1800s onward led to insufficient scientific knowledge and little protection for the stocks when massive Euro-Russian fleets targeted the Grand Banks after World War II, destroying the most prolific fishery the world has known. Cod is no armchair account, but a controversial one that includes original information on the North Atlantic fisheries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely new flyfishing guide to New England is the best flyfishing guide ever on this fishery-rich and historic area. Author and flyfishing guide Lou Zambello provides all the information to improve your catch rate in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Masschusetts. Full-color maps accompany the fisheries, complete with GPS coordinates, access points, public land, access roads, boat ramps (including small hand launches), parking areas, named holes and pools and more. Many flyfishers flock to the same well-known waters that are written about again and again and face crowded conditions. Yet there are hundreds of productive waters that are ignored. Zambello, who has spent over 30 years fishing in New England, teamed with former Maine State Fisheries Director John Boland and other experts to cover many of these great uncrowded waters in the Flyfisher's Guide to New England. Lou spent the last several years criss-crossing New England researching this book, a review of many hundreds of both popular and unknown, moving and stillwaters in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Following Wilderness Adventures Press' tradition of creating the best flyfishing guide books, the new full-color Flyfisher's Guide to New England will help you get your own piece of fishing heaven. Also check out Zambello's first book, Flyfishing Northern New England's Seasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the New England Fisheries: With Maps There is no industry in America that antedates the fisheries. Fishermen from France, Spain, Portugal and England frequented the banks of Newfoundland before any trade relations between the Old and the New World came into existence. The codfishery of the New England coast was carried on many years previous to the establishment of a permanent English colony in our country. Voyages of exploration and settlement to New England were prompted by reports of the valuable fishing grounds lying between Cape Cod and Cape Sable. With the permanent settlement of New England the fisheries became the chief industry of the people, and continued down to the Revolution to be a main source of wealth, and to supply the principal article of trade between the merchants of New England and those of the West Indies and Europe. The fisheries of New England were of especial importance during the colonial period and still continue to be of greater economic importance than at any previous period of our history; yet the industry, with the exception of the whale fishery, has no literature that adequately sets forth its history and value. There are several good accounts of the whale fishery; but the story of the cod and mackerel and inshore fisheries does not appear to have been an attractive field to writers. The accounts we have of the history and of the methods of the fisheries have been prompted largely by government inquiry and exist as government reports. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its history, America has been defined through maps. Whether made for military strategy or urban reform, to encourage settlement or to investigate disease, maps invest information with meaning by translating it into visual form. They capture what people knew, what they thought they knew, what they hoped for, and what they feared. As such they offer unrivaled windows onto the past. In this book Susan Schulten uses maps to explore five centuries of American history, from the voyages of European discovery to the digital age. With stunning visual clarity, A History of America in 100 Maps showcases the power of cartography to illuminate and complicate our understanding of the past. Gathered primarily from the British Library’s incomparable archives and compiled into nine chronological chapters, these one hundred full-color maps range from the iconic to the unfamiliar. Each is discussed in terms of its specific features as well as its larger historical significance in a way that conveys a fresh perspective on the past. Some of these maps were made by established cartographers, while others were made by unknown individuals such as Cherokee tribal leaders, soldiers on the front, and the first generation of girls to be formally educated. Some were tools of statecraft and diplomacy, and others were instruments of social reform or even advertising and entertainment. But when considered together, they demonstrate the many ways that maps both reflect and influence historical change. Audacious in scope and charming in execution, this collection of one hundred full-color maps offers an imaginative and visually engaging tour of American history that will show readers a new way of navigating their own worlds.
