Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Convocation of the Church of England From the Earliest Period to the Year 1742 Since the previous edition of this work was published, the Convocation question has excited much more attention than was formerly bestowed upon it. The original Preface, with the exception of a few lines, therefore, is allowed to remain unaltered, inasmuch as it presents a true picture of the indifference which prevailed at that time. The various subjects connected with Convocation have been carefully re-considered by the author for the present edition. Large additions have also been made; some questions, which had not attracted much notice when the former edition was published, are fully discussed; and it is believed that the work embraces all important matters connected with the history, the proceedings, and the constitution of Convocation. My most sincere thanks are due to his Grace the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury for his kind and ready permission to examine the Mss. at Lambeth, of which considerable use has been made in this volume; also to the Vicar-general, Travers Twiss, Esq., D.C.L., for his kindness in giving me free access to the books of Convocation. To the Very Rev. the Dean of Christ Church my thanks are due for allowing me to inspect the Wake Mss. in his custody in Oxford, though I did not find it necessary to ask permission to make extracts; as considerable portions of the volumes, referring to the proceedings of Convocation, are transcripts from the books at Lambeth. Not so with Wallace Notestein's measured, intellectual take on the subject in A History of Witchcraft in England, which offers not only a thorough historical narrative, but also puts the practice into social and political context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as today’s embrace of the digital has sparked interest in the history of print culture, so in eighteenth-century Britain the dramatic proliferation of print gave rise to urgent efforts to historicize different media forms and to understand their unique powers. And so it was, Paula McDowell argues, that our modern concepts of oral culture and print culture began to crystallize, and authors and intellectuals drew on older theological notion of oral tradition to forge the modern secular notion of oral tradition that we know today. Drawing on an impressive array of sources including travel narratives, elocution manuals, theological writings, ballad collections, and legal records, McDowell re-creates a world in which everyone from fishwives to philosophers, clergymen to street hucksters, competed for space and audiences in taverns, marketplaces, and the street. She argues that the earliest positive efforts to theorize "oral tradition," and to depict popular oral culture as a culture (rather than a lack of culture), were prompted less by any protodemocratic impulse than by a profound discomfort with new cultures of reading, writing, and even speaking shaped by print. Challenging traditional models of oral versus literate societies and key assumptions about culture’s ties to the spoken and the written word, this landmark study reorients critical conversations across eighteenth-century studies, media and communications studies, the history of the book, and beyond.
