Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Churches in England and Scotland, Vol. 2: From the Reformation to This Present Time Pillars of churches, and nothing' could be deter: minecfmined but by the voice of the majority. It does not appear, that the principal promoters of the reformation in thofe parts, endeavoured (0 much to bring the form of church order to the conformity, which the New Tefiament points out, as to, ren der it agreeable to the mike of civil Governors, and the inclinations of the people. The rights of pri vate judgment, which were infified upon at the council of Spires, were foon betrayed by the fame perfons who gave in a proteftation in their favours; for the united fentiments of fo many divincs were foon fubfiituted in place' of the Pope's authority, and the power of general councils; and it was ac counted as criminal to depart from the formularies of'religion, which were then compofed, as it was to renounce the papal power, and the jurifdieiion of the Bilhop of Rome. The firfl defign ofithefe for mularies was, to exhibit to the world an account of what were the principles of the pretefiants and they meant no more by them, than a public vindication of themfelves, from the falfe accufations of the papifis: but after they began to increafe, and he came more refpeetable in the eyes of the world, they made theic confefiions terms of their fellow ihip, and refufed their communion to fuch as did nor agree with them in every particular. The fe veral hiilorians who have handed down to us an account of the rife and progrefs of the reformation, and the principles and prac'tice of our chief te formers, have acted, in many inftances, rather the part of apologifis than of writers of hiiiory.
