Book Synopsis Allegheny City by : Daniel M. Rooney
Download or read book Allegheny City written by Daniel M. Rooney and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allegheny City, known today as Pittsburgh's North Side, was the third-largest city in Pennsylvania when it was controversially annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1907. Founded in 1787 as a reserve land tract for Revolutionary War veterans in compensation for their service, it quickly evolved into a thriving urban center with its own character, industry, and accomplished residents. Among those to inhabit the area, which came to be known affectionately as "The Ward," were Andrew Carnegie, Mary Cassatt, Gertrude Stein, Stephen Foster, and Martha Graham. Once a station along the underground railroad, home to the first wire suspension bridge, and host to the first World Series, the North Side is now the site of Heinz Field, PNC Park, the Andy Warhol Museum, the National Aviary, and world headquarters for corporations such as Alcoa and the H. J. Heinz Company. Dan Rooney, longtime North Side resident, joins local historian Carol Peterson in creating this highly engaging history of the cultural, industrial, and architectural achievements of Allegheny City from its humble beginnings until the present day. The authors cover the history of the city from its origins as a simple colonial outpost and agricultural center to its rapid emergence alongside Pittsburgh as one of the most important industrial cities in the world and an engine of the American economy. They explore the life of its people in this journey as they experienced war and peace, economic boom and bust, great poverty and wealth—the challenges and opportunities that fused them into a strong and durable community, ready for whatever the future holds. Supplemented by historic and contemporary photos, the authors take the reader on a fascinating and often surprising street-level tour of this colorful, vibrant, and proud place.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Catholic Church: In the Dioceses of Pittsburg and Allegheny From Its Establishment to the Present Time It is my good fortune to be a descendant of one of the first Catholic families that penetrated the wilds to plant the faith in western Pennsylvania, and to have been early familiarized with accounts of the privations and sufferings to which both priests and people were subjected in those early days. From childhood these narrations possessed a charm which, while it made them interesting at the time, aided also in engraving them on the memory. Acquaintance with the history of the Church increased as time went on, and when I became associated with others in the publication of the Catholic Journal a few years ago, I ventured upon a few historical articles of a general character. Finding they proved interesting to many readers, they were continued. Different congregations and institutions in the diocese were then sketched in a series of articles, amounting in all to more than sixty, until the publication of the paper was suspended. Seeing that a large amount of historical data had been collected, and that the publication of the articles in the Journal had elicited further information and enabled me to correct erroneous statements; and having been at pains and expense in bringing the information together, I determined to recast whatever had been written, supply what was still wanting, and publish a history of the two dioceses. Information was then carefully sought from every available source, and such scraps of time as could be spared from the care of a large congregation and other duties were devoted to the work. But writing a consecutive history was found to be different from penning a newspaper article; and a work of this character especially is surrounded with more and greater difficulties than people are apt to imagine. Book Synopsis Rome and Irish Catholicism in the Atlantic World, 1622–1908 by : Matteo Binasco
Download or read book Rome and Irish Catholicism in the Atlantic World, 1622–1908 written by Matteo Binasco and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book builds upon research on the role of Catholicism in creating and strengthening a global Irish identity, complementing existing scholarship by adding a ‘Roman perspective’. It assesses the direct agency of the Holy See, its role in the Irish collective imagination, and the extent and limitations of Irish influence over the Holy See’s policies and decisions. Revealing the centrality of the Holy See in the development of a series of missionary connections across the Atlantic world and Rome, the chapters in this collection consider the formation, causes and consequences of these networks both in Ireland and abroad. The book offers a long durée perspective, covering both the early modern and modern periods, to show how Irish Catholicism expanded across continental Europe and over the Atlantic across three centuries. It also offers new insights into the history of Irish migration, exploring the position of the Irish Catholic clergy in Atlantic communities of Irish migrants.
