Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canning Gold is a meticulously researched examination of how sweet corn canning helped shape the economy, landscape and people of rural Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont during the "corn shop century," 1860-1960's. Paul Frederic powerfully demonstrates the strong community bond essential for the industry's initial success. Interviews with farmers, factory owners and cannery workers who raised and packed the corn, combined with the written record, and Frederic's insight derived from growing up in the shadow of a corn shop, enrich the work and trace various threads linking local patterns to regional, national and global forces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have been the mainstay of the grueling, seasonal canning industry for over a century. This book is their collective biography--a history of their family and work lives, and of their union. Out of the labor militancy of the 1930s emerged the United Cannery, Agricultural, Packing, and Allied Workers of America (UCAPAWA). Quickly it became the seventh largest CIO affiliate and a rare success story of women in unions. Thousands of Mexican and Mexican-American women working in canneries in southern California established effective, democratic trade union locals run by local members. These rank-and-file activists skillfully managed union affairs, including negotiating such benefits as maternity leave, company-provided day care, and paid vacations--in some cases better benefits than they enjoy today. But by 1951, UCAPAWA lay in ruins--a victim of red baiting in the McCarthy era and of brutal takeover tactics by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time Women’s Work and Chicano Families: Cannery Workers of the Santa Clara Valley was published, little research had been done on the relationship between the wage labor and household labor of Mexican American women. Drawing on revisionist social theories relating to Chicano family structure as well as on feminist theory, Patricia Zavella paints a compelling picture of the Chicano women who worked in northern California’s fruit and vegetable canneries. Her book combines social history, shop floor ethnography, and in-depth interviews to explore the links between Chicano family life and gender inequality in the labor market.

Book excerpt: "The Hawaiian pineapple industry emerged in the late nineteenth century as part of an attempt to diversify the Hawaiian economy from dependence on sugar cane as its only staple industry. Here, economic historian Richard A. Hawkins presents a definitive history of an industry from its modest beginnings to its emergence as a major contributor to the American industrial narrative. He traces the rise and fall of the corporate giants who dominated the global canning world for much of the twentieth century. Drawing from a host of familiar economic models and an unparalleled body of research, Hawkins analyses the entrepreneurial development and twentieth-century migration of the pineapple canning industry in Hawaii. The result is not only a comprehensive history, but also a unique story of American innovation and ingenuity amid the rising tides of globalization."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canned Foods: How to Buy, How to Sell; Statistical and Practical Information About the Canning Industry Several years ago I began to write and manifold a series of lectures for the information of about one hundred traveling and city salesmen employed by a large wholesale grocery house. For this house I was then a department manager and buyer. Some copies of these lectures were sent to personal friends. Soon requests for the series began to be received from them and their friends. I then printed on a multigraph several hundred sets of the series and distributed them to those wholesale grocers who sub scribed for them. Apparently this did not satisfy the demand, as, since then, I have had numerous requests for the series and suggestions that they be published in book form at a more pop ular price. These suggestions I concluded to adopt, hence this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
