Book excerpt: Sir John Fortescue holds a pre-eminent place amongst British military historians, his enduring fame and legacy resting mainly on his life’s work “The History of the British Army”, issued in 20 volumes, which took him some 30 years to complete. In scope and breadth it is such that no modern scholar has attempted to cover such a large and diverse subject in its entirety; but Sir John did so and with aplomb, leading to a readable and comprehensive study. This ninth volume covers the period from 1813-1814, after a bloody struggle the Duke of Wellington finally cleared the border fortress at Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz having laid siege to them more than once he set his victorious British and Portuguese troops on to the task of destroying the French armies before them in a piecemeal fashion. As can well be followed in Fortescue’s masterly volume the advance of the British forces leavers the French forces out of numerous river protected positions before converging and destroying on the armies of the Centre and the North at the battle of Vitoria. Despite great ineptitude in the east of Spain, Wellington drove the French before him and into the Pyrenees, leading to a number of vicious engagements around the mountains through which the British Troops emerged victorious. However in North America the fighting was becoming desperate including bloody reverse at Sackett’s Harbour, but ultimately the British and Canadian forces would fight to a honourable peace after the disastrous attack on New Orleans in 1815 [this battle is covered in the next volume]. TIMES.—"We have in these volumes the worthy continuation of a history which is worthy of its subject. Mr. Fortescue will not ask for higher praise."

Book excerpt: The British campaign in the Low Countries in 1813-14 in support of the Dutch revolt against the French is one of the lesser-known campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars, but one, which the great historian of the British Army Sir John Fortescue wrote that it was impossible to understand the Waterloo campaign without a knowledge of. The book deals with all aspects of the campaign, from grand strategy, with the proposed marriage alliance between the House of Orange and the House of Hanover, to tactical analysis of the battles and sieges that took place, including the disastrous attack on Bergen-op-Zoom, where heroic British soldiers paid with their lives for their commanders' failures. The problems of co-operation between the British and Prussians described here foreshadowed those, which would affect Wellington in 1815. Illustrated with contemporary portraits, plans of the fortifications of Bergen and eight maps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the British Army, Vol. 9: 1813 1814 Next, it was not easy, after following for three years the operations of our army in every sphere of action from the Western front to East Africa, to recall readily the details of the extremely intricate manoeuvres of 1813 - 1814 in the Pyrenees. I do not say that the time spent over the war with Germany was wholly unprofitable to me, for I could assure myself at least of two things, that all the old mistakes of former wars were repeated in high quarters between 1914 and 1918, and that the prowess of the British soldier was worthily maintained. But it was very trying to turn abruptly from the Ypres salient to the battle of Sorauren and from Anzac Cove to the passage of the Adour; and I am afraid that some mistakes may have been left unamended in consequence. Book Synopsis The British Army, 1783–1815 by : Kevin Linch
Download or read book The British Army, 1783–1815 written by Kevin Linch and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British army between 1783 and 1815 – the army that fought in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars – has received severe criticism and sometimes exaggerated praise from contemporaries and historians alike, and a balanced and perceptive reassessment of it as an institution and a fighting force is overdue. That is why this carefully considered new study by Kevin Linch is of such value. He brings together fresh perspectives on the army in one of its most tumultuous – and famous – eras, exploring the global range of its deployment, the varieties of soldiering it had to undertake, its close ties to the political and social situation of the time, and its complex relationship with British society and culture. In the face of huge demands on its manpower and direct military threats to the British Isles and territories across the globe, the army had to adapt. As Kevin Linch demonstrates, some changes were significant while others were, in the end, minor or temporary. In the process he challenges the ‘Road to Waterloo’ narrative of the army’s steady progress from the nadir of the 1780s and early 1790s, to its strong performances throughout the Peninsular War and its triumph at the Battle of Waterloo. His reassessment shows an army that was just good enough to cope with the demanding campaigns it undertook.
